Being Favor

According to the business world, today is black Friday, tomorrow is Small Business Saturday and then there’s cyber Monday.

I suppose millions of people will be out looking for the best deals of the year hoping to find favor on prices for that special someone.

For me, shopping isn’t something that has entertained most of my thoughts this week, mainly because of all the activity in our home. Several pet emergencies, ministry, Thanksgiving, writing and my husband’s birthday filled my agenda and the week isn’t over.

Throughout the chaos one thing stayed on my mind; God allowed us to be favor in another person’s life.  I didn’t realize that it would come in the form of chicken sitting.

Lord, watch over our car!
Our car has been on the top of our prayer list lately. Even though the fuel filter was replaced, we smelled gas each time we got out of the car.
My husband asked his friend, I’ll call him Chris, to bring his car ramps to the clinic last Friday so he could get under the vehicle to look at it on Saturday.  The fuel filter, however, had other plans.

My husband had to pick up some parts for a job that he was doing.  When he got out of the car, the gas fumes were overwhelming, but you still could not see any leaks.  As he was leaving the store, he started the engine to take a look underneath the car.  By now the leak had made itself visible and gasoline was pouring out of one of the filter line connections.

The mechanic that we use occasionally was only about two miles away, so my husband thought he would be able to make it there.  Within 300 yards of the shop the engine quit.  Coasting uphill is not a law of physics that scientists will tell you works, but the car coasted uphill over a set of railroad tracks, back down the other side (a few hundred more feet) and right up to the mechanic’s shop overhead doors.  God’s angels went on car duty that day.

No Business Today ...
The shop seemed extremely quiet for a Friday morning, so hubby walked to the front door and was met by a sign that read, “CLOSED.” Seems the boys had gone deer hunting.

Now what?  He called his friend with the ramps.  It’s a miracle in itself that he actually answered the phone.  God moved in another way. This gentleman was in the area when he normally wouldn’t have been and was only about four blocks away.  Chris came right over and they got to work in the mechanic's parking lot.

It had rained overnight so the dirt and stone parking lot was a saturated muddy mess, and it was just above freezing. You get the picture that this wasn’t going to be a fun thing to do.

The car is low to the ground so neither of the men could fit completely under the car. With gas fumes overpowering the location somehow they had to get under there to work on the problem.

The filter is located adjacent to the left rear wheel and up inside the chassis.  Chris tried reaching it from the front and got it hooked up a couple of times only to have it pop off when they started the car.  Both of them needed to work together to snap this so-called “quick connection” in place.  Lying on their backs in the midst of the mess Chris turned to my husband and bluntly said (using his exact words), “Friendship sucks”.

About 45 minutes later they were able to get the connection to lock in place.  Sore from the fuel line aerobics that they had done and covered in gasoline, clearly a “No Smoking” sign should have been placed around their necks.

Job complete … no tow truck needed, nor any additional costs, just a little extra “Cheer” detergent in the laundry.  For my husband he felt that God gave him favor in the fact that he had a safe place to work on the car (an empty parking lot) and that they were able to finish the job themselves.

Friend Zone?
When my husband shared the events of the day last Friday, only one thing stuck out in what he said … Chris referring to this “favor” as a thing of friendship while he was in the middle of an uncomfortable situation.

This was a big step forward for Chris.  You see, for the past year I have been praying for him to receive Christ.  Every time my husband has the opportunity to work with this person (in whom he already recognized as a friend), Chris would bring up questions regarding faith, Christianity and reasons why he didn’t believe.  Chris never openly acknowledged my husband as a friend, but on that day he regarded his act as one of friendship.  Wow, that was something huge.

Chicken Boo
A door opened last week for God to allow someone to show us favor, and now the Lord was about to permit us to "be favor" for someone else.

Without knowing about my writing on favor, Chris asked my husband if he would do him a “favor” this week while he and his wife were out of town for Thanksgiving.  This would be another step for him along the lines of trust.  He asked my husband if he would care for his pets.  This isn’t an easy task, because Chris lives out of town on a gravel road.  Getting there is an act of faith, especially in the dark.

