God Made Me Laugh

These past few weeks have been quite difficult for so many of you that the ''pray with ceasing" scripture has been easy to follow.  Through all the troubles, tests and trials has it been hard for you to find anything to smile about let alone laugh?  Believe me, I can relate!  

However, although I can sympathize (and empathize), God's way of doing things somehow always causes me to look at things differently, and yes at times, even makes me laugh! 

"God made me laugh."

In your quiet time have you ever found things you can laugh about with the Lord?  Try it ... it won’t be as difficult as you think, trust me.  

In my Bible study time I found some things that, in my eyes, God must have seen as "humorous" from His perspective.  Maybe not, but I sure did, especially because they connected with me in some way.

Scripture teaches in Genesis 21:6 of a time where God caused Sarah to laugh when He did a miracle in her life.  Sarah had longed to have a child of her own and even though she was up in years, the desire never went away or stopped being part of her dream of being a mother.   Not having children myself, her situation was easy to understand having had simular prayers for a child along my own journey.

Everyone thought it was crazy for her to have a child at age 90, but not God and He gave her the desire of her heart ... it just took a looooooong time!

"And Sarah declared, God has brought me laughter (her son Isaac).  All who hear about this will laugh with me." 

If Jehovah was not laughing at how ridiculous this looked to mankind, surely He had a huge smile on His face.  After all, what would be your reaction to seeing a 90 year old woman carrying her first born?  I know, pretty amazing!  No wonder her tears from trialsome times turned into laugher!

Now God could have given her that child when she was younger, but He didn’t.  Sarah had to trust God at His word and stay in faith during difficult times before she saw her breakthrough miracle.

I imagine there were some "belly" laughs going on don’t you think when the big even finally took place?

Terrible to Terrific

There was another passage (2 Kings 6:1-7) where I can picture all the "boys" gathered when something strange took place.

The story begins with Elisha and the prophets gathered by the Jordan River because it was a larger area for prayer and meetings.  This new location would be perfect, so they assembled with tools in hand to begin cutting down trees to create a log area for sitting.

Suddenly as one man was chopping, his ax head flew off and landed in the water!  I know that situation probably wasn't funny at the time, but the way I envision this happening, it must have been a sight to see the ax head flying off the handle and through the air into the river.

I can picture the men watching and their heads follow the action as the ax head soars up into the air and crashes down into the river sinking with a big splash!  

In desperation the man cutting the tree yelled to Elisha, "Oh Sir, it was a borrowed ax!"  In other words, "Oh no!!! Do something! I will have to pay for that!"

Can you picture this ... Elisha takes a deep breath, then walks over to the man. Ok ... calm down.  

This is what really happened.

Elisha asked, "Where did it fall?"  When the man pointed to the place, Elisha then cut a stick and tossed it into the water at the exact spot the man showed him.

Immediately, the ax head floated to the surface and Elisha shouted, "Grab it."  The man reached out into the water and grabbed the ax head that was borrowed!"

What a relief that man must have felt when the ax was retrieved, and what extraordinary favor in the way it happened!  After the fact and perhaps years down the road, the story of the floating ax head told by this man probably incorporated a bit of laughter.

There is always going to be something that challenges and tests our faith, yet in the midst of those events God provides a way out with unusual opportunities where He shouts - "Here, grab it."  In other words God is saying - trust Me, here is the answer, grab hold of it by faith before it slips away and is gone!  

Laugh at yourself. 

With so much negativity going on in the world and things not working out as planned I know it can be hard to laugh at the simple, so called "dumb" things we do that really don't make that much difference.  We tend to take things to heart a little more than usual, but that is when we need to do exactly the opposite of how we are feeling.  In fact, we need to learn not to take everything so seriously and laugh at ourselves even during difficult times.

A few weeks ago we found ourselves having our own tool mishap.  Our beloved KC kitty was having another asthma attack.  We administed her medicines and tried the inhaler but nothing was working this time.  Hubby did mouth to mouth as I held her, but her tiny body did not respond and she went to Jesus in my arms almost immediately.

Hubby was experiencing pain from kidney stones again and was not up to what he needed to do for our sweet girl. The weather was brutal, cold and snowy with the ground frozen solid.  For days we worked the land trying to dig a final resting place for KC.  Losing daylight I held a flashlight for hubby as he dug and dug to no avail.  

