Start A Soul Fire

It was Thanksgiving Day 2014 around 8 am.  The Family Dollar store was having a big sale on selected holiday items so I wanted to get there early.

I don’t think I’ve ever shopped on this day, but thought they might have some things I needed for craft gifts I was making.

We were almost through our bargain hunting when an older gentleman began talking to us.  His cart was overflowing with toys. The store sale on those things was buy one get one free or 50% off the second item. Customers filled the aisles scurrying around the store hoping to get the best deals before the selections were gone.
Welcome new friends this week from:

I Should Have Gotten His Name
“Scott” (I’ll call him that because I forgot to ask his name.  You can’t fault me though, because this happened before last week’s challenge.  I learned he was a former firefighter, but is still on the Board of Directors in his home town.
He looked to be about 70ish and was shopping for the children of “Burn-outs,” which is when a family loses everything because of a fire.
As he shared the stories of Christmas tragedies Scott showed us what he had purchased for the kids.  He was extremely proud of the selections and pointed out that they were quality items, with no small parts that the children might choke on during play.
I asked him how many families he had to buy for this year and he said none so far. Then Scott told me why he was purchasing toys anyway.
“I buy the toys ahead of time and store them in big plastic bins in the firehouse.  That way, if a fire happens we are prepared.  What we need is already inside the department, and will be distributed at the right time.”
Later that day I was thinking about our conversation in the store with Scott.  The Lord was showing a connection between the fire and being prepared, but it was a spiritual one, not physical.

Fanning the Flame
What the retired fireman was doing reminded me of what Christ did when He made provision for us through the giving of His Holy Spirit.  At that moment no children were on the list for needing toys, but it could change at any time.  He was gathering what “would be”, not “what was” needed.
Scott told me that the children are always overlooked during a tragedy like this, because everyone is focusing on immediate needs, which is understandable.  He was looking at the “least of these” as Jesus put it.  He saw what others missed.
Our faith is ignited through God's Word.
When Scott began this program three years ago, he was the only one who participated in gathering toys. Word got out and spread throughout the neighboring communities.
Two years later it has caught on like “fire” and spread through the southern borders of America.
It was the inner flame of faith in his heart that God and others saw which led to his gaining favor from God and man.
Scott’s actions revealed his heart and the spirit of caring for others is now being carried out by those who have heard his story.  He started a “spiritual fire” that became visible.  By fanning the flame this outpouring of selflessness has been received and duplicated.  Now people bring toys to the fire station without him saying a word.  The firelight of giving and caring started in him; others saw it and the flame now burns brightly making a difference in his community.

Fire Seed
For the next few weeks our family schedule is super tight and stretched beyond what it is normally. Even though that is true, I don’t want to miss my part in doing God’s will along my journey.  It was through study and prayer time that God led me to our focus for the week.
Our Thanksgiving weekend was really busy with out of town traveling, but the Holy Spirit planted a “fire” seed in us to build on something we have been doing for many years during the Christmas season.
Every year we give out gifts for the children in our community and neighboring areas.  This time God expanded the outreach by fanning the flame in an unfamiliar area.
On Sunday we took one hundred and fifty gift packs for children to a church about an hour from where we live.  These included spiritual items as well as candy and coloring supplies for the kids.  They were excited to receive the items and looked forward to distributing them in the area.
Our part was to fan the flame that God had placed in our hearts so that others would grasp hold of what He had for them through salvation.  My friend was so excited to be a part of this that she called another friend as soon as she got home and challenged her on the concept.  The Holy Spirit fire caught hold of her and she could hardly hold back her joy.

Find the Spark – Pass it on
“It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up to its glowing.” is a phrase from the song “Pass It On” written by Kurt Kaiser that we used to sing when I was a teenager.

I grew up with knowing about the Holy Spirit, but didn’t always understand the fire of the Spirit of God that is available to every believer.  It’s something that has to be kindled and nurtured in order to receive the full benefits of power.

Scott knows all about sparks setting things aflame, but he used his inner gift from the Lord to ignite something good.
“John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but One (referring to Jesus) mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirt and fire.” (Luke3:16 NKJV)
God has placed the fire of His spirit in us to spread the Light of Jesus. It is there before we need it so that when the time comes we’ll be prepared to distribute what the Lord has placed on our hearts.  The Holy Spirit fire is the power of God that brings His blessings and favor into the situation or circumstance.
Every Christian needs this to be active in their life and what better time to act on what we’ve been given than at Christmas?