My husband explained to me that we had to go feed chickens and a feral cat twice a day, let them out and put them back in their pen at night.   Chris told my hubby that we had to make sure they were safe from the coyotes and bobcats. You can imagine what I thought we would be doing in rounding up chickens and fencing off wild animals.

Embracing Favor
Each day it was hard fitting everything into our schedule and we grew rather tired quickly.  I have a new appreciation for chicken growers.
Right now our day is filled with other things besides work.  Two rescue cats have been diagnosed with kidney failure and have to be given medication along with hydration fluids (Lactated Ringers) several times a day.
My husband calls it “juicing them up.” The easiest way I can explain it is to think of how you baste a turkey or chicken by adding fluid under the skin.  This IV type procedure has to be done 6 times a day between two cats along with medications and caring for other animals with special needs.

With all this going on we didn’t have time to have thanksgiving, but took time to be thankful.  You might have thought that we were tense and on edge trying to keep up with what we had to do, but we have had a peaceful week.  Lord willing, we will have our Thanksgiving on Sunday.

Recognizing Favor
This week I read a lot of comments on social media sites where people posted what they were thankful for this year.  I can testify that most of them were about family and their work, but few spoke of their friendships.
It may be an oversight, but I wonder if people really recognize that having a friend is another way God gives His children favor.

When Chris made that statement about friendship, it caused me to remember a passage in the Bible where Jesus no longer called his disciples servants, but from that point on He referred to them as friends.

Jesus said, “From now on I call you not servants; for servants don’t know what his lord does; but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you.” (John 15:15  emphasis mine)

Something took place, an exchange of trust if you will, when Chris accepted my husband as his friend.
He recognized there was a burden, some inconvenience on his part, yet because of friendship he was willing to take on the task for his “friend.”
He didn’t think of it as an imposition, and gladly got down on the ground in the mess to save someone.

In praying over this writing one song continually played in my mind, “What a friend we have in Jesus.” Chris’ actions reminded me of just how powerful the favor of a friend can be.

There are times in our life that God will call us to “be the favor” to someone in the form of our giving of ourselves in some degree.  That’s exactly what He did with Jesus when Christ laid down His life on the cross.  Jesus demonstrated how great His love was for us when He willingly obeyed the Heavenly Father.

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13  KJV)

My husband was blessed in that he found favor from his friend and God concerning the car.  His friend came when he called and God caused Chris to be in the area at that particular time.   When called, Chris came.  This took the friendship to a new level.

I never thought I’d thank God for allowing me to be a chicken sitter, but I did.  By “being favor” to Chris it has caused him to continue seeking things about faith and God.  Our prayer is that he comes to accept the Friend that loves him more than any other.

Maybe you don’t have lots of friends or even one that would come to rescue you in the midst of trouble; there is someone who will be there every time.  Jesus is that friend and is willing to be anything you need Him to be in your life.  All you have to do is give Him a call … He’ll meet you wherever you are.  (P.S.  It may or may not involve chickens!)

What A Friend We Have in Jesus – the story behind the hymn.
Until next time, be favor to a friend this week!

Wherever the Wind Blows

With a hitch …that’s how things went over the weekend.  I know, that’s not how the saying goes.
However, there were a few waves in the water that got us pretty wet and tried our faith.   Let's say it wasn't "paradise" and we didn't embrace the entire journey we were on throughout the week.
In a perfect world things would always happen without a hitch or a glitch in them, but we don’t live in that world do we (at least not yet).

Split Second Decision

Do you remember in my last post how I was “fretting” over the music for an upcoming event?  Well, by the time Sunday came I was feeling confident about all the plans we made and that we were good to go.

We arrived at a church where we were supposed to minister, in plenty of time before the service.  My husband was going about doing the things he needed to get ready for what he had to do, and I was checking things out with the sound system person.

I handed my split track CD to the lady in charge and requested a quick run through for sound.  As I stood on the platform waiting for my cue in the song, nothing happened.  The only thing coming out of the speakers was the background singers, and no music.

