Cross Favor

Team Jesus
You find the most interesting people selling things outside of supermarkets, at least hubby and I do.  Last Saturday was no different.

When we entered the building storefront as usual it was clear, easy access with no one parading near the walkways pedaling merchandise.  How quickly things change in a short time.

While leaving the store to our left I saw a boy wearing a tee-shirt with “Team Jesus” printed on the front.  Now that got my attention, and out of curiosity you know I couldn't help but wonder what this kid was selling.

I continued to the left while hubby kept going straight toward the parking lot.  Yep … she did it again!  It’s the story of his life my husband tells me!  He turns around and I’m nowhere to be found.

Realizing that I wasn’t behind him hubby makes an about face only to find me already engaged in a conversation with the young man.  This wasn’t my husband’s first rodeo for this sort of thing.  He absolutely recognizes the equation:

Teacher Meets Kid + Jesus + Curiosity = Prepare for Anything!

Knowing me this could take a while, so he backed up to a pole, braced his foot on the cart and settled in for what he knew would be a long wait.

Sign, sign, everywhere – no signs

Walking toward the teen I noticed a display behind him. It held intricately carved and painted wooden crosses. They were designed in three specific sizes some bearing inspirational sayings like “hope” or the “cowboys prayer”, and others with spiritual quotes or references from the Bible.

Nonchalantly circling around the oversized cross presentation, I baited the seller with questions appropriate for the situation as a perspective buyer.  Okay … he never saw it coming.

Some questions were about the well-crafted merchandise but my main interest was, “Who was he representing?”  Sure, he had a sales pitch but the large four-sided wired exhibit had no sign anywhere on it.  What was this all about, and why a cross?

Not long into our conversation I learned the names of the crew that were sent out on a mission to sell crosses that day.  There were four people representing a men’s discipleship ministry from Texas aging from 16 – 40.  Two were stationed at each entrance of the building.

When I asked about the lack of a sign, the sixteen-year-old member (who was in charge of this end of the marketing) explained that his boss said, “The work of the cross is all they needed.”  I couldn’t disagree with the statement, but the actual identification of the discipleship program was indeed different if he wanted to sell anything ‘round these parts (in our city anyway).

Contradicting his rebuttal, I pled the case that a sign would increase sales by reinforcing the point that I didn't even notice the crosses, but his shirt was the drawing point to his display.  People want to know about the place or cause in which they put their money.

Although I’m not a Texan, it didn’t take long for me to lasso hubby into the situation.  He should have known better being married to me!  We were in this for the long haul … or at least until one of us learned our part in showing favor to these travelers to this fine state!

Around two hours into our conversation we had met the entire crew and heard their inspiring testimonies of how the cross of Jesus delivered them out of their addictions and tragic lifestyles. Now we knew something about the program and why the handmade crosses were so important to each of them.  A sign would have given information, but their words spoke the message of the crosses they were boasting.

Sharing Living Water

During our what might have looked like a vigil of sorts, when leaving the store an elderly lady came up to us and said she had noticed the boys standing in the sweltering heat without anything to drink.

“I have sons … I’m going to get you some water.”

Turning around she marched right back into the store purchasing a 24 pack (case) of water and returned a few minutes later toting it in her arms.  When I expressed my feelings about her kindness it was as if a confess all switch had been turned on and soon we learned why.

“My sister served the Lord and just passed away. You don’t know how long you have so I figured I better get doing it ….”

She didn’t stop there but went on inviting us to meetings a local church was holding over the next few days.  Not only was she seeking to serve by showing favor in blessing the men with fresh drinking water for their earthly bodies, but the message of the spiritual Living Water found only through Jesus was pouring out of her mouth.

Nothing but the Cross

Feeling comfortable in our short fellowship with the “new disciples,” as we learned more about each young man I asked some rather innocent but obvious questions concerning basic equipment needed to carry out this ministerial task effectively.

I asked questions like:

“Why are there no umbrellas or coverings to protect you from the scorching hot 99-degree weather?

 … and

“You serve standing outdoors at each entrance for twelve hours. Why are there no chairs to sit and rest throughout the day?

Tris, the youngest of the group, explained that they were told that it would give an impression to the public of “laziness”, therefore – no chairs, no umbrella and apparently nothing but the “cross” to carry them through the day.

As he was telling the reason behind all they were or weren’t doing, one of the men came over and pulled out the money from a plastic container that was placed at the foot of the cross rack.

I couldn’t dispute his statement “nothing but the cross” either, however based on experience suggested to Dan that he leave something in the money jar to encourage people to give into their cause.  He took my advice and threw a few bucks back into the pail.