Suddenly the shovel broke and the end flew across the yard.  We watched as it went into the air landing away from the dig site.  Okay, it was dark ... but it went somewhere!

Turning to one another we began laughing ... now what are we going to do? ...oh Elisha ...

No, the situation did not change - it was a sad time with difficult circumstances, but our attitudes did and God worked everything out for our favor including Hubby passing a kidney stone and not needing surgery.

So,what is the point I am trying to make?

The lessons we can learn from Sarah and the prophet's ax head are that God does care about all the details, small or large,  He is aware of our circumstances and in the midst of trouble God is always there with answers, even though they may seem strange, unlikely, impossible or humorous.

If we truly trust God and bring our cares to Him, He may provide or supply our need in surprising unusual ways of favor.  Somewhere in it all there is something that will cause us to smile or laugh; not at the problem, but because God will come through with the solution and it might cause you to break out in laughter!

In the beginning there was unbelief, but in the end  Sarah found laughter and new joy.  The awkward flying ax story changed from a terrible unfortunate accident to a terrific impossible event that turned the prophet's crying into leaps of thankful joy.

The psalmist reminds us of God's promise when he triumphed over his enemies:

"Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones! Praise His Holy name. For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime!  Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." (Psalm 30:4-5 NLT)

I do not know what you may be experiencing at this time, but encourage you not to give up on God - joy is coming!  He holds nothing good back from you and is your hope of favor when faith seems weak.

"For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows (unique) favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless." (Psalm 84:11)

Like the anointed worship leader Don Moen wrote in an amazing song, "God will make a way, when there seems to be no way."

Believe God will do something new that will help you get through whatever it is by granting His unique favor to your situation as He did with Sarah and the perplexed prophet.

He will make a pathway to victory that you did not expect; it will cause joy and laughing to your spirit, soul and body. Then you will proclaim like Sarah, "God made me laugh!"

Stuck on H

For the past few weeks a few things have been stuck in my thinking. 

I thought perhaps the Lord was trying to get something amazing across and lavish me with His favor for spending more time with Him.

It got intense a few days and I just wouldn’t let it go. Thoughts of healing, hope and the heart were subjects I was dwelling on, but through it all God was showing me something I didn’t expect.  He wanted me to lighten up, take a time out and give it a rest!

We get so tied up in the struggles of this world that there doesn’t seem to be a time to find humor in anything.  When that happens, it’s a sign that we haven’t trusted God, and we are casting all our cares on our shoulders instead of His. 

OK Lord, I got the point. 

There’s a remedy for this according to scripture.  Contrary to what some people may have been taught God does have a sense of humor.  I can prove it; take a look at cats!

Been Doing It

Apparently we took a new approach in the way we “do” things without realizing. This may seem a little out of season so I’ll have to explain.  Let’s go back in time to 2009.

We have gone from setting up a 9+ foot tree to a small 4 foot tall Christmas tree ever since we began caring for pets with special needs.  The tree we use now can easily be moved from one area to another and doesn’t have any breakable ornaments on it (no hooks either).

The tree was resting on a small table and placed in another room every time we left the house.  In 2009 the Christmas tree wasn’t displayed until a few days before the holiday.  Not being able to enjoy it for that long, I decided to take it down at the end of January (2010). 

Due to my mom’s home going we were called out of town, and would be gone for several weeks due to a blizzard. (see here)

Being backlogged with work upon our return home, the tree remained in the bedroom on a dresser.  For the next three months we had round the clock care for my diabetic dog, so the tree stayed in place.

During that time I began using it as a nightlight.  I rather liked the soft white twinkle lights.  Most of my writing is at night, so it was nice to be able to see without using a flashlight.  The tree didn’t bother me at all.

It Looks Weird

Here it is four years later and the tree was still on the dresser.  That is until last night.  Zoe is a 3 year old kitty that is undergoing medical attention for about 10 months. 

She got into the bedroom and played demolition on the tree, causing it to flip flop onto a space heater on the floor.

I was working at the time when I heard this crash, but didn’t know what it was.  As I rounded the corner I saw three little contributors (Zoe, Izzy & Yancy) scatter.