Trying to convey to her that this isn’t right was difficult, because she had never seen a CD like this.  I went to the booth and looked at the system to see if she had both speakers on; she did.  Apparently the person that had set up the system didn’t explain how to use it in various situations.

What was I going to do? Something I have learned throughout the years in singing for an audience was that you always need to be prepared with more songs than you plan on doing.  By now it was twenty minutes before the service and I had to scramble through my songs to see which ones I could do without music or without background singers.  Then in a split second decision the solution came and I knew what to do.

The Windy City

When you enter the sanctuary the first thing that anyone will notice is the large painting behind the pulpit.  It depicts the scene where Jesus is walking on the stormy sea and holds out His hand for the Apostle Peter to grasp.
Looking at that painting the Holy Spirit dropped something into my spirit. There was a song that I hadn’t thought of singing, but did bring the music for it.  I didn’t practice it like some of the other songs, but did go over it a few times only because I love the message it presents.
Without hesitation I handed the woman another CD that didn’t need the split track speakers.  The song was titled, “Wherever the Wind Blows.” (God is moving.)

At that time I didn’t know the exact topic that my husband was going to speak on other than James chapter 1 and focus on the first eight verses.

“My brother, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

The song fit perfectly because it deals with the promise that wherever the wind blows, God is moving and He is present.  If there is even a breeze, God is demonstrating that He is part of it.  When we act in faith and trust Him, God will deliver us to a place of safety.

No matter what we are experiencing, God knows about it and is present.  He isn’t in another part of the universe tending to something more important than you.  As a child of God, you are foremost on His mind.

The wind was really blowing that morning, so much so that it was a point of conversation. Little did we know how it would play such an important role in the service.

Everyday Storms
There isn’t a day in the life of a believer that you aren’t in some part of a life storm.
The main thing that we are to remember is that whether you are heading into a storm, in the middle of it, or coming out of a storm in your life, God is always there.
There’s a passage in the Bible that talks about when the disciples were in a boat and they saw something walking in the midst of the sea.  Peter called out and questioned if it was Jesus.  After he recognized that it was actually Jesus walking on the water, he got so excited that he asked for permission to leave the boat and join the Lord in the water. (Or should I say, "ON" the water.) I think many people forget what truly happened here.  Briefly this is what Matthew 14:22-33 (NKJV) states:

“Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat …but the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.  In the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.  When the disciples saw Him, they trembled in fear saying, “It’s a ghost!” Right away Jesus spoke and said, “Be of good cheer!  It is I; don’t be afraid.”

There were still doubtful that it really was Jesus, so Peter makes a request that would verify who was out there in the dark.

Peter called to Jesus, “If it’s You, command me to come to You on the water.” So Jesus said, “Come.”  When Peter got out of the boat he walked on the water to go to Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink!  Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” At once Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter and said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” and when they got into the boat, the wind stopped.”

Let’s look at what this really means.

Point 1: God will call you into something deeper than you can handle on your own so your faith can be tested.

God is the One who sent the disciples out at night, in the storm, for their faith to be tested. Peter is the only one who took the test.

The moment Peter jumped out of the boat, he left his comfort zone and did something he never thought he could do … walk on water!  He had to get out of where he was and leave that safe place. Peter was able to do that because Someone greater than himself was already out there (on the water).  If God is doing the testing, He will not let you go where He isn’t going to be.

Point 2: Peter didn’t make a move until Jesus spoke to him signaling the OK.  We aren’t to move unless we are sure it’s God speaking in the situation.

Once he knew it was the Lord, Peter didn’t think twice about running to Jesus, and totally trusted that the Lord would stay with him as he ventured out in deep waters.

Point 3: Wavering is a choice. Don’t look at the storm, focus on Jesus.

Something happened though.  As soon as he saw the wind it caused Peter to look at the storm.  Peter became tossed with the wind and wavered.  How quickly he forgot he was already walking on the water.

