She Called it “Visitation”

I don’t know why, but I seemed to be the one that my mother took with her on long outings, or as Baptist’s would say “visitation”.

You remember those don’t you? Places your parents would drag you to while you waited in the car for an hour or more believing that she would be right out like she said.   How would she possibly know the time without a watch … and who are these people she’s visiting anyway?

Maybe you can relate to some of this when you were a kid with desires of spending afternoons doing something else – anything else?  Imaging days on end in these situations with the only visits you have in mind are those of people your own age dropping by unannounced asking if you were free to go with them to a mall or fast-food place.  Those days never happened, at least not in my world.

Put your imagination cap on and picture all the times you sat alone quietly in someone’s living room so you wouldn’t overhear the grown up’s conversation that was going on in the kitchen?  You know you heard every word, but never confessed it to Mom.

Then there's that "older couple" she visited where you balanced a cup of tea on your lap while holding a piece of cake on a napkin in your other hand. You listened as the gentleman played the piano, while his wife proudly showed off photographs of her family from the last 50 years.

After several visits you’ve learned the technique of balancing food and plates successfully, and even offer to serve or retrieve something from the kitchen to escape the reappearance of the family albums.  What else was there to do … you already used the rest room twice!

When my husband and I were discussing this, the only rational reason I could come up with as to why I was a favored tag-a-long with Mom is because of my split sessions schedule in high school.  Besides there wasn't anyone else available in the afternoons for visiting the sick, elderly, lonely, depressed or widower on those weekly outings as she shared the gospel message of Christ.

As time went by, I didn't seem to mind those afternoon visits and began wondering who was on the list for that week.  Unbeknownst to me, it was like I was in prep school resigned to learn what would become my future counseling careen and ministry.

I can remember time after time when I’d get home from school and enter the house with the most glorious smells of her cooking.  Sometimes Mom would make her fabulous roast with all the trimmings, and then we would take it to someone else while we ate fish sticks for dinner that night. What was that all about?  Those meal lessons would become a staple in my own home years later, when I learned what feeding the hungry and ministering to the hurting really meant.

Over the course of my teen years, I had many adventures with mother.  Some weren’t always to places I really wanted to go and I’d object in my own sort of way, to no avail.   In the end, with my attitude in check, off we’d go to yet another thing I didn’t quite understand.

Protesting in Washington D.C. against abortion was one of those things. What did I know about it then? Thinking back on all the events over the years, I would love to go on those outings one more time with a new outlook of the many, many hours spent with her, and this time soak in all that she was demonstrating as a child of God.

Everyplace Mother visited she made friends, good friends.  Little did I realize that every time I went with Mom, she was planting seeds of compassion, love, mercy and favor into everyone she encountered, while demonstrating what it meant to be called the “Righteousness of God through Christ Jesus.”

“She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.”
Proverbs 31:26 NKJV

If my mother were here right now, she would invite you over for coffee or tea, pastries and good fellowship sitting around the kitchen table. When the time came to an end, walking to the entrance Mom would compel you to return, leaving the door open for you to accept her salvation invitation to receive Christ as Savior and come back for a visit soon.

I’d like to do as she taught me … will you go on what she called a “visitation” mission to share the message of salvation through Jesus Christ?  You don’t even have to leave your house, but invite someone to this site where they can learn about the favor of God through becoming a child of God’s.

"Remember me, O Lord, with the favor You have toward Your people.
Oh visit me with Your salvation. (Psalm 106:4 NKJV)

Let me leave you with this word of wisdom as encouragement.  The next time your mother or any older woman of God for that matter, decides that she wants you to tag-a-long on her little "visitations" for the Lord ... just smile and say yes!  Be glad she chose you to favor for the outing, because there will come a time when you'll miss being asked!

Happy Mother's (and Woman's) Day Ladies!  With love we honor you!

Until next time, I pray God visits you with His glorious salvation favor.

The Road to Troas

Take the boxing gloves off and pick yourself up off the floor.  No need to keep beating yourself up over what did or didn’t happen last year.

I know, I know … this is something we never want to ask ourselves, but always do.  So, let me be the one who does the questioning to ease the pain of guilt or regret.

In review over your vision or goal list for last year, if you looked into your rearview mirror, did you accomplish all of them?  Half … some … even one? (Wait … don’t pick up the guilt gloves!)

Did you discover God’s plan didn’t quite match yours and your expectations hit the wall?  To tell the truth, that’s where I was, and in time spent with the Lord, He let me know exactly where I missed it.

