Beyond Doing Good

There once was a preacher, a Levite and a Samaritan … sounds like an opening to a joke doesn’t it?

However, if you’ve been following along for this discipleship journey (and read Luke 10 which I know you all have) you already know that it has to do with a parable that Jesus told to His disciples.

What could possibly be the link between these three men that Jesus made sure to point out in the scriptures, and what does it have to do with being a Christ follower?  Let me begin with something that the Lord brought to my attention that happened in the summer of 2004.

Welcome new friends this week from:

In the Heat of the Day

It was a hot and humid August afternoon, the kind where all your clothes just stick to you because of the heat.  My husband and I happened to be at my mother’s house, but no one else was there.

While talking I got up and walked over to glance out their glass front door in the banquet hall.  I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but liked to see the traffic on the highway that passed by their home.  I guess it was a habit I got from childhood when we would sit on the front porch counting cars or playing some sort of vehicle guessing game.

Anyway, during our conversation I noticed a young couple with backpacks walking on the side of the road and didn’t think anything of it until they sat down along the highway.  About a minute later they got up and walked past the house and sat down by the woods to get out of the sun.

Being a woman of curiosity I naturally wanted to check this out for myself.  So I called to hubby!  You didn’t think I was going out there now did you?

Getting up from the sofa he came over to the door.  Pointing to the couple I asked him to “go see” if they were alright and to give them each a Pepsi and cold bottled water.

A Drink in My Name

Being the obedient man that he is, hubby grabbed the beverages and crossed the front lawn in a diagonal toward the woods on the right of the property.  Knowing that we are to offer a drink to someone in the name of Jesus, that’s what he did. (Mark 9:41)

“For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you,
he shall not lose his reward.

“Are you guys alright?” Hubby asked as he approached the man and woman.  At first the two thought they were doing something wrong, but he assured them that all he was concerned about was their well-being.

He didn’t ask anything else but handed them the drinks when they started to share their story.  Being homeless, without money or a vehicle, they had been walking for days, sleeping wherever they could and eating very little.  You didn’t really need to hear the story, because all anyone had to do was look at their tired and drained bodies to know something wasn’t right.

How Far Is Atlantic City?

The pair foraged across country: destination, “truck driving school” in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Their mission was for both of them to secure their CDL (Commercial Driver's License) and contract a position as team drivers for a cross country trucking company.

After sharing their story hubby inquired if they had a place to stay once they arrived in AC.  Not having that luxury, their plan was to sleep on the beach or in a park.

Looking up at my husband the man asked, “How far is Atlantic City from here?”  He told them approximately 55 miles.  Pulling themselves up from the ground they both let out a weary sigh and said that they had better get back on the road.  At that point hubby told them to sit tight and he would be back in a few minutes.

As He Is, So Are We

When my husband came back in the house and related their story, we knew right away what we needed to do.  As disciples of the Lord, we are to be as Jesus was in this world when He walked the face of the earth. (1 John 4:17)

“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world.

While I was busy rummaging through my purse to see if I had any cash, hubby got on the phone to a rescue mission that we supported and ministered at in Atlantic City.  He made arrangements for them to stay there in a safe clean environment while they attended the driving school.  As he was hanging up the phone I came in with the cash that I had on hand, and together with what he had in his wallet, we were able to give them enough to buy two tickets from the bus station twelve miles away.

Leaving by the front door, hubby called and motioned for them to come to the car.  With backpacks and beverages in hand they got into our Blazer.  En route my husband stopped at a fast food restaurant (don’t remember which one) and purchased a sack full of burgers and fries for their bus ride.

Was it Enough?

Once in the car, the couple really opened up and talked about everything under the sun.  Hubby inquired about their relationship with Christ and they both said they received Jesus as their Savior in their teens, but never really followed the practice of Christianity.

Arriving at the bus station the wait was only about ten minutes until the next departure for the coastal city.  With detailed instructions on how to get to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission they stated their gratitude and boarded the bus.

Never hearing how things turned out for the couple, we prayed they would rediscover their first love in Jesus and all would work out on their behalf.  Something my husband and I are aware of is that God put them before my eyes for a reason, and it was a test to see what the “children of the Lord” would do.

If it is within our power, we are to do good every time the situation arises.  Taking a look at the passage in Luke chapter ten, I’m still not sure we did enough.  (James 4:17)

“Therefore to him that knows to do good,
and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Turn of Evidence

I really can’t tell you how many times I’ve read the account of the Good Samaritan throughout my life.  Every time I read it or hear it preached, I see it in a different light and wonder if there is more to the childlike story we’ve been told as believers.  (Luke 10:25-37)

The situation begins with a lawyer who in his own eyes is a pretty good Jewish, God fearing man.  He turns to Jesus after listening to the Messiah teach, and asks how to receive eternal life.