When Peter took His focus (eyes) off of Jesus and His destination, he began to sink into the dark sea.  In a panic, Peter called out (I imagine it was more like a shout) to Jesus to rescue him.  He failed the test of faith and had to take it again ( … and again and again).  He received nothing from that experience of walking on the water, because fear overtook faith.

Point 4: Jesus isn’t moved by the storm; the storm is moved by Him.

We often do the same thing that Peter did when the storms of life seem to be taking us under.  The truth of the matter is that Jesus wasn't moved by the storm, but was moved by Peter’s request for help.

God is not waiting for you to go down in defeat, but is waiting to see you through to the other side of the storm.  We know this because the wind didn’t stop until Jesus escorted Peter back to the boat – a safe place.  Jesus won’t let you go through the storm alone, but walks beside you all the way.

Point 5: There is Light in the storm.

Jesus stood there in the midst of the storm so Peter would let Him be the Light he needed in a dark place.  Not only was the Lord with Peter, He stayed with him and never left.  Peter didn’t notice that God was in the wind in the middle of the storm and moved on the water despite what was going on around Him.  Like Peter, we don’t always remember that storms don’t control the Creator of the wind.  No wonder we miss out on the favor of God so much, when we fail to walk by faith.

Everything else but …
For the evening service we made arrangements to work with other equipment so everything went fine that night.
In my prayers before I went to bed, I asked God what went wrong.  He said (in my spirit), “You prayed over everything else, but the equipment!  Of course!  Oh, I should have known that!

How could I have forgotten to pray for the equipment?  I’ll tell you how.  During the weeks before, I asked my husband to get out the sound system so we could make sure everything was working correctly.  He told me, “We’re not bringing ours; they just got a new system installed this summer so we’ll be using theirs.”  I didn’t give it another thought, and therefore, I didn’t think to pray over their equipment like I do over ours.

It made sense to me now, because satan didn’t want me to sing that song or any song for that matter.  He was counting on me giving up and skipping the music altogether when I couldn’t use my CD’s. This was why I was having such an issue with the music.  Focusing on which songs I sang took my eyes temporarily off the message on wavering, but God already knew what would happen.

Come into the Water with Me

I am so thankful that as I waited to enter the platform area, my seat was situated directly in front of that portrait of Jesus with His hands stretched out.  It was as if God was directing me to come join Him in the deep waters where He would walk through the storm with me.  God wasn’t referring to the CD situation, but the events that would take place throughout life.

Everything tied to the message of faith that was preached that morning … the songs, the prayer, the Message and the wind.  God moved on the hearts throughout the entire service all because the direction changed.

The Storm Behind the Painting

We had never been to this church before and were not aware of the background of the portrait.  After the people were dismissed from the service one lady came up to me and asked if we were staying for the meal.  She knew we had some difficult situations pending and didn’t know if we needed to leave.  I informed her that we would be able to stay for a short time, but that I would like to see the building if that were possible.  It gives me great pleasure being able to view the things that God is doing for His church.

Making our way around the building we came to a little room outside the Pastoral offices.  It was their wall of fame dedicated to those who have done great things for the Lord.  Every person mentioned on that wall had gone on to their eternal home.

The first person to be recognized was the young artist of the portrait in the sanctuary.  Shortly after she finished the work this woman was struck down in a car accident on her way home from church.  I couldn’t help but see how God has favored her by continuing to honor the work of her hands.  Her ministry for the Lord through art is still going on, even though she isn’t here to see it.  The message of hope in Jesus remains, as He stretches out His hand to anyone who will take it.

There’s Favor on the Water

Over 2,000 years ago Peter found favor on the water when he reached out to Jesus.  The storm wasn’t a problem for the Lord then and it isn’t now.
There are always going to be storms as long as we live on this earth, but be assured, Jesus is there.

Let me remind you that Peter walked on the stormy water too, even when his focus was blurred. He did it with Jesus.  The Bible doesn't say Jesus carried Peter back to the boat.
Peter is the only person to have ever done that, but he isn’t the only one that can do it. By faith all things are possible, however the impossible won’t happen if we don’t step out of the comfort "boat" zone as Peter did.