Thanks for joining us on Daily Favor Blog.

When Go Turns to No

After time in biblical study I discovered plenty of people have walked that path of disappointment before me.  Do you know who else found himself in that situation?  The Apostle Paul, that’s right.  The Bible tells us what happened in the book of Acts.

He had planned his 2nd mission trip with Timothy who was joining him for training, when all of a sudden God put a hold on it.   The evangelic journey was scheduled through Asia as he headed for Bithynia.  Instead, God stopped him with no rhyme or reason Paul thought.

Every detail was set and prayed through with no doubts in the process.  He and Timothy were prepared; people were expecting them.  It just didn’t make sense that in an instant the “go ye” plan turned to a “no ye” one.  So then, Lord, what’s the problem?

For Future Generations of Favor

Has God ever said “no” to you by closing every door that was opened and you couldn’t figure out why?  Scripture reminds us that although we may make our plans, our steps are directed by the Lord.

“A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.”
(Proverbs 16:9)

This is what seemed to be happening to Paul, that is except for something strange.  All opportunities closed but one … to Troas, which wasn’t even part of the plan.

Troas Lord?  Why Troas and not Bithynia?  There was no way Paul could have known what the future would hold, but God knows the end from the beginning.  He was placing people in position for future generations of favor and blessings on a larger scale that Paul couldn’t have imagined.

At the time it didn’t make sense, but Paul had to obey and Timothy watched this all play out for good and God’s glory.  His plan is far better than ours and the Apostle wasn’t about to fight with the Lord’s change in direction.

The Voice in the Night

The two cities were very different from one another (Bithynia and Troas that is), not only in culture and language but geographically it would make a big difference.  (Take a look at the above map.)  This was new to them and not where they thought they would be according to the schedule.

There have been many times when I became frustrated because some of my plans and goals have taken so long.  That's when the boxing gloves of guilt and regret emerge.

Over and over as I start questioning every step I’ve taken, wondering if I’ve had it wrong the entire time.  Like Paul, it is during those quiet times in the night when the Lord speaks clearly to our spirit.  If we are listening attentively, we will hear the Holy Spirit's voice speak to our spirit, giving direction and know this is His will over what we had previously planned or desired.

During the night in Troas, not the city of Bithynia, Paul had a vision of ministering to a man begging for help in Macedonia, Greece … a totally different place and continent!  He was anxious to get to the first destination, but God took him on a different path first … steps that would alter the course of history!

“So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas, and a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying: Come over to Macedonia and help us.

Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to
go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us
to preach the gospel to them.” (Acts 16:8-10)

Paul didn’t waste time, but hopped on board a ship from Troas ports and traveled to Neapolis (now Kavala), which is a major eastern seaport in Macedonia.  He had to be where God was going to give him favor from the “future generations who would become” Saints.

Troas was where God launched Paul’s ministry of “go ye” and how the gospel was spread not only in Greece, but throughout all Europe.

There’s A Better Door

Although Paul’s mindset was Asia, God’s was for all of Europe and mankind.  Troas would be the doorway for the gospel and Christianity to be preached among Muslim nations.  It didn’t stop there either!

Eventually settlers would break free from other nations and travel to Plymouth Rock, yes to America where freedom of religion is practiced and enjoyed liberally!  That is … at this moment, but for how long will this door remain open to this blessing?

I can write and post this because of the grace and favor of God that began thousands of years ago, without traveling across an ocean or body of water like Paul did originally!  You are reading this because of that same grace!

What if Paul didn’t obey God and stayed in Asia, would I have ever learned about Christ’s saving grace or experience His favor daily?  How would I be able to proclaim or teach what I had not known in my own life?  Oh, but thankfully Paul did take that step of faith to journey with Jesus!

There is a bigger plan for all mankind and history, not just what is in front of you or me.  God is doing a different thing, He’s making it plain, 20/20 clarity for His vision.  Can you not see it?  It’s time to forget past failures and the unexplained closed roads.

“The LORD said, forget what happened long ago!
Don’t think about the past.  I am creating something new.
There it is!  Do you see it?  I have put roads in deserts,
streams in thirsty lands.” (Isaiah 43:18-19 CEV)

He Will Lead Us On

If we read stories throughout history it’s easy to understand why God changed events to fit His overall plan for salvation.  We read how people had their heart set on something, but God sent them down a different path changing direction of their destiny.

