The Faith Pawn

I have been listening ...  I have also been watching some strange behavior ... that of unbelief, fear, uncertainty and doubt.   Not all of it was from strangers, no indeed.  In fact, it was me.

This week we faced some challenges and as I prepared for them, my stomach felt like it was being shaken and tossed to and fro.  Sure I kept repeating the Word of God over and over outloud and silently, but as we arrived at our destination feelings of doubt and questioning keep resurfacing. 

The individuals standing before me knew the testimony I proclaimed, but was what I feared being clearly displayed in my behavior despite the continual casting down of all imaginations?  Were my actions compromising my confession?

I remembered what I heard evangelist Joyce Meyer say in my early morning faith building teaching session, right before I walked out the door that day.

"It's how we act while we are in trouble that's important.  There's no greater witness than stability; to be the same all the time. That's the greatest witness you can be to a family that's not serving God (or any unbeliever for that matter).  Be happy, be peaceful, be stable. Treat them good."

As we waited for a doctor's report I heard in my spirit "Keep your eyes on Me."  I closed my eyes and it was as if the hand of God reached out and gently turned my head so it faced Him.  Looking in my eyes, in my spirit I heard Him softly say, "Believe Me."

Immediately, the peace that He gave me at the time of salvation rose up within and I was calmed, remained stable, immovable and unshaken.   My thoughts had not been given a voice; only the Word remained and came out of my mouth.  God heard my cries out to Him and was faithful to His Word!

It Is Your Move

Perhaps you can relate to my experience in the challenge in overcoming feelings of fear with faith.  Do not be discouraged.  

The challenges you may face and decisions you have to make are extemely difficult at times and sometimes you may feel your faith is struggling, but do not give in to those emotions by giving them a voice.   Life and death are in the power of the tongue. You determine the outcome by what comes out of your mouth, so speak what you want not what you feel! (Proverbs 18:21 NLT)

This is life, your life, and the devil knows it is not a game, but he will still try to play you!

Where is this coming from and who is directing your life as if your were a game piece to be shuffled all around in directions you did not want to go?

I want to remind you that it does not have to be that way, and this is why.

When it comes to winning in the "game of life" as some people say (over the obstacles that are thrown along our path), you have the upper hand on strategy if you are a believer in Christ Jesus.  

Being crowned with the Righteousness of God is the only "pawn" we need.  Your faith is the "game piece" (pawn).  It has the power to move mountains and move you in position for the favor of God to manifest in your life (at any place, any time, through any situation) if you let it and stay in belief.

Having both knowledge and wisdom found in the scriptures, faith is the most precious game piece you have and you control how it is used - for belief or unbelief.  It is your move!  The devil knows that, do you? 

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!  (Romans 11:33 NKJV)

If you are still struggling and battling over any challenges that have come, be reminded how God declared that the victory is already yours. That means you are an overcomer and have already won no matter what things look like.  Now take your stand and act like the victor you are through Christ Jesus. 

Lots of life "obstacles" were thrown our way, but through our challenges we smiled, laughed and did not let it get us down.  We are patiently believing God for a good outcome or report over every circumstance.

What is happening in your life that is throwing your game out of whack?  No matter what you are experiencing, God’s grace and mercy will see you through if you remain steadfast in your belief that He is faithful to do His Word.  He will grant abundant, unmerited favor on your life and care for you, giving renewed hope to your spirit and situation. 

"You have granted me life and favor,

and Your care has preserved my spirit."

(Job 10:12 NKJV)  

Never forget your faith is not a pawn piece for the devil to move about at will.  Jesus has defeated the enemy and declared the "game of the wicked" over, proclaiming victory for the children of God.

Remain steadfast in the Word of God, trusting He will work all things out for your good.  Do not let your faith waver on God by giving into fear; remain assured in His promises and be unshaken. Stand your ground by faith and declare I will not be moved!

"If I say, my foot slips, Your  mercy (constant, steadfast unfailing love, faithfulness and favor), O LORD, will hold me up.  In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul." (Psalm 94:18-19 NKJV)

When troubles try to overtake you, proclaim these verses believing the power of God is present and watch His Daily Favor be manifested in your situation!