You may be like me and overlook some things in your prayers at times, but don’t let that stop you from going where God wants to take you. Instead, give God praise because He is in the middle of our prayers and already has the answer worked out before we know there is problem.
Jesus knew Peter's faith was being tested, and was in the water before Peter.

Will you do me a favor this week?  In prayer give thanks for the times when God has gone ahead of you so that His favor can be demonstrated in your life.  Thank Him for calling you into the deeper things in life so that your faith can be proved.
Finally, be mindful of the wind; know that God is in it and moving loving favor in your direction.  Never let go of God’s hand … He will take you back to the boat.

"Where there’s a breeze, hope is alive.  On wings of love He will arrive … wherever the wind blows!"
Praise You in this Storm  Casting Crowns

Until next time, wherever the wind blows,
God’s favor is there!

Anticipation

Please don’t tell me it’s Friday already.  Is it me or are the days flying by?

Days seem to be on full speed, but that’s not the case when it comes to hearing from the Lord this week.

I’ve been waiting and waiting for prayers to be answered and the anticipation is putting me way behind schedule.

"Ketching-up"
Do you remember that old Heinz ketchup commercial where they used the song "Anticipation" by Carly Simon?  It was back in the 70’s when they first used the idea.  Hungry people wanted their favorite ketchup and they wanted it immediately.

In order to get what they anticipated, they would have to be patient, which called for what would seem to be an abnormal amount of time to wait. The point of the advertisement is that the product is worth the wait.

Have you ever felt like that?  You know, waiting for some good news or a good report and it seems to be taking forever? (Like waiting for this post hopefully.)

With so much to do, we need results right away.  If I don’t get what I need now, it will throw everything off and I won't get everything done I need to, on time.  Waiting is out of the question, right?  The main thing I have difficulty in is waiting, especially on God. He keeps my anticipation levels really high.

It actually started last weekend when my husband asked me to sing for some upcoming services he was doing.  The problem wasn’t the singing, but which songs he wanted me to sing that would welcome the Holy Spirit into the services.  I had been praying for some enlightenment and kept questioning my husband about the topic of his messages.   We had been informed that the congregation was experiencing some rather unusual circumstances, so we were seeking the Lord’s guidance in what we were to do for them in the way of ministering.

It’s important that the songs line up with what the Lord wants to do in the service, and I know that I don’t need to know what the message is for God to work, but when He does let me know, it helps.  In this case, neither God nor my husband gave me any assistance (I think they were working together on this one.) Nada, zilch, nothing …

My problem is that the teacher part of me was trying to take over and have everything in order.  If I had the songs in place I could move on to another task for that event concerning literature, equipment, contacts, etc. It wasn’t happening.  I just kept pushing, and pushing for results.

Stop Overthinking!  Give it a rest already!

Without any direction I asked a friend of mine to pray that God would reveal His Will to me concerning these matters.

On Tuesday she gave me some encouraging words that I should have taken as a sign from God.
However, because of my anticipation and eagerness to get started, I didn’t receive the simplicity of her answer as being direction from the Lord.

This is what she said,
“I don’t think you should over think your song.  Let God guide you.  He knows who will be hearing your song and who NEEDS your song.  He will make it work…
I’m getting the feeling that it doesn’t matter about the fit, but reaching out to someone in need.  We don’t know what that is, but God does. … Just a feeling.  Let God tell you.”

Sounds like something I would be telling a client myself doesn’t it?

The day was a practically nothing day.  I was trying so hard to focus; I lost focus on everything else.  That morning I even sent my husband out with this assignment, “Go get me some good news about God giving favor to someone.  I figured my answer might be "out there" and a Word or "sign" to guide what we were to do (rather than wait on God, of course). When he returned home that night I sought out an answer from him.  He came home with this exciting news, “I got to come home.”