Someone once described it like this …

“God leads down a path we do not know
Upward He leads though our steps be slow
Though often we faint and falter on the way
Though storms and darkness obscure the day
Yet when the clouds are gone
We know that He leads us on.”
-Author Unknown

Maybe you’re frustrated over the past and even say, “This is not what I planned; I expected so much more and to be farther along in my goals.”

You may be confused about what God is doing, but He isn’t.  When God stops or blocks your plans, it’s because the favor and blessings He has for you are not where you think or expect.

If you recall, God didn’t reveal to Paul His plans until he arrived in Troas.  It wasn’t until Paul obeyed the first step that the Lord revealed another part or phase of the vision.

God is more interested in your obedience than you trying to figure things out on your own.  There is no way we can know how big the blessing is, we just have to trust Him in the journey.

Go with God’s plan, stop fighting, scratching and clawing against what He is telling you to do.  When we submit our plans to God, He will change them into something more than we could ask or think.

“Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this.  He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination!
He will outdo them all, for His miraculous power constantly
energizes you.”  (Ephesians 3:20 TPT)

Have You Settled in Bithynia?

We’ve all missed a turn or two down the road of life, but the journey still continued didn’t it?  Somehow, we got back on track and saw where we went wrong.

God showed me things I needed to take hold of and what to let go from the past if He was to bless the work of my hands.  He’s not closing doors to stop us from moving forward, but leading us to our own Troas, a place where there are open doors for greater favor, opportunities and blessings.

I’m going to keep asking the hard questions … Where is your vision?  How far along are you in where you want to be?  Have you set the path with God’s permission or is it one you want to travel alone?

There’s a better way if you let God lead you in the direction to take.  The path leads to joy in His Daily Favor and Eternal Presence!

“You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy;
at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

This Week's Challenge:
What is your Bithynia & where is it leading you?
See, friends, we all have a Bithynia of sorts in our lives - a place and goal in mind, but they don’t always match God’s.  Spend time with the Lord and ask Him to reveal to you exactly where you missed it or what needs changing.  Don’t be discouraged if or when God changes your plans … it’s going to be okay!

Let me ask you again … What and where is your Bithynia?  Have you settled there, or are you willing to go on to the “Troas” God sets so His favor and plans can be established through you?  Who knows, it may be a road trip to Greece or even Paris, France, but if not it's still going to be the ride of your life!

Even though things aren’t exactly what I hoped for yet or where I planned to be at this point of my life, this is my prayer … it can be yours as well.

“Lord, I’m going to trust You and Your plans.  Somehow, someway I know what You have in mind is much better.  I submit to Your plan and timing, no matter how long it takes.  I choose to enjoy the journey and watch the goodness of the Lord unfold in my life.”

Whatever your goal or vision is, be prepared!  Never forget that if you are willing and obedient, God will always direct you to His path of favor… your road to “Troas”, the unexpected destination that is better than you can ever imagine.

For the Lord God is a sun and a safe-covering (shield).
The Lord gives favor and honor.  He holds back nothing good from
those who walk in the way that is right.  O Lord of all,
how happy is the man (person) who trusts in You!”
(Psalm 84:11-12 NLV emphasis mine)

No Time for Christmas

Have you ever had a “Paul like” moment?

Well, maybe it’s not exactly one like he spoke of in Romans 7 where he continued to do things he didn’t want to do, but it sort of went against my character of not putting myself into certain situations if I can help it.

For example, the very thing I don’t like to do I found myself doing … grocery shopping on a Saturday morning!  Contrary to what I wanted, we had to make the trek and changed our plans.  Bundling in layers of clothing we cranked up the car heater and headed off to the store.

It was bitter cold out so my husband insisted on dropping me off at the door in front of the store before circling around to find parking.  We agreed that I would sit on a bench near the restrooms and wait for him.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Serpentining through the crowd I walked toward the bench, and for reasons which only God knows, I started talking out loud.

“Wow, why is it so packed here?  The place is so busy!”

A worker who happened to be walking by answered, “It’s the third … social security checks were issued.”  Not expecting anyone to actually respond I said, “Oh.”

Locating the bench near the rest rooms, I was surprised that no one was sitting on it, especially due to the amount of people in the store.  I settled in and took a quick look in all directions to see what was happening.

“Ooops … that can’t be good.”  This time I was only thinking it as the store went dark losing power three times!  Suppose it was from all the money they were making at the checkouts that the computers couldn’t keep up with it?  I guess we’ll never know.  We did see several armored vans and police cars out front … hmm.