Knowing the line of questioning this solicitor had in mind, Jesus turned the inquiry around by putting the man in an awkward position forcing him to respond with some aspect of intelligence.

Responding Jesus said, “What does the law say?”  Referring to the Pentateuch and Laws of Moses, without hesitation the barrister answered correctly.

Giving no more attention to the matter Jesus calmly acknowledged he was correct and that if he did those things he would live (eternally).  You might think that satisfied the legal eagle, but not so … he kept up with the cross examination of Jesus.

A Priest, a Levite and a Samaritan

Continuing the interrogation, the lawyer smugly asked “Who is my neighbor?”  Jesus took position and shared the parable of the “Good Samaritan”.

After Christ described who a neighbor was, it is doubtful that the lawyer was pleased with the answer.  He gives no evidence that his intentions toward all humanity were that of stewardship, compassion or mercy, but that of mere selfishness.

What Jesus was conveying is that a neighbor isn’t just the people who live next door to you.  A “neighbor” is any one that you have an opportunity to show mercy on (do good to/for by showing unmerited favor) expecting nothing in return.

When God puts us along the path of others it is for a reason.  We are to “go and do” like the Samaritan did by showing mercy and compassion on any individual in need regardless of religion or position in life.

Samaritans of Mercy

Scriptures point out specific things that the Samaritan actually did for a total stranger.  He took care of him physically going to the point of giving up his own transportation by placing the left for dead man on his animal.

We learn how he cared for him throughout the night by providing food, lodging and medical help.  When it came time for him to leave, the Samaritan paid all the bills for the traveler and gave his word that any further expenses would be taken care of when he returned.

Who represents the Priest in this parable?

Who represents the Levite in this parable?

Without going into deeper study at this point, I’d like you to take notice that the priest and the Levite saw what happened.  They witnessed a man who was in desperate need, but instead of doing as the “law” stated, they literally did nothing and crossed the road to get as far away from the situation as possible.  Now that wasn’t very “neighborly” for those who the world would consider “God fearing” men.

Jesus - our neighbor and Good Samaritan.

The Samaritan helped and did everything needed.  He went above and beyond caring for a stranger much like what Jesus has done for us.  In this passage Christ is depicted as the “type” of Samaritan who cares and loves us so much that He died on the cross for our sins while we were yet strangers to the Kingdom of God.   He saw our battered lives, picked us up, washed away our dirty sins and lovingly welcomed us into His house.

When I think back in my life I honestly cannot recall where I did all that the Samaritan had done.  Sure we’ve given meals, cups of water, a place for lodging and even sowed vehicles over the years … but when did I ever follow up or “go back” as this parable man did?  Have I turned out to be more like the tongue wagging lawyer than the sacrificing ancient of days servant?

This Week’s Challenge:
Beyond Doing Good

Over the years I’ve had plenty of chances to be the disciple Jesus asks of me. There were probably times where I’ve even crossed the street to avoid getting involved in a situation that I deemed a bit messy.  However, there was that one time specifically … what could we have done differently?

Looking back we have wondered why we didn’t ask the couple if they would like to pray the sinner’s prayer or rededicate their lives to Christ, after all, both admitted they had fallen away from Him.  Did they really know what accepting Jesus as their Savior was or were they just familiar with the terminology?

Our challenge this week requires that we go beyond doing “good” by getting more involved in being a type of Christ that reflects the goodness of God beyond normal reaction or measure.

We need to understand that those of unbelief are like that couple, who were travelers going nowhere, yet thought their destination was all planned.  God sent people along their path but who knows how many noticed and crossed the street to avoid getting involved when they realized they were homeless and penniless?  How many Samaritans of mercy were put in place before and after we came into contact with that wayward pair?

As modern day Disciples of Christ we have read the books, studied scriptures and basically know what to do … the preacher and Levite knew what God said on the subject of doing good too.  Hey, even the unsaved know how to do “good” in some manner!

Are we still crossing roads of avoidance when our path is jammed up with the unlovely issues of life?  Do we run from opportunities to share the favor of God through eternal salvation with others, instead of embracing the situation to lead someone to Heaven’s doors?

Although we may not always be in the position to help someone in the future, there is Someone who can and will – Jesus.  His mercy – unmerited favor is for now and eternity.  He is the best friend and neighbor that everyone needs, because no one will ever care for you like Jesus.

How A-meowsing!

3 month old rescue Quiggley will not let me work!
Hey – don’t leave!  I’m so glad that you have visited today and am always blessed when you do.  For that reason I like to keep you informed as much as possible when it comes to posting on this interactive blog.

Since this is a current site many of you know that it’s based on what’s happening in my life.  Well, I’m in the middle of university classes and tests to stay up to date with my counseling.