Wait a minute, that’s not exactly what I was expecting in anticipation of his answer.  So on Wednesday I requested he do the same thing.  Go find out what God is doing in the body of Christ in extending His favor this week.”  He came home and said the same thing, “I got to come home.  Apparently he had used up his word limit for the day, because he didn’t have anything else to say.

Meet Mocha
By early evening on Wednesday both of us were sitting on the couch emotionally exhausted, getting almost nothing accomplished on our lists.   The night being far from over we had to give one of the rescue cats we are caring for his medicine and IV.
His name is Mocha and he is an elderly Siamese cat between the ages of 12-15.  At this time he hadn’t eaten for days and had been diagnosed with kidney failure, so was in need of specialty care (which we do).

In the beginning Mocha was very weak and would hold still for the injections, but about two weeks in he was gaining some strength and was harder to handle. Now it takes both of us to do this, with my husband administering the medicine by holding in the needle under the skin and me holding the cat down with both arms.  This is a really uncomfortable procedure and I do what I can to keep the cat calm whilst trying not to get stuck if he moves.  (Hopefully I'll get the video up on You Tube this week for you to see.)

In a sitting down position with Mocha on a table, I embrace him and keep my chin rested on his head while I whisper to him the entire time he is being medicated.  It takes about 5-10 minutes depending on how much fluid he needs.  Normally I talk to him quietly and thank God for healing Mocha, but that night I prayed continually in the Spirit.  It was the most relaxed Mocha had ever been. The next day he didn’t need as much fluid, ate better and was more active.

Surrounded by Favor
Late Thursday night I realized that my anticipation was fine, but my timing wasn’t.  The Lord knew I was seeking Him and His will to be done, but I didn’t trust my own faith in God to be enough.  I felt that I should be doing more as I waited.

It was like the Abram/Sarai complex was trying to take over and help God out or rush Him along so I could stay on schedule.

Do you remember their idea of helping God move things along? If you have read the book of Genesis chapter 16, you know how that turned out … not good.  It's best to let God alone, and that's what I finally did.

When I relaxed and just let God work with Mocha, the results were immediate.  The Lord had been active in our home all week and was trying to get both of us to just relax and let Him work.  When my husband gave his answer to my favor question, he wasn’t trying to be smart or funny, but was serious.  If you have listened to any of the newscasts this week, you are quite aware of all the disasters and killings of Christians that have taken place.  God’s favor shield of protection had been in effect the entire time.

Remaining where we were kept us out of danger and allowed us to be effective for Christ right where we were at that time.  We were already praying, studying and seeking guidance.  Direction was on its way, but came as slow as that ketchup from the bottle.  God gave us what we needed at the time we needed it, and that's what we are to keep in mind.

Just because it looks like nothing is happening or appears that God’s not interested in your prayers isn’t the case.

“But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You.  For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.” (Psalm 5:11-12 NKJV)

Before we went to bed I asked my husband, “Do you think we’ve been working too hard on this and haven’t let it flow?  (Yeah, now the thought kicked in.) He didn’t respond verbally, but both of us stopped fretting.  I can’t say that we were rejoicing or even outwardly joyful (you know we had already spent our energy on fretting), but we did know that as the Righteousness of God, we were about to be blessed.

God does expect us to anticipate His answer when we pray, but He isn’t about to rush on the response just because we want it immediately.  In order for everything to work out according to His plan, it has to be according to His timing as well.

I'm Gonna Wait ...

In a way this has been rather comical, because one of the songs I sing is called, “I’m Gonna Wait on the Lord.”  Look at the last line:

“I’m gonna wait on the Lord, and I’m not gonna rush anything He’s got planned.  I’m gonna wait, and leave it in His hands.”

The answer was there all the time, just like your answer is.  Whatever God is doing in your life you can be sure it’s going to be good and will send favor your way.  You’re not behind schedule; everything will fall into place as God makes your way prosperous.

Mediate on His Word and believe the outcome is going to be good and right on time.

It’s true, anticipation may be keeping us waiting, but waiting on the Lord is worth it.

Until next time, keeping looking. You’re bound to see God’s favor!