This Week’s Challenge:
Start a Spiritual Fire
Our outer journey continues to challenge us by taking us outside our normal way of doing things.  This week it asks, “What can you/your family do in your community this season that will let others know you are a child of the KING?”  Lots!
God is ready to put His favor on the fire inside us, but we have to prepare for it so we don’t get burned from the devil.  As we begin this family challenge our prayer must be directed toward the pouring out of the Holy Spirit in us so that others may follow.

Holy Spirit, You are the Fire, You are the Flame

You are the Light on the darkest day.

We have the hope, we bear Your Name

We carry the news that You have come to save.

Jesus, start a fire in my soul, fan the flame, make it grow!

Begin this challenge by looking into an untapped area that has a need, but others aren’t seeing it. Ask the Lord to direct you to what it may be so that His hand is on the activity that is geared toward the masses, not just an individual.
Romans 6:23
The gift of God is eternal life.

Our new item of the week is an example of a children’s activity booklet that has a message of salvation and can easily be dispersed anywhere.
Distributing gift packets for children in another city is what we were to do for our challenge; God may direct you to doing something else.  Whatever it is, the task will involve the message of salvation that reflects the Season of Light which is Christmas.
The Holy Spirit is working on your soul to start a fire.  How long will you hide from His voice?  You only need a spark to start a blaze. Fan that flame and pass it on so others can see you are a believer.

Jesus, start a fire in my soul, fan the flame and make it grow!

Start A Fire by Unspoken

Until next time, may God favor you with His Holy fire.

“I have placed My fire within you.”

Repurposed Christians

Several years ago a friend of my husband’s gave us a small charcoal barbecue grill.  It had been ages since we had one like this, because we switched to gas.  His friend was going to throw it out since they replaced it with a larger one, but decided to give it to us.

The hand-me-down grill had seen some serious barbecuing, and its days for working as it was intended only lasted one season.  No longer using it for food we started burning bits of mail with personal information.  I loved the idea that we could recycle the ashes into the garden and re-purpose the grill.

Eventually there was a big hole in the bottom so we couldn’t use it for burning any more.  Now what?  Was it time to give it the old heave-ho?  Can something outlive its purpose?

Don’t miss out on this week’s challenge (below).  Q & A

Re-purposed Grill Flower Box
By now I think you are getting a good idea of what I’m like and know I didn’t chuck the old worn out grill, but actually turned it into something it wasn’t made for originally.

Thinking about this week’s challenge the Lord reminded me of an area I had a hard time dealing with in the past…
“What good am I anymore if my purpose in life has changed?”

When I first started to write I really wanted to call this “Recycled Christians”, but didn’t think it would go over big.  What do you think?  It’s sort of how I feel at times and a feeling I had to deal with if God was to use me for His glory.

My life was all planned out – by me.  I was doing what I wanted teaching special needs children, lived in a great home, traveled, family was nearby, had a good income and basically did whatever I felt like that fell in the boundaries of  a “good” Christian.  My life had purpose … you could say it was a “purpose driven life” so to speak, where I was extremely blessed and favored by God doing wonderful things for Him.  So why did it have to change?

I Didn't Expect This

Have you ever felt like everything you worked for was for nothing?  Maybe you were employed at the same place for years when they decided to let you go by downsizing.
What about those relationships that you thought would last a life time and poof, it was over?  Did you ever reach a dream only to have it snatched away from you?  I’ve got something to say on those situations:

The bad thing about life is that it changes!

The good thing about life is that it changes!

Going over my notes I got a revelation about myself and all believers.  What God showed me concerning our grill is that it was a vessel for whatever I needed and never stopped being a vessel.  The only thing that changed was its purpose, and that was because I decided to change its use.  Vessels get repurposed according to the need.

God revealed to me that He moves people (His vessels) for His purpose.  We don’t always have to be broken to be used if we are already in His will.  Sometimes He moves us when we are no longer needed in certain areas or positions.   What looks like a bad change is in reality a good change only we haven’t recognized it as such.