A piece of cake, only 12 classes - ugh!  I know, “it’s only a test” (actually 12)… and yes, I still have to study and sometimes get butterflies in my stomach before testing.  Please be mindful of me in your prayers!

You may ask, "Why do you keep up with your studies?"  I serve Christ and this is the reason:

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need
not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.
(2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)

Usually I can keep up with regular activities while teaching and testing, but with all the extra “events” happening I need to be more focused.  Lately that has been problematic … I can’t imagine why! (lol)

Class however isn’t dismissed … please prepare for the next post by reading Luke chapter 10 to see where God’s favor was applied.

Missing you already …

Blessings of Favor,

Fay

Lead with Joy

You didn’t hear us laughing did you?”  I asked the nurse as she entered the room.

With a huge smile on her face Tauna replied, “Yes, we all heard you.  You two are always up to something.”

What else was there to do?  For the past hour my husband had been through a rather lengthy doctor’s visit and now waiting for some results we were left on our own.  I don’t know why, but shortly after the giggles emerged and hubby set the laughing meter on “high”.

At the end of the doctor’s visit, the nurse was instructed to take some blood for a specific test that was needed immediately. The rest of the blood work was to be done the following day at the hospital.

For some reason my husband is a difficult subject when it comes to drawing his blood.  Finding someone to do it without jabbing him a jillion times has become a quest for us.  I keep telling the medical staff to let us bring in one of the rescue cats and they’ll have plenty of blood, but they haven’t taken me up on it yet.

Failing to get the task done, Tauna decided that all the lab work could be done the following day, and she’d get the documents needed together for us to pick up later in the afternoon.  With that being handled all that was left to do was get the prescription forms from the doctor for the medications.

Returning to the room with a clipboard in her hand, Tauna was true to her word.  She hustled and got as much done as she could on her end, even setting up the appointment with the neurosurgeon.  Handing my husband the clipboard she explained that he needed to sign a release form that said he wouldn’t sell any of the medications.  This was something new that we never had to do, so of course he couldn’t let it slide and I knew hubby was about to get into trouble … again!

Opened for Favor

Taking the clipboard while signing, shaking his head as if disappointed my husband said, “ …. well there goes the new TV we wanted.”  Grabbing the paper Tauna burst out laughing and affectionately sent us on our way (it’s a nice way to say “escorted us out”) and said they would “call” when to pick up the rest of the paperwork.

Several hours went by and we still hadn’t heard from the doctor’s office.  I was concerned that my husband wouldn’t be able to get the medication for that evening.  Finally the information was relayed to the druggist.

It was almost 4:25 p.m. and we needed to get to the pharmacy by 4:30.  Knowing that a disciple of Jesus couldn’t break the law and speed, there was no way we’d be able to get there before closing time.  I suggested (Okay – urged intently) that hubby call saying he was on his way, and ask if they would remain there until we arrived.

Pulling up to the building we saw a person standing on a chair inside the store looking like she was about to pounce anyone who entered.  Hesitantly opening the door hubby looked up and asked, “Are you going to hit me?”  Apparently they had already closed.  The receptionist said, “No, the lock is above the door and I’m the only one who can’t reach it.”  They kindly showed us favor and reopened the door.

National Bless Your Pharmacy Day

After we finished at the hospital on Thursday, we wanted to be a blessing to the people at the pharmacy who went out of their way to show us favor.  Upon arriving with a gift in hand, we made an announcement that “We declare that today is National bless your pharmacy day.”  With excitement and joy they received the present with gladness.

When we gave that gift to the staff it wasn’t because we were looking for applause or praise.   With joy we were fulfilling scripture in several ways and were obedient as disciples as Jesus was in the world. ( 1 John 4:17)

The Bible states that those who bless God’s children will in turn be blessed or receive favor.  To honor God we needed to bless those people, because they showed us favor.

“I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3 NKJV)

In order for us to be the disciples God wants us to be through blessings, we had to already be blessed in some form in order to carry out the command.  If we are not blessed by God, we cannot be a blessing to others.  As children of Light the Lord has a responsibility to bless us as our Heavenly Father.

You Need to Live Blessed

What is the reason we are to live a blessed life?  Psalm 67 is the cornerstone of what the Lord wants His disciples to convey about Him.  The message is that He is good and merciful all the time.

God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us, Selah

That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.

Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth. Selah

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Then the earth shall yield her increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.  (Psalm 67 NKJV)
Since God is good, other blessings are factored in as heirs of Christ Jesus.  God’s favor is revealed when His face shines on us.  His reason for doing this is so ALL the earth will come to know His ways.  Salvation will be spread throughout the nations and people will begin to sing praises to God.  If we are to follow as true disciples of Jesus, when we are blessed by Him we tell others about His favor on us which causes people to turn to God.

We are blessed to do good as Christ did on this planet.  The Apostle John explained that Jesus did so many good works to glorify the Father that there were too many to write down.