"I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved." (Psalm 16:8 NKJV)

"He only is my rock and my salvation;

He is my defense I shall not be moved (shaken).  (Psalm 62:6 KJV)

"Cast your burden on the LORD,

and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the Righteous to be moved."

(verse  22, but read all of Psalm 55)

"He will not allow your foot to (slip) be moved." (verse 3, but read all of Psalm 121)

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, firm, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."  (1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV)

Lord grant me wisdom throughout the day,

and through the trials I will pray,

Your perfect will, in Your perfect way.

God Made Me Laugh

These past few weeks have been quite difficult for so many of you that the ''pray with ceasing" scripture has been easy to follow.  Through all the troubles, tests and trials has it been hard for you to find anything to smile about let alone laugh?  Believe me, I can relate!  

However, although I can sympathize (and empathize), God's way of doing things somehow always causes me to look at things differently, and yes at times, even makes me laugh! 

"God made me laugh."

In your quiet time have you ever found things you can laugh about with the Lord?  Try it ... it won’t be as difficult as you think, trust me.  

In my Bible study time I found some things that, in my eyes, God must have seen as "humorous" from His perspective.  Maybe not, but I sure did, especially because they connected with me in some way.

Scripture teaches in Genesis 21:6 of a time where God caused Sarah to laugh when He did a miracle in her life.  Sarah had longed to have a child of her own and even though she was up in years, the desire never went away or stopped being part of her dream of being a mother.   Not having children myself, her situation was easy to understand having had simular prayers for a child along my own journey.

Everyone thought it was crazy for her to have a child at age 90, but not God and He gave her the desire of her heart ... it just took a looooooong time!

"And Sarah declared, God has brought me laughter (her son Isaac).  All who hear about this will laugh with me." 

If Jehovah was not laughing at how ridiculous this looked to mankind, surely He had a huge smile on His face.  After all, what would be your reaction to seeing a 90 year old woman carrying her first born?  I know, pretty amazing!  No wonder her tears from trialsome times turned into laugher!

Now God could have given her that child when she was younger, but He didn’t.  Sarah had to trust God at His word and stay in faith during difficult times before she saw her breakthrough miracle.

I imagine there were some "belly" laughs going on don’t you think when the big even finally took place?

Terrible to Terrific

There was another passage (2 Kings 6:1-7) where I can picture all the "boys" gathered when something strange took place.

The story begins with Elisha and the prophets gathered by the Jordan River because it was a larger area for prayer and meetings.  This new location would be perfect, so they assembled with tools in hand to begin cutting down trees to create a log area for sitting.

Suddenly as one man was chopping, his ax head flew off and landed in the water!  I know that situation probably wasn't funny at the time, but the way I envision this happening, it must have been a sight to see the ax head flying off the handle and through the air into the river.

I can picture the men watching and their heads follow the action as the ax head soars up into the air and crashes down into the river sinking with a big splash!  

In desperation the man cutting the tree yelled to Elisha, "Oh Sir, it was a borrowed ax!"  In other words, "Oh no!!! Do something! I will have to pay for that!"

Can you picture this ... Elisha takes a deep breath, then walks over to the man. Ok ... calm down.  

This is what really happened.

Elisha asked, "Where did it fall?"  When the man pointed to the place, Elisha then cut a stick and tossed it into the water at the exact spot the man showed him.

Immediately, the ax head floated to the surface and Elisha shouted, "Grab it."  The man reached out into the water and grabbed the ax head that was borrowed!"

What a relief that man must have felt when the ax was retrieved, and what extraordinary favor in the way it happened!  After the fact and perhaps years down the road, the story of the floating ax head told by this man probably incorporated a bit of laughter.

There is always going to be something that challenges and tests our faith, yet in the midst of those events God provides a way out with unusual opportunities where He shouts - "Here, grab it."  In other words God is saying - trust Me, here is the answer, grab hold of it by faith before it slips away and is gone!  

Laugh at yourself. 