This was made perfectly clear to us when we moved to a new neighborhood.  The old location we fed 65-120 people every week, but where we are now food programs aren’t an issue.  Our service of feeding people changed and we became vessels God could use for feeding rescue animals with special needs.

Now that might seem strange and not a godly thing, but it fell right into place.  I can’t remember a time when we haven’t fed people and it seemed natural to make meals.  What you don’t know is that God knew the desires of my husband’s heart.

Faithfulness Brings Favor

Since childhood he wanted to become a veterinarian, but was never given the opportunity to go to college for it.  Now he is in position to work with various clinics and animals, discovering a world he thought was out of reach to him.

Although our life is extremely different, it’s never dull and we are exposed to things that we wouldn’t have experienced if we stayed in the same place and remained unchanged.

Seriously, how many of us have gotten the opportunity to work on an alligator, put an IV in a cat, create an instrument for the doctor in surgery or hold a tumor from a dog?  My husband has.  There are some things I really don’t need to know the details of, you know what I mean?

My husband is still a vessel God uses, but he has been re-purposed and re-positioned to be in a place the Lord needs him.  I didn’t understand this at first, but it wasn’t long before I realized why God moved my husband into a new area using the same skills he had.

Allowing God to re-purpose our lives for His use opened doors for me as well in teaching far beyond a regular classroom into college levels and in travel.  With my new vessel assignment God has allowed me to pursue other interests that I didn’t have time for working in the school systems.

Do people outlive their purpose?  Absolutely not, but they can be re-purposed for something even more exciting if they allow God to use them for His plan.

Maybe your life has changed dramatically and you can’t find a reason or purpose for being on Earth, let me remind you of what God has said in Genesis 1:31 (NLT).

“Then God looked over all He had made (including you & me),
and saw that it was very good! (How good? Very good.)”

When God makes a vessel for His use, He may redesign, remold, rebuild, recast, recycle or re-purpose it, but you can be sure it’s never discarded or destroyed.  As long as the vessel is willing to remain a vessel, there is always a purpose for its existence.

“… and the vessel that He made of clay was marred in the hand of the Potter; so He made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the Potter to make.”(Jeremiah 18:4 NKJV)

So maybe we’re going through a bit of reshaping, that’s OK.  Think of it as a spiritual makeover with God footing the bill.  The “newer” vessel is going to be better than the last, do greater things and be more effective.

Vessels of Honor

On this part of our journey back to Jesus we need to take a look at the vessel God wants to use for His glory and to fulfill His promise of giving us a good end.

“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity (sin).  But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.

Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter (dishonor), he will be a vessel of honor, sanctified and useful for the Master (Jesus), prepared for every good work.” (2 Timothy 2: 19-21 NKJV)

When I came to terms with God re-purposing me so He could still use this vessel, I spent most of my time in His Word and prayer.  There really wasn’t much else to do without furniture, television, car or computer.  In the beginning it was a house with walls and a yard … not much to keep one occupied.

That “down time” or what some may say “small beginnings” was exactly what I needed.  It allowed me to develop skills I had, apply them to new ways changing me into a versatile vessel that could be used in so many more areas along my journey.  This is where God is leading us.

“Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work.” (Titus 3:1 NKJV)

Remember the envelope from step 1 in last week’s challenge where you had to list things that changed your life that you couldn’t let go or forget?  No, don’t go get it.  You know what it says.  Anyway, you gave it to God so no peeking.

Looking back on those things, pick the one that really changed your life.  You no longer have that burden, but are letting God repurpose it for your good.  What has the Lord done since that time to turn the situation around?  If you don’t see anything happening it’s time to resubmit the vessel!

Challenge of the Week:
Re-purposed into Vessels of Honor

Last week we learned that we needed to let go of some things in our past so God could do something in our present and future. (See last week's challenge.)

Our challenge this week is to identify the things that may seem to be bad situations and let God re-purpose them making us vessels of honor He can use for every good work.
We’re going to do 2 things to accomplish this task in one week.

1) Become a prayer vessel throughout our study time.

2) Re-purpose our vessel by volunteering.

Need some examples?  Let suppose you lost your job and had to go on government assistance. It’s embarrassing, your pride is hurt and you don’t want anyone to know.

Prayer Vessel: How can God use this situation for good so that you become a vessel of honor?  This is a great opportunity to be humbled giving insight and compassion for something you never understood.  Instead of taking this personally, take it globally praying Matthew 6:9-13 for others in the same situation.