When I saw the tree dangling from the cord all I could do was burst into laughter. Summoning my husband to come take a look I asked him to grab the camera on his way into the room.  By the time he got there the accused were nowhere to be found.

I had already decided it was time to take down the tree and actually get a small lamp.  Zoe was helping me keep my commitment or should I say, she helped put my plan into action by rushing things along.  How kind of her!

Last night when I went to bed it just looked weird … all that space.  You can even see the wall now. 

Topsy Turvy

Seeing the tree in its topsy turvy state reminds me of how my life has felt at times when nothing seems to be going right.  Finding the humor in the situation was healing to both my husband and me.

All the tension of the day drained from us and we let the comical side emerge.  Humor ministered to our souls.

 

Caring Less

The Bible says that having a cheerful heart (laughter and a good attitude) does a body good as if it were taking medicine for healing, and indeed it was just that last night.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” (Proverbs 17:22 NLT)

People get so serious that we sap the life out of all that is around us.  By doing this, we go against God because we aren’t acting in faith.

If you’re having a tough time of things right now, look at a cat. They really take the Word of God seriously and could “care less” about what’s going on around them.  To “care less” is to have less care, because they have no fear. Basically that’s the root of scripture isn’t it?

Don’t get caring less confused with carelessness or not caring, and I’m not saying pets aren’t concerned about their owners.  What I am saying is that they don’t care about material things of this world.

Zoe wasn’t a bit interested in the cost of the tree or whether it would damage anything if it fell.  Actually, the only thing that I’ve noticed she values is her relationships and isn’t that what we should value also?

Our inward journey should be concentrating on how our relationship with God stands.  Have you ever talked to God about the funny side of His world?  I’ve often wondered about it, and have spoken to Him with some of my ponderings.

Many people think of God as being this stuffy, bossy Deity that only wants to thrust punishment on those who get out of line.  If we studied the Bible we would realize that’s not how He operates at all.

As a matter of fact, we know He does have a fun side because He has attended a few parties and festivals that have been recorded.  I’ve often wondered if He laughed when He caused the donkey to speak or at some of the names Adam called the animals.

How funny was it that Jesus told His disciple to go get the tax money out of a fish’s mouth?  Can you think of some things that He did that must have freaked people out, from the conversations we read in the Bible?

Does He ever call the angels over and say, “Hey, watch this.” as He does the extraordinary?  In my opinion, He has set the humor radar high when it comes to the life of a cat.

 

I suppose the moral of my lesson is:

"Never put off until tomorrow
what a cat can take care of today."

Laugh with God.

Laugh at yourself. 

Learn not to take everything so seriously.
Yesterday morning is an example of learning to laugh at your own shortcomings.  This was a conversation between my husband and me:

Him: “Lily is on the couch.  It’s her new morning thing.”

Me: “I’m not avoiding you!”

I have no idea what I thought I heard, but obviously it wasn’t what he said.  Our morning began with laughter because it reminded us of what Jeff Allen had said about his wife. (I put the clip below for you.)

It wasn’t about what he said, but about what she thought she heard him say. 

 

Laugh with someone.  

My husband and I laugh a lot. It’s not something we planned along our journey, but just happened. 

For years I’ve told him he missed his calling when it comes to making people laugh.  I tell him there’s no excuse, because I give him so much material!

God doesn’t want us stuck on anything. Frustration, confusion or tension isn’t in His make-up. 

As we’re working through this journey it’s important to realize that we’re not going to learn everything at once.  Our time spent with God will develop day by day, and pressing forth sometimes means stopping to take it all in for a spell.

Instead of watching those old reruns or drama programs, take a week off and focus on the humorous side of life.  If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few clean Christian stand-up comedians that you can watch on You Tube or rent a DVD from your local library.

I’ve selected seven, which is the perfect number of God and gave you the links below for you to watch throughout the week.

If we are to grow closer to the Lord, we need to learn more about our creator.  God is the One who created laughter and our sense of humor, so it stands to reason that He also lets out a chuckle or two doesn’t it?

What are some things that make you laugh?  Why not share them with the Lord?  After all, He’s the One that programmed the mind of a cat.  Now that’s funny in itself.