With so much negativity going on in the world and things not working out as planned I know it can be hard to laugh at the simple, so called "dumb" things we do that really don't make that much difference.  We tend to take things to heart a little more than usual, but that is when we need to do exactly the opposite of how we are feeling.  In fact, we need to learn not to take everything so seriously and laugh at ourselves even during difficult times.

A few weeks ago we found ourselves having our own tool mishap.  Our beloved KC kitty was having another asthma attack.  We administed her medicines and tried the inhaler but nothing was working this time.  Hubby did mouth to mouth as I held her, but her tiny body did not respond and she went to Jesus in my arms almost immediately.

Hubby was experiencing pain from kidney stones again and was not up to what he needed to do for our sweet girl. The weather was brutal, cold and snowy with the ground frozen solid.  For days we worked the land trying to dig a final resting place for KC.  Losing daylight I held a flashlight for hubby as he dug and dug to no avail.  

Suddenly the shovel broke and the end flew across the yard.  We watched as it went into the air landing away from the dig site.  Okay, it was dark ... but it went somewhere!

Turning to one another we began laughing ... now what are we going to do? ...oh Elisha ...

No, the situation did not change - it was a sad time with difficult circumstances, but our attitudes did and God worked everything out for our favor including Hubby passing a kidney stone and not needing surgery.

So,what is the point I am trying to make?

The lessons we can learn from Sarah and the prophet's ax head are that God does care about all the details, small or large,  He is aware of our circumstances and in the midst of trouble God is always there with answers, even though they may seem strange, unlikely, impossible or humorous.

If we truly trust God and bring our cares to Him, He may provide or supply our need in surprising unusual ways of favor.  Somewhere in it all there is something that will cause us to smile or laugh; not at the problem, but because God will come through with the solution and it might cause you to break out in laughter!

In the beginning there was unbelief, but in the end  Sarah found laughter and new joy.  The awkward flying ax story changed from a terrible unfortunate accident to a terrific impossible event that turned the prophet's crying into leaps of thankful joy.

The psalmist reminds us of God's promise when he triumphed over his enemies:

"Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones! Praise His Holy name. For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime!  Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning." (Psalm 30:4-5 NLT)

I do not know what you may be experiencing at this time, but encourage you not to give up on God - joy is coming!  He holds nothing good back from you and is your hope of favor when faith seems weak.

"For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows (unique) favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless." (Psalm 84:11)

Like the anointed worship leader Don Moen wrote in an amazing song, "God will make a way, when there seems to be no way."

Believe God will do something new that will help you get through whatever it is by granting His unique favor to your situation as He did with Sarah and the perplexed prophet.

He will make a pathway to victory that you did not expect; it will cause joy and laughing to your spirit, soul and body. Then you will proclaim like Sarah, "God made me laugh!"

My Soul Finds Rest

Hello Friends,

I’m spending time with my husband for the long holiday weekend hoping to get some much-needed rest from our labor. 

As we are away from one another, I pray that your soul finds rest in God alone in these difficult times.

“Only in God do I find rest; my salvation comes from Him” (Psalm 62:1 CEB)

Rest from Labor

Finding that Place of Rest

BW our little "Welcome Wagon"

I was working extra-long hours in order to take off a few days over the Easter holiday weekend.  We were supposed to be going out of town to visit with some friends we hadn’t seen in years. 

My schedule was planned out pretty well so I could make my writing obligation deadlines, when something totally unexpected was thrown in my path.  Work would have to wait. 

It was Holy Thursday, the day before Good Friday when our little rescue kitty Mercy ran to the garage door.  She had a sense something wasn’t right with her “bud” so my husband followed to see why she was fussing. 

There he was lying on the floor gasping for breath … rushing to his side it was only a few seconds, and then our friend was gone.  BW had crossed over without any signs of him being sick.

Facing the Cowardly Lion

To say the month of March comes in like a lion would have been an understatement this year.  It began with my father being in the hospital, gaining another rescue cat who had been shot, a rescue with feline herpes went blind overnight, the passing of BW kitty, then our beloved pastor who married us met Jesus on Easter, internet problems, car issues … I could go on but why keep feeding the lion? 