Re-purpose Vessel: Volunteer your skills.  Remember that vessels get re-purposed according to other people’s needs, not our own.

If you were in sales you know how to deal with people.  Use those people skills for an event or program in your community such as fundraisers.

Are you a builder or contractor?  Commit one day to making minor repairs for seniors or widows housing needs.  Fix a sign for someone, nail something back in place, change a light bulb … whatever it takes to get you out of the house and take your mind off of the problem.

Broken relationship? Build one for someone else by introducing people of like interests. A child without grandparents or friends can be matched with people who have lost loved ones.

If you are a teacher who didn’t get asked back for next year, don’t volunteer to teach something around the same age level or subject you taught.  Use those talents for age levels higher or much lower and not for school related things.

By seeking God and allowing Him to re-purpose your life, you will be overwhelmed by the favor He shows you because of your submissive spirit.

Heavenly Father,

Make me a Vessel of Honor for You.
Mold me so I become all that You want me to be.
Manifest the patience of the Holy Spirit in me,
Help me so that I’ll stay and not run.
I submit my vessel; finish the work that You started in me...

Until next time, become a vessel God can favor.

Rolled Sleeves, Dusty Knees

With my husband entering the hospital on April 20th, 2015 I knew that I would have to pick up the slack and take on some responsibilities that were usually left up to him.

Not a problem I thought; how hard could it be?  After all most of the household things I already did in some minor form, so a few more things to do shouldn’t be a problem.

How soon I learned that rolling up my sleeves and getting my knees a little dusty would take on a new appreciation of what my significant other did on a daily basis.

Becoming Someone Else

It has been almost a month since I’ve taken on the role of my husband’s obligations.  I’m handling things better now, but that wasn’t so when I began this new role playing.

The first day that I needed to “be hubby” I was feeling rather confident that I could do all that he did plus my own chores without any real setbacks.  Actually it went pretty well the first and second days, but by the third day I was beyond tired and let’s say not as resourceful as I should have been.

I had been in the hospital by my husband’s side for almost three days with the exception of a few hours to take care of pets and rescues.  My husband had set things up so that I didn’t need to do some things for ten days, excluding feeding the rescue animals and cleaning their areas.

When morning came I needed to “go do” what he does every day, twice or three times a day.  Feeding, checking for wounds and playing with the animals are always rewarding.

On the other hand, I dreaded cleaning litters, scooping throw-up, and wiping up “fragrant” packages the rescues left because they aren’t able to make it to the litter boxes.

By the evening of day three I was slowing down and starting to cut corners so I could get back to the hospital.  Of course this turned out not to be a good thing to do.  That night as I sat on a bucket trying to clean the litters I began to cry, “Lord I can’t do this.  Give me strength to do all I need to for them.”

I heard a voice in my spirit telling me to do the best I could and it would be alright.  At first I thought it was just me looking for a way to cop out, but as I worked my way through the “duty” I felt God giving me strength to do what I needed to for each responsibility.

As I took on the burden of my husband, God took on all my burdens to help me through each day.  Even with lack of sleep and food, the prayers of the Saints sustained me through it all.

Leaving a Deposit No One Wanted

On Tuesday, May 5th my husband had been moved to the surgical wing of the hospital.  By now he was more responsive, but still pretty heavily medicated.  Wednesday was a day of progression and he was sitting up in a chair.

We were chatting when I glanced to my right and noticed a naked body backing into his room.  I told him to look the other way and I quickly went to the door to see who was making a literal appearance.  It was a sweet 80ish year old woman who had gotten lost and thought she was returning to her room.

She was holding her dressing gown that was saturated in blood in her right hand, and her fully extended left hand was supporting a bowel deposit that she was carrying down the hospital hallway.  Suddenly a nurse swat team zoomed in on the situation and rescued the wandering lady.

Trying to comfort the confused soul, I blocked the way so she couldn’t continue on her wrong path.

Approaching the scene one of the nurses held out her hand and told the lady, “Give that deposit to me.”  She wasn’t wearing gloves or even thought twice about what she had asked the distressed woman to do.

She was given a clean gown and together we escorted her back to her room three doors down from my husband’s.

I was so impressed by what the nurse did and thought how petty my complaints were before the Lord.  Would I be willing to take on that kind of responsibility for life as she did?