“And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.” (John 21:25 NKJV)

When God calls us to do good works we have to be joyfully blessed to be effective. We cannot bless someone if we are not indeed blessed.  It’s great to be a godly witness by being strong when going through something traumatic, but people need more than that if they are to be “won” to Christ.  Living a joyfully blessed life is a powerful tool we have as believers if we are to lead others to Jesus for discipling.

We cannot give what we don’t have and that’s why the psalmist asks God for His blessings.  He maintains that a blessing on God’s people would cause the rest of the world to fear Him, acknowledging that He is the One True God.

David gives us the reason for his request for blessings in his Psalm 119:17 prayer.   When we are bountifully blessed it makes it possible for us to be the blessing we are called to be.

“Deal bountifully with Your servant that I might live and keep Your Word.” (Psalm 119:17 NKJV)

The King wanted to do so much to honor God that it would take the release of His favor to accomplish all that was in his heart.  Can you relate to that?  I surely can.

The blessing included the joy he needed to accomplish his work as a servant of God.  With so many negative things that happened in his life, David couldn’t afford to fall into a depressed state giving satan an open door squashing his desires to please the Lord.  Here is why the blessing of joy is so important.

The unsaved world can show certain amounts of peace or joy in their life when they are in control of their environment and things are going fine.  As soon as tragedy hits they no long maintain that level of control and therefore the peace and joy leave their spirit.

Christians maintain peace and joy for another reason – Jesus.  Being blessed doesn’t mean we are without conflict, but that we maintain joy because of the life we have in Jesus Christ.

A dear friend of mine who was facing a difficult situation once told me, that either way she wins because she was confident of the promise for a good end as God’s child.  Knowing the truth that God is good is a reminder that Romans 8:28 will come to pass in our lives.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”  (Romans 8:28 NKJV)

This passage lets us know that not every situation comes from God (because we have a free will), but because we love Him He will use things that do enter our lives and turn them around for His purpose so that they speak good of Him and us.

It’s Not Negotiable: God is Good, ALL the Time

Over the years we’ve experience some tragic things, but have also witnessed others who have as well.  The ones that have put their faith in God are thriving and still singing His praises.  They know God is good all the time and that is not negotiable.  They are changing lives and winning souls because God’s face shines on their submissive hearts.

For those who haven’t trusted in Christ, they were not able to cope.  There isn’t any peace or joy in their lives, because their faith isn’t based on God but in themselves.  God cannot bless them if they haven’t trusted in Him as their Creator.  It’s impossible for them to spread joy because they cannot share what they don’t possess.

Circumstances don’t change God, He changes circumstances.  He is good, has always been good and always will be good.  If sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross doesn’t convince people of His goodness, mercy and love toward mankind, nothing will.

Although my husband was experiencing things beyond his control, he continued to do good works and maintained his joy by spreading joy to others through humor.  He was able to distribute something that he possessed – joy, which is a gift from the Holy Spirit (the jury is still out on the humor aspect).

The joy remained because it didn’t come from him, but God.  He believes in the promises of the Lord for good reports and makes mention of it in public.

“That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.” (Psalm 67:2)

Every place we visited said they felt better when we left (Hmmm … I could take that another way!), because we were able to lift their spirit in a difficult situation.

As I’m writing this it’s stormy and we’re waiting to return to the hospital.  We aren’t sure where the next part of our journey will take us, but know that it will be led with joy knowing God is in control.

This Week’s Challenge:
Lead with Joy

Throughout the week I stayed in prayer and scripture, but when it came to putting my thoughts down I wasn’t sure what to say.

“Lord, what do you want me to write and share with others?”  In my spirit I heard, “What have you been experiencing this week?”  Gathering my notes it didn’t seem like much, but in each situation we entered it with the blessing of joy.

Our weekly challenge will take into account how we approach every situation we face.  How are we leading others as disciples of Christ?   Are we blessing others by leading with joy so that others see our God is good?

There isn’t one place in scripture that says Jesus left them in a mess, feeling bad and in a stupor.  Every place that the disciples saw the Lord minister He led the situation with joy and hope.  People left feeling good, because God had been good to them every time.  He set the tone for the encounter by how He approached it through faith in God the Father’s ability to deliver on His promises.

As your week progresses take notice of how you lead any situation. You may not be led to lead with humor, but you are gifted to lead with something that will turn around a grim situation.

Are you going into it with joy believing that God will work things out for His glory and your good?  If not, stop and think about why you haven’t been able to maintain your joy and peace.  It could be that you are being led by your emotions instead of taking them captive. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

God has promised to give His favor to those who love Him and believe in His power to deliver them out of any problem.  He is a good God all the time, and all the time He wants to bestow blessings on His people.  Take hold of that and let Jesus lead you with the blessing of His exceeding joy.