Not long after that a lady came from the other side of the building pushing a shopping cart. She stopped and removed one of the crosses from its position on the rack.

“I like this one.  How much is it?

Dan quickly replied, “That one is $35.00.”

“I don’t know if I have that much cash on me.”

Supporting her purse on the handle of the cart she began thumbing through her wallet looking for the appropriate amount of funds for the item.  I couldn’t help hearing the exchange in dialog and kept silent as the servants of God made their pitch.

With a gleam in her eye she smiled as if she didn’t really expect an answer, saying to the boys who didn’t look prepared for anything …

“I suppose you don’t take debits do you?”

Without giving her a moment to change her mind, grabbing the cross out of her hand Dan joyfully announced, “Why yes, yes we do.”

Sale!  Turning her cart around she followed him back to where the debit machine was located at the other entrance!  Nothing but the cross for this customer.

While Dan was off making a sale, I asked Blu what they do about eating and if they took breaks throughout the day.  Tris assured me that they took breaks if needed and that they would eat later.  That’s when both my husband and I knew how God would have us care for these boys to men disciples in new ministry.

"... that there should be no schism (division) in the body (of Christ),
but that the members (believers) should have the same care for one another." (1 Corinthians 12:25 NKJV)

Fair Favor

I can't believe it's that time of the year again ...

FAIR DAYS!

For months we prepare for this county event but there's plenty that can't be done too far in advance (like fresh flower arrangements).

So I guess you know what hubby and I are doing right?

Those who have followed Daily Favor Blog for years know that hubby and I really support our local and state communities.  During this time in the summer we are busy getting things ready for the competition.

Baking, crafts, veggies and floral entries take some time to get everything finished for the correct day each has to be submitted.  You should see our house .... no, that wouldn't be a good idea.  Anyway, you can imagine things everywhere for several weeks before competition.

Due to the hotter than usual weather we won't have as many entries as past years in the flower show, but worked on some that we hope will "fair" well in the competitions.  We prepared several arrangements in containers back in May like always, but some really needed reworking!

I'm so sad that ten of my mini rose bushes didn't make it over the winter, but pleased my favorite yellow one did.  That's gardening as some would say!

Please join us in prayer that the favor of the Lord will rest upon us and bless the work of our hands for "fair" judging. (from Psalm 90:17)  We've learned a lot about that recently in our In Sight of God and Man three part series.

I want to encourage you to use the gifts God has given you whether it is working with your hands, writing, speaking, teaching or anything else.  You can be a living testimony of Light for Jesus , because as His child you are favored by Him.

There's always something great happening at the fairgrounds, so check out what's going on in your community right now and get involved!

Read about some of my past entries in the Open Flower Show.

My Somewhere Over the Rainbow Entry (over 75 fresh flowers in this!)

Until next time, may God favor the work of you hands.

In the Sight of God and Man (Part 3)

Have you ever been in a situation where you honestly didn’t know how you would ever get out of it unscathed?

As an adult I’ve had plenty of experiences where I called on God to bail me out of it, but as a teenager I didn’t have much under my belt to fall back on in the mess I was in over the accident.

How in the world was I going to pay back my friend for the car I just totaled when I didn’t even have a job yet?  Plus, it would take a whole lot of “stuff” I didn’t have in order to get back in my parent’s good graces.  I didn’t have a clue how all this would work out … all I could do was hope it would.

Welcome friends …

I am so thankful for your visit and hope that you come back each week as we spend time in the study of God’s Daily Favor "where faith and favor meet"!©

Mercy and Truth

Months went by and everything seemed to be settled, when a notice arrived for me to appear in court.  Then a letter from the other driver's lawyer came stating that they were going to be suing for damages and that a witness would be called who had seen everything.

My Dad wasn’t a “real” prayer warrior, but mom was and so was our youth group.  Prayer is something I witnessed and learned to do as a child.  Realizing what we were up against the Lord would have to defend the cause if we were to find favor in winning this trumped up case.  King Solomon’s wisdom was heeded.

“My son/daughter, do not forget My law,
But let your heart keep My commands;
For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.

Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart,
And so find favor and high esteem (good understanding)
In the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths. (make them smooth or straight)”
(Proverbs 3:1-6 KJV)

Right then mercy and truth were what we were counting on … mercy of the court and me telling the truth about what really happened that day.

Super Lawyer

Hubby to be told my father about this so-called "witness" and he decided that it would be necessary to get a lawyer.  He hired a lawyer who was probably the toughest and most feared of any in that portion of the state.  This man was no nonsense, direct and just plain tough as nails.