“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, “the LORD has done great things for them.” (Psalm 126:2 NKJV)

Humor is a gift from the LORD.  Use it for His glory so others may see the great favor and blessings He has done for you.

Flush That Thought

I was standing in line to use the restroom in a local department store.  The store was really busy, because it was a holiday and a lot of people were off work that day.  A few minutes later it was my turn, and I entered the stall.

There was so much activity that the synchronized flushing of the toilets sounded as if they were being led by a conductor bringing the rhythm into harmony.

Leaving the stall a lady brushed by me and said, "It's like a concert."  Trying to be quick witted I sounded off, "Yeah, like Rembrandt" and walked over to the sinks.

Now what I meant to say and what came out were two very different things; one would have been correct and obviously one was "off beat."  Now I could have gone into a long speech with those standing in line that heard me, about how I hadn't slept in over 24 hours, but I didn't.  Instead, I immediately began to laugh.

While washing my hands I glanced into the mirror looking over my shoulder to see what the by-standers were doing.  I expected a remark about my comment and perhaps correction, but no one said anything.  Maybe they were in tune with the music industry and thought I was referring to the not so popular 90's group The Rembrandt.  Somehow I doubted it.

Grabbing hold of the restroom door my laughter started to increase.  My husband was waiting outside the door (like a good hubby) and noticed my sudden burst of joy.  I told him what I said and his comeback was, "You didn't!" With a chuckle ..."Oh, yes I did!" I replied and then we both started laughing.  We laughed so hard we couldn't stop and laughed our way out the door all the way to the car.

It wasn't just the fact that my faux pas was funny, but that no one knew the difference.

How long has it been since you had a really good belly laugh at something you did or said?  We cannot take ourselves so seriously that we fail to see human error in things or ignore when life just gets "stupid" funny.

The Bible tells us that a merry heart (including laughter) is good for us and acts like medicine or an element for healing.  So take a bit of your own medicine and go make someone laugh.  It will do you both good.

Dealing with Life's Distractions: Part 4

Three Things that Make It All Work: 

Wisdom, Discernment

and Favor

My husband and I have learned that there are certain things that mesh everything you want to achieve together. We ask God for wisdom, discernment, and favor in each goal making decision and we take this seriously.  

Everyone deals with the things I've discussed in this series including various errands and all it takes to keep a household going and we are no different in encountering these challenges.  Asking God to grant you wisdom, discernment and favor is key in not giving up on a dream, goal or vision when you feel like nothing is going right.  Using these tools from the Lord will help you reach any goal in life, despite all the distractions that sometimes take you off course. 

What I am about to share may not seem to be vision related, however, it does help us achieve what is important at any given moment, which includes living a goal-oriented life.

There are three things (specifically) that help us get through each day and difficult situations no matter how rushed, stressed or calm it is.  Each day we Laugh, Sing, and Pray together. 

I could not be more serious about this!  These three things have been the staple of our ongoing close relationship since before we were married.   When other things do not fall in place, these things keep you grounded and bring you back in focus.

LAUGH - We value each moment together and laugh a lot, I mean a real lot, especially if hubby is messing up on his speech in trying to find the correct word or phrase to say.  The brain bleeds affected his speaking abilities, and we work on this in his daily cognitive training.  

He knows what he wants to say, but as the day goes on his trying to say the right thing does not always come out the way it should if he is tired.  He automatically recognizes the mistake. In the past he would get angry or stressed out, which made it harder to say what he meant.  

Through training he has learned to slow down and ask the Holy Spirit to help him remember what he wants to say.  Sometimes it comes out quite funny.  Now he laughs and keeps trying rather than responding negatively or feeling defeated.

SING - Another thing we do is sing, mostly me ... all throughout the day!  I sing to God, to hubby, the pets, my plants, our stuff ... you name it, it has probably been sung to at some point!  I even sing to the cats when delivering their meals; it changes with the menu of course.

"I have some meat, meat, meat, for you to eat, eat, eat.  

It is some fish, fish, fish on the dish, dish, dish ..."  (There is more but I will spare you the rest.)

Singing happy, funny, or joyful songs literally changes how you feel instantly and it is actually biblical in maintaining joy, especially in trying times.  It may seem silly, but it makes me happy and cancels out any stress I have. Plus, the pets seem to like it.  I will save the songs about the cows and turkeys for their enjoyment.