Shutting Out Christmas

To my right was a small rectangular table with a stack of forms and a laptop computer.  A well-dressed woman from the Medicare office (an insurance company selling supplement policies) was situated behind it in anticipation of a prospective new client.

Shortly after a middle-aged lady looking disheveled and weary, approached her area with a few questions confessing that she was almost in tears when Facebook shut down for several hours.  Her life was getting too complicated and insurance was the last thing she wanted to discuss.

The agent and the customer struck up a conversation based on the fact that they were both 57 years old and had husbands that needed surgery. Neither of them looked their age; one looked younger the other much older.  You can probably guess which was which.

Not that I was eavesdropping, but it was impossible not to hear the conversation with sitting only a few feet away from the impromptu station. Turning my body sideways away from them, I kept looking around the room so it didn’t appear I was tuned in to what was being said.  Frankly I doubt the customer even noticed anyone else, because of her one-on-one attentive audience.

Back and forth the two ladies debated about the insurance policies and their families.  However, the saleswoman couldn't get a word in edgewise that her husband needed his arm “rebuilt” and she never got to explain what that meant either. Every time the Medicare agent’s mouth opened the woman standing went into a tailspin over her home life situation turning the conversation back to her.

Patiently the insurance lady sat there and let the woman spill everything that was on her mind about her family.  Her point was made clear … she had basically shut out Christmas and everything else.

No Time for Christmas

Her voice heightened, repeating the conversation she told her grown children earlier that day.

“There will be no holiday, because I don’t have the time.

Come get your gifts and leave because I can't take care
you and your father. I don’t have time to do Christmas.”

Oh my … the turmoil that she must be dealing with in making decisions and trying to please everyone.  Unlike Christians, “Christmas” as the world knows it isn’t a time of comfort and joy, or peace that the angels proclaimed with the birth of the Savior Jesus despite the complications in life.  At least it wasn’t for her family this year.

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
good will toward men!” (Luke 2:14 KNV)

Had she ever experienced Emmanuel – God with her?  On the other hand, if she was a child of God had she forgotten that CHRISTmas is with her ALL the time?  Through Him she would have the strength needed, regardless of whatever day it was?

"Christ is the One who gives me the strength I need to do whatever
I must do." (Philippians 4:13 ERV)

This Too Shall Pass

Listening to their conversation I was humbled by the favor of God on my life and the peace I receive knowing that His grace and mercy encompasses me.  For the past month (November) it has been a revolving door between the hospital and doctor's offices for my husband.  Literally we had only four days unscheduled on the calendar which contributed to not being able to post as usual.

My husband was placed on a list for emergency surgery and we were preparing for it.  On Tuesday, November 27th he was in so much pain that he couldn't do anything.

All the signs pointed toward more kidney stones, but after tests the urologist couldn't find anything on the x-rays and felt it vital for hubby to have a CT-scan and undergo immediate surgery. The doctor explained that some of his medications can affect other organs so he needed answers that only an operation could provide.

This meant getting off heart medicine for a short time which wasn't the issue, giving those nasty three-foot long (not really but he says they feel like it) Lovenox self-injections were. Not only are they extremely painful but super expensive as well. Insurance only covers a fraction of the cost and he would need six of them.

If the doctor got in there and saw nothing it would all be a waste of money, but even more it would be putting my husband at an unnecessary risk. The whole thing was unsettling in my spirit and I felt that rushing this was all getting ahead of God.  Instead, we prayed.  We prayed fervently!

God heard our prayers!  Wednesday, the following day, hubby passed three kidney stones with absolutely no pain! People had been praying for his health and over our medical expenses (finances). I would tell you the story about the stones but he won't let me. It's absolutely hilarious!

Waiting for A Good Report

With the situation now changing, neither of us felt right in our spirits about the surgery even though the doctor still wanted to go through with it based on hubby's past history.  Our next appointment would reveal the deciding factor. Now we had to wait over the weekend.

Monday morning after having the CT scan done at the hospital, we met with the urologist surgeon - or should I say his Nurse Practitioner. All the tests came back with "good reports" so the surgeon canceled the operation passing the case on to his co-worker who said with a smile, "See you in six months!"

While listening to the ladies in the grocery store battle over their husbands it made me sad and happy at the same time.  I wanted each of them to hear good reports as well, but sensed that they weren’t counting on it.

I was so happy to have heard a good report for my husband, but sad that neither of them made room for "Christ-mas" to work in their lives. The events, circumstances, situations and issues of life caused them to shut out Christmas, the very thing they needed to help get through it all. Did they even know that “Christ”-mas favor was available to them for the asking?