Through all of this I kept going to my kitchen window.  You know … the one I talk about so often?  No matter what’s happening inside, beyond that glass pane I see Jesus alive and working all around me.  

When I look out my window God calms my spirit reminding me of John 10:10. He describes the desire of satan is to destroy, tear down and consume all that is good.  Like a cowardly lion he uses things, people and events to weaken God’s people into thinking they have lost favor in the Lord’s eyes. 

“The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, devour and destroy. I (Jesus) come that they might have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10 TLV) 

Ah, but something happens to remind me the Lamb of God conquered that cowardly lion and finding that place of rest restores my faith.  God showed His favor through all the devil’s storms that tried to get me frustrated and weary.   

God’s Favor is Always There

Wiping away the tears over the sudden loss of BW there were things that had to be done immediately.  Praying that the storm and rain be calmed, my husband set out to get the things he needed to lay our pet to rest. 

When hubby got to our car there was a paper stashed under the wiper blade that read, “You have a flat tire.”  Great, now before he could get what he needed the tire had to be repaired. 

God blessed my husband to be able to get the tire fixed right away with little waiting.  Since the tire needed to be replaced hubby asked for the others to be rotated and balanced.  The bill total was $10.00 and that was for the new tire warranty.  Thank You Jesus!    

Before returning home my husband needed to pick up a specific bottle of CoQ-10 vitamins I needed for the next day.  Not being able to find it where I first sent him, he went to another store.  There was a super sale going on that we weren’t aware of, not being a regular customer of the establishment.

The product I wanted was in stock and on sale as “buy one get one free.”  When hubby took the product to the sales clerk he told them that they only had one bottle of the item I wanted in that size.  In the end, we were given favor with two smaller bottles (along with the larger size I originally wanted) that totaled even more pills (170 for the price of 80).   

He called me in excitement over the favor he received, but the devil wanted to snatch it and steal our joy.  When hubby got out of the car at the store he noticed the hubcap on the new tire was missing.  The mechanic didn’t put it on properly and it fell off somewhere on the road. 

Retracing his steps my husband looked to see if it he could locate it, but it was to no avail. Returning to where he got the tire, hubby reported it to the mechanic who became extremely upset.  The last thing we would feel good about is costing someone their job, so my husband assured him this would go no further and left the store. 

When hubby returned home he was able to finish his responsibilities and the rain remained tucked in the clouds until the job was finished.   

Who Let the Devil In?  

The weekend passed and although our household was still in a state of unrest, I was able to accomplish some major milestones.  When I went to share them I stopped to think who in the world would even be interested or care.  That unloved, unwanted feeling started to cross my thinking when I recognized that the cowardly lion was trying to steal my peace and favor from God. 

It started happening again … the lion was loose in our home. I didn’t see him enter, but none-the-less the devil was roaring and trying to eat away at hope of “good things” to come. 

There was a battle with an insurance company, my new phone was defective, and hubby was upset about his ladder not being delivered on time. 

They said it would take three days, but eleven days later the ladder still hadn’t arrived.  Listening to him on the phone with the customer service department I thought, “What’s the big deal if it was a few days late?”  With it being the holiday weekend I could understand it happening. 

He was on the phone a few hours going back and forth explaining how it should have been here, where it had been shipped across three states and that his name was spelled wrong on the tracking stats.   All that frustration and worry for a few dollars to be knocked off the price.  Was it worth it? 

Waiting for Victory 

“Victory” the most recent rescue cat at that time who was shot was scheduled to have his cast removed on Tuesday (March 29^th, 2016) at 9:00 a.m.  I gave him that name because the world believed he wouldn’t make it. However, I prayed for God to give him victory over the inhuman act that was committed on his life.

The Lord heard my prayer. With hubby out of the house for the day I was looking forward to my time with the Lord and getting some writing done.   

Morning was spent when my husband called explaining that the vet hadn’t been able to see Victory, because there were some emergencies.  We understood completely, but were concerned that Victory kitty still hadn’t had anything to eat that day.  

It was the end of the work day and the vet was exhausted with his chaotic schedule. I felt so bad for him; he was trying his best to take care of all the animals and please everyone. With limited help there’s just so much he was able to do. 