PRAY - In no way am I disheartened that I "must do extra" work; I believe God's favor is on our lives and each day I see a walking miracle in my husband.  I am so blessed and prayer has been (and is) a main source of this entire process enabling me to see the blessings of God on our lives.

Praying together is something we have always done, but now it is different due to what has happened in our lives.  Each night we pray together and my husband prays over me in description: my face from eyes, mouth, teeth, ears, skin, breathing, hands, fingers, legs - you get the point.  He prays over specific points because he remembers certain issues that I have dealth with over the years like Bell's Palsy, skin cancer or trigger fingers.  

This may seem strange to some, but it stimulates the brain and helps his memory recover events.  He just started doing this on his own and when he forgets something he says, "Holy Spirit help me remember" and God does.  Part of my husband's goal (vision) is to do public speaking again, and memory is a part of gaining confidence that he will.  

There is no exact science as in how the brain heals, but we know that one of God's way is praying for others so that you may be healed.  If you are in need of healing, start praying for healing in someone else.

When hubby first started praying like this it was kind of funny and somewhat childlike, but as he continued day-after-day, I became more thankful that someone would even pray for me like that.

Distractions, rabbit trails or side roads to your vision are going to happen, there is no way of avoiding them. How they are handled will determine if you get through them or give in to them.  Learning not to be hard-hearted or stiff-necked about them will help you see things in a different light.  Asking the Lord to give you a discerning spirit will change the way you deal with each situation.

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed (changed) by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12: 2 ESV)

When I get distracted, overloaded or tired at times, I am not burdened.  Instead I am extremely grateful to care for this man who has the love of God in his heart and loves me unconditionally, even if he gets my birthday confused with an anniversary or other holiday.  This is hard to do since I start reminding him every day a month in advance, but somehow, he did! 

No worries, I reminded him and he got a gift and two cards!  Granted, one was for our anniversary because he did not know what we were celebrating but this way he already has it.  I just need to find where he put it and remind him where it is when the time comes.

Do Not Be Discouraged

What does any of this mean in following my vision, dreams, or goals?  Should I scrap the goal and pull back on the vision God put in my heart when the distractions lead me away from it all?  Absolutely not, in fact, push harder!  

The enemy will try to use anything and everything he can to keep you from seeing your dreams manifested, and life's distractions are one way he uses to do that.   Scripture tells us how to handle these situations.  We are to live by faith trusting God to work everything out for our good and not give up, quit or run away in fear when things are not going as planned.

"Now the Righteous (those who trust in the Lord) will live by faith, but it he draws back (shrinks back due to fear or somethinge else), My soul has no pleasure in him." (from Hebrews 10:38)

No matter what may be distracting us from moving forward, we have to understanding these things happen.  By faith in prayer we are to expect that the "reality" of a situation will change into something good like God said it would in His plan.  

These (situations I am referring to as) distractions do not come as a surprise to God, but are lessons to learn from in reaching each goal. Do not be discouraged, but encourage yourself in the Lord.  (Read1 Samuel 30:6)

Always be mindful that God's plans for you are good, so if they are not at the time, it is temporary!  If what you see in the natural does not line up with what you have in your vision or goal, you have not finished yet - keep going!

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you (they are plans for good and not evil), plans to give you a hope and a future.  

Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you." (Jeremiah 29:11-12 NIV)

My friend, God already knew all the life distractions you would encounter before you were born.  They do not change the good plans He has for your life, so do not quit dreaming or going after your life vision even if you are not where you want to be at the time. 

Instead, allow those distractions (set backs or delays) to teach you.  Learn and grow from their life lessons, then re-visit your vision goals. You will be surprised that you are right where God wanted you to be!

Stay true to your vision and never, never, never give up no matter how many distractions there are or how long it takes.  Though it may take a while, it will surely come if you do not faint, give in or quit.  It is a promise of God!

"Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he (everyone who passes by) may be able to read it easily at a quick glance.

For the vision (dream in your heart) is yet for an appointed time (it will happen at the right time); but at the end it will speak (manifest), and it will not lie.  Though it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come (take place).  It will not tarry (be late but perfect in God's time)." from Habakkuk 2:2