Angels Declare Peace

Earlier we looked at a verse in Luke 2 from the King James translation.  I’d like for us to re-examine that passage to help us understand why favor is a part of Christmas that shouldn’t be shut out of the celebration.

If we read Luke 2:14 from the Amplified translation, which is claimed to be the closest to literal Hebrew or Greek, we can see that there is a greater promise to those who choose to believe that Jesus is God’s Son.

“Glory to God in the highest [Heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor]. (Luke 2:14 AMPC)

When the angels made this declaration, they weren’t referring to physical peace on earth between the race of man, but rather a spiritual peace.  The peace they were declaring was that through Jesus, salvation had come to earth for those who believe in the Son of God.  Only through Him would there be peace between God and mankind.

“For Christ Himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in His own body on the cross, He broke down the wall of hostility that separated us.

He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating
in Himself one new people from the two groups."
(Ephesians 2:14-15 NLT)

Good will, eudokia in Greek (pronounced yoo-dok-ee’-ah) means God’s good pleasure.  It is His good pleasure to give favor because of His delight, happiness in the relationship He has with man/woman.

The birth of Jesus brought happiness to God because through His Son redemption was being satisfied so mankind could be reconciled back to Him.  Can you imagine this?  How do you feel when your family relationships are thriving and in right standing?  Good … right?

As His children are redeemed back into His Kingdom through salvation, peace is restored between God and His creation in whom He gives free favor, grace from and over sin and death.

“And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten Son receives from His father, full of grace
(favor, loving-kindness) and truth.”
 (John 1:14 AMPC)

Christmas Favor is on Earth

What the angels were proclaiming was essentially Christmas Favor has come to earth in flesh form through Jesus, the Christ the Anointed child.  When Jesus was born, the fullness of grace (favor, truth and love) became fixed in our lives as it was from the beginning of Creation.

“Glory to God in the highest [Heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor]. (Luke 2:14 AMPC)

Good will favor from God requires something to be done by faith alone in The Messiah.  God’s good pleasure or good will isn’t available to an unbeliever, so peace will never be a part of their lives.  It can’t be because Jesus is the Prince of Peace and without Him there will never be peace with God.

For us to not make time for Christmas based on circumstances (no matter what they are) is really removing peace, favor and mercy from our lives.

All Our Troubles

Preparing for any holiday can be taxing on emotions, with making sure everything falls into place.  Friends, I know it can be difficult, even seem impossible, but the last thing we need to do is cross Christmas (the real reason for celebrating) off our to-do lists.

Understanding that finding favor from the Lord is something we need daily and is important if our prayers are to be answered. My husband and I didn't start praying when his pain began, but fellowship with the Lord daily.  We make time for Christ-mas (Christ the Messiah who saves, heals and delivers) each day through joint prayer, biblical study and worship.

When believers include Christ in their lives, God equips them with what is needed for the time at hand.  It may not be easy, but He is always there to help us as we go through the “storms” that come with living.

The Bible tells us that when a believer cries out to the Lord, He hears us and delivers us from all our troubles (Psalm 34:4-5). When my Pastor quotes that verse, he poses it like this:

          Pastor: How many?
          Congregation: All.
          Pastor: Some?
          Congregation: All.
          Pastor: A few.
          Congregation: All.
          Pastor: All our troubles.

Our Christmas Challenge:
Make Time for Christmas

There’s no denying that we love all the holiday lights, musicdecorations, and home coming celebrations that add to our joy of the season.   Yet as the events and festivities rush through our day, don’t forget to make time for the Who in Christmas – Jesus.

Those ladies in the store found it easy to share their burdens with one another, but found no real peace, comfort or answers when their conversation ended.  They weren’t looking for a Savior that was born in Bethlehem, but their hope was in doctors or something else.

What are you facing right now? Instead of shutting out Christ making no time for Christmas, call out to Him.

The Deliverer has already come and conquered any problem you will ever face.  When things start to get busy, stop and remember you are surrounded by God's grace, mercy and favor. As His child these blessings are with you all year round not only at Christmas, but because of Christmas!

God sent a Messiah, His name is Christ-mas (Christ the Anointed Messiah - He redeems, saves) to deliver us from the works of the enemy.  It is His good pleasure that you live in peace, joy and love through the gift of grace and favor.

“Glory to God in the highest [Heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor]. (Luke 2:14 AMPC)