Everything was set for the court date when we were met with another surprise.  The day of the hearing, "Super Lawyer" couldn't make it and sent confident young "newbie" lawyer to fill in for him.  Dad wasn't happy with the situation especially after forking out money for this attorney that came so highly recommended. I could tell how upset he was which added to my nervousness.

Help from Trouble

The proceedings commenced and the other driver's lawyer put on a good show.  He spurted out all sorts of charges, details and information that didn’t make sense.

Scripture tells us to go to the Lord and let Him plead our case. Silent prayers in that courtroom and at home were hitting the Heavens rapidly.

“In my distress I cried to the LORD, and He heard me.
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.”
Psalms 120:1-2 NKJV)

No one could understand where he was getting this stuff, and the judge had enough cutting him off in mid-sentence.

When the judge asked about their witness he was told that he couldn't make it but they would go on nonetheless.  I guess the thought of lying under oath didn't appeal to the man.

Then it was "newbies" turn and you could tell that he was nervous.  Not to be disrespectful, but from the moment he opened his mouth and started deliberating you might have thought that he was for the other side.

Listening to the stand-in that was trying to fight my battle in court, scripture couldn’t have been truer with me thinking,

“Lord give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless!”
(Psalm 60:11)

There was no escaping how terrified I was with my defense strategy and I started growing anxious. The courtroom became so intense as everyone listened to my legal adviser who was sinking me deeper in trouble.  All I wanted to do was stand up and stop this man before he had me found guilty and tossed in jail.

It didn’t look like God had heard our prayers. Who then would deliver and fight for me if He didn’t?  God indeed did hear us and would be faithful to His Word without me having to take the witness stand.

“They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you.
For I am with you, says the Lord, to deliver you.”  (Jeremiah 1:19 KJV)

Several times the judge looked at me as if it were him standing on trial desperately waiting for someone to intervene to get him out of the entire ordeal.  Tapping his hands on the desk he was getting uneasy with how things were going and wanted to put an end to it.

Picture this … it was so bad that while he was still rambling on the Judge stopped him.  Straightening his back, he sat up in his chair and leaned forward on the desk.  Adamantly interrupting my counsel.

"Is any more of this necessary?  Because I had already decided on the young lady's innocence before you started talking. If you continue, I might change my mind!"

“The LORD shall preserve (keep) you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.
(Psalm 121:7-8 NKJV)

Praying that he would adhere to the advice of the Magistrate we waited for his answer with baited breath.

Responding in a quivering voice, "Oh no your honor, I'm finished."

"Good!”

By now Dad was really unsettled quietly saying, "That lawyer almost blew it for us.  I think I just wasted a lot of money."

Turning his chair toward me, he continued with the verdict.

“Miss … you are not guilty.  No points will be assessed to your driving record and the plaintiff has no grounds for suing for damages or court fees."

When he was finished the Judge chastised the man and his lawyer for wasting the court's time on something that was clearly his fault doubting that much truth had actually come from the statements that they had made.

Banging his gavel he proclaimed, "Case dismissed".

Gleaming with pride over winning the case, "newbie" smiled and said, "You're innocent, you may go."

Finding Favor in the Sight of God and Man

With the trouble I was in there was no way I could imagine this turning out for my good, but God knew differently and I began learning about His unmerited, unchanging favor on those who love Him.

“… Don’t forget My law,
… keep My commands so mercy and truth don’t forsake you;
then favor and high esteem will find you
in the sight of God and man.
(Proverbs 3:1-4 emphasis mine)

Listening to the guidance of godly elders when I was young, (Proverbs 1:8) I kept the commands of God in my heart not forsaking the truth (of the promises of God and in telling it).  When I did my part, it allowed God to do His in order for us to have victory.

God will stand and fight for us until we are delivered, if we believe He is able to do more than we can ever ask or think.  He will cause your enemies to scatter and fall in the battle!

The Lord worked out the differences with my father and his worker (owner of the car), which restored my relationship with both of them.  He caused the finances to come in and also rebuked them from being taken by a liar in court.

God heard the prayers of the Righteous giving favor from a discerning Judge despite all the evidence pointing against me.  Mercy and truth had not forsaken me after all.  He honored and esteemed my police report testimony highly, recognized dishonesty reading between the lines of what people were stating as truth.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.
(Psalm 84:11 NKJV)

It has taken many years for me to understand how deep the favor of God really is and how He causes mankind to show it to others.  One life changing thing that I have taken away from this is that His favor doesn’t begin when you can comprehend it, but when you become a child of the Living God.

Now that’s truth you can live by to sing your victory song!