Secret Fruit

Later that day the nurse who collected the holdings came into our room and said, “I’m sure glad it was you who saw that woman. She had pulled out her catheter including the ball and was bleeding down the corridor.”  The nurse’s statement was rather strange I thought, especially since I never met her.  It wasn’t until the next day that I found out what she meant.

She had been watching me as I assisted in whatever I could for the past few weeks. By the time my husband was moved to the surgical wing, the staff knew who I was because I seemed to always be there.

When my husband was sleeping I helped with visitors, answered waiting room phones, checked on coffee units, counseled, prayed, gave out smoothie recipes, changed linens or cleaned rooms.  For me I just wanted to stay busy to take my mind off what was happening in my own life.  Rolling up my sleeves and getting dusty knees while mopping floors didn’t seem that significant in lieu of what others were doing before my eyes.

We found out that the nurse was a sister-in-law of a man who was in cardio physical rehab with my husband.  He had told her all about us and that we were Christians.

“But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father (in Heaven) who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:3-4 NKJV)

Our testimony and works had gone before us. How wonderful that God had allowed us to bear fruit for Him while we were in the middle of our own storm, because of seeds previously sown.  What we had done in secret the Lord made public.

Appreciating Your Life

The beginning of May has the world celebrating the appreciation of teachers, nurses, hospitals and mothers along with a few other holidays. Nowhere did I see the celebration of appreciation of your own life.

As the days wear on with me continuing in my husband’s responsibilities, I have come to appreciate what a burden he carries for me as well as others.  When I realize what he does on a daily basis as “the usual” stuff, I am so thankful that I don’t have to do those things and that someone else is gifted or willing to take on tasks that I’m not that good at.  It makes me appreciate my own life and the gifts God has endowed to me even more.

Transfer the Burden

In Galatians 6 we are asked to bear one another’s burdens to fulfill the law of Christ as we go about being generous and doing good deeds for the Lord.  God promises that our deeds won’t go unnoticed and we will be rewarded in due season.  Sowing seeds into the Kingdom of Heaven allows us to reap eternally as well as here on Earth.

There are a lot of jobs that frankly I hope I’ll never have to do, but if I had to I hope that I would be willing to carry them out without grumbling.

Like Moses we may ask, “How can I alone bear your problems, burdens and complaints?” (from Deuteronomy 1:12 NKJV)

Well we can’t, and knowing that not everyone can do every job, the Lord places a desire for certain tasks in our heart to fit us uniquely.  We need to appreciate the skills He has placed in each individual.

God does not call everyone to be mothers/fathers, nurses, teachers or even people who care for pets.  He does however call everyone to carry a burden for someone in need, before handing them over to Him.

“Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJV)

In other words, “Cast your cares (burdens) on the Lord, because He cares about your life and appreciates what you do for Him.”

"Cast your burden(s) on the Lord, and He will sustain you;
He will never permit the righteous to be moved." (Psalm 55:22 NKJV)

Jesus has asked us to make a difference and do something that will count for eternity.  What will He have you do for Him today?

This Week’s Challenge:
The Appreciation Challenge

Learning to appreciate those in our lives sometimes goes less noticed, and that’s why we are going to do something to make a difference in the life of someone else.

Our challenge this week will be to totally take on all responsibilities of someone we live with whether it is an adult or child (except actual jobs in or outside the home), while still doing our own duties.  It’s not a switch-a-roo challenge, but doing it all without complaining task to show the other person how much you appreciate what they contribute to the family.

Maybe you already have the task of being both mother and father to your family and taking on those added responsibilities doesn’t seem challenging.  For you, the challenge will be to take on daily duties of someone else you see every day.

Doing this may seem easy if you only do it for one or two days. Believe me, if you take this appreciation challenge seriously you will be thinking differently by day four.

We want to show the Lord we believe that He will give us the strength, wisdom, knowledge and understanding to bear fruit without wavering when it gets tough.  Rolling up our sleeves and getting a little dust on bended knees is not a burden when we cast them on the Lord, but a blessing from God.

May He grant us favor as we learn to appreciate the life we have been given to live before Him and all mankind.

Until next time, appreciate favor when you see it.

“I favored you with the right gifts that suit you.”
Jesus Christ