By the time he was examined, Victory had already removed his own cast and now had to stay overnight so he wouldn’t walk on his leg until fully examined.  Apparently Victory wasn’t willing to wait for his freedom and chose to have “victory” over circumstances right then. 

Covering in the Storm 

After cardio physical rehab on Wednesday hubby went to see Victory at the Animal Hospital.  Before I got a chance to work on the computer, we were surrounded by terrible thunder storms.  Once more I would spend time at my kitchen window, where Jesus would join me. 

The rain was coming down in sheets as if someone was standing outside with a garden hose pointed at the window.  Flashes of light and rolls of thunder echoed in the house as the storm was directly overhead. 

Not long after, it tapered off but was still raining steadily.  In the distance I could see birds playing and a squirrel eating at the feeder under a small roof that was broken and disheveled.  They weren’t fazed at all and went about enjoying their day through the storm. 

In my spirit I could hear the Lord explaining the actions of the birds and how they are at rest under the covering.  I backed away from the window and looked around me and connected the two situations.   

Plenty of storms have taken place this month, but we were never without a covering from God.  Sadly we didn’t always receive it, even though we pray Psalm 91 over our lives each day.  

¹ Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. ² This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust Him. 

³ For He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. ⁴ He will cover you with His feathers. He will shelter you with His wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.  (Psalm 91:1-4 NLT) 

My husband shares how Christians fall prey to the lion (satan) because they have removed themselves from God’s protective covering.  That’s a hard thing to grasp, because we don’t want to believe we are the cause of some situations. 

Whether or not we are the cause of a problem, believers in Jesus cannot lose faith thinking God will not work things out for His glory and our good.  Favor is still active, God has never left His Throne of Grace and Jesus has promised to be with us for the entire earthly journey if we let Him.   

By journeying with Jesus we can be sure that there will be havens of rest along the way. 

Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble , and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still.  Then they are glad because they are quiet; He guides them to their desired haven.  Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! (Psalm 107:28-31 NKJV)

This Week’s Challenge:

Finding Your Place of Rest 

The roaring lion (satan) continues to show his teeth trying to make us believe that the Lamb that was slain was also devoured. 

We know that’s a lie, because God’s Not Dead!  Jesus Lamb of God is very much alive and working on our behalf bestowing favor, grace, mercy and blessings to all who will join Him in that place of spiritual rest. 

I’ve learned that when my spirit (inner man) is at rest with God, He gives me strength to continue the journey with Jesus no matter where it leads. So every time we were confronted with another situation I found myself back at my place of rest … the kitchen window where hope is restored like Job’s was. 

“You have granted me life and favor, and Your care

Our challenge this week requires finding that “haven place of rest” in the middle of a trial, test or storm.  Seek out a resting place where God can care for your spirit when you can’t leave a situation. 

Look for a place that is near where you can go to as often as needed during the day and nobody has to know a thing. 

It must be a place that takes you away emotionally (not necessarily physically) from what you are facing at the moment, so you will be able to stop feeding the lion devil your doubts and fears.  

A place where you meet up with the Lord to get a “breather” from the frustration, chaos and turmoil of the events that may be happening in your life at the time.   

There have been times in teaching and work when I needed that place of rest immediately.  I would retreat to my car, the playground, backstage of the auditorium or staff lounge to literally take in some deep breaths. 

Other close places where I’ve found quick solace and “serenity now” have been the backyard, bathroom, porch and even a closet.   Go to a place where you can quietly talk to Jesus and let Him comfort you.  

The change of scenery will remind you that God is right there and His favor on you fully covers this situation.  Breathe in the Holy Spirit and go back to the task empowered. 

Some awful things were happening outside my “world” window, but I was safe, dry and in a place of protection because Jesus was there for “my” journey.  Storms don’t frighten or throw Him off course. 

Even though we look for tangible favor, it’s the unseen favor of God that carries us through to the other side of the storm. 

Remember God’s faithful promises are part of His favor armor (covering) on believers.  With Christ by our side, there is always a haven place to find rest (especially during storms) under the covering of His favor umbrella by faith.
