Finish What You Started

The new year is in full swing – are you?  Tell you what … some of my days have been slow going trying not to get ahead of myself in excitement.

Oh, it’s not that I’m pumped about all the “projects” I have on my vision and goals list, it’s that I had SO much unfinished stuff that I didn’t know where to start first!  Can you relate?

Maybe I wasn't the Queen of Unfinished Projects, but it sure felt like it.  Finally things were moving forward and I was off on the right foot.

I was actually on schedule (like that’s hard to do only a few weeks into the year!), when my computer began having hissy fits after we loaded a new bible software program.  That changed the game plan instantly, and sent me into overdrive trying to figure out how in the world am I going to catch up at this stage.

It didn’t seem fair!  I was doing life coaching, getting people started on their own journey to success when mine stopped before I barely got my hands on the tasks.  Then God reminded me of a conversation during prayer time just a few months ago when I was getting discouraged about my own incomplete goals list for 2019.

God Doesn’t Attend Pity Parties

You know it’s easy to be radical wanting to make changes about life, especially when we feel the new year brings fresh beginnings for “do overs.”  We actually make plans, and start in on phase one feeling good about what we’re going to accomplish thinking this will be the year I do it!

After a few weeks the excitement of phase one dwindles and is soon gone.  The pity party invitations go out and woe is me gets a foothold in the heart door.

It’s not long before we let discouragement win and think “it wasn’t to be” I guess.  Dreams shatter and we fall right back into the same old pattern we hated, but can’t seem to break.  Ugh!!! A million times ugh!

You know what?  God had no intentions of attending or participating in my pity party.  As a matter of fact, He put something before my eyes that I’ve done in the past, but haven’t practiced lately.  It led me back to the Old Testament and the prophet Haggai.

Come Back Here

There was a time when the citizens of Judah were excited about the message the prophet Haggai gave them which involved the re-building of the temple.  However, after a short time the Jews lost their enthusiasm and stopped all the work leaving the city still in ruins.

After a time at the daily grind their values changed. The work of God diminished.  Instead they sought out their own dreams and built elaborate homes for themselves, even though they were smack in the midst of the assignment.

Having a vision of building their own homes wasn’t the problem.  It was their lack of finishing the task God gave them first.  In the beginning they were like enthusiastic toddlers, but soon grew bored with the project when things got a little tough or it was taking too long.

Rather than sticking to the plan they quit and left, leaving a big mess in the middle of the city!  Parent’s can you relate with giving instructions to your kids to pick up their toys only to find out that they have left the room to seek after something better to do?

You can kind of imagine how ticked off it must have made the LORD.  Parents don’t mind that kids want to do other things, but need them to get back in that room and first finish what you asked right?  Of course!

When God Says Enough

Needless to say (but I’m going to anyway …), God wasn’t pleased with the behavior of His children and had no intentions of letting them slide in following through with what they started.  I can picture it like a father getting after his kids to pick up their toys to put them away after the Mom (like Haggai) already gave the instruction.

Whining and stomping their feet, they begin giving Dad a ton of excuses as to why they can’t do it or haven’t gotten around to cleaning up the disorganization they created.  He’s had enough of their disobedience and doesn’t want to hear it. With an outstretched arm he points them back to the task, staying to watch as they finish gathering their belongings to put them in their proper places.

Can’t you hear the squabbling that went on as Haggai tries to reason with God over their poor behavior?  Don’t we do that in coming up with excuses as to why we didn’t finish what we started?

The people basically said:

We know God wants us to do this, but it’s not the right time.  We have our own harvests to bring in and don’t have the time at the moment.  It’s not convenient right now.

That’s it!  Enough is enough!  God sent Haggai the prophet to stir them into action again by putting them in their place.  He refused to accept their excuses for not sticking with the vision God laid out for them to follow.  In other words, he was ticked off and was about to spell out the consequences for their lack of obedience.

Consider Your Ways

We learn about God’s response in the book of Ezra, (beginning in chapter 4) where He in essence read them the riot act and why their work hadn’t been blessed by Him. This was Haggai’s message to the Jews in Judah:

“The word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet saying, is it time for you to work on your own houses while the temple is in ruins?  Consider your ways and what you’ve done!

You sow a lot, but reap little, you eat and there isn’t enough, you drink but are still thirsty.  You wear clothes but aren’t warm, and make a living but there’s never enough to pay your bills.  If you consider your ways and what you did instead of what I told you, then you would know why I haven’t blessed the work of your hands.

As soon as you made a little profit, I blew it away because you let My house remain in ruins while everyone went and visited your houses leaving mine empty!  So, I allowed the drought to fall on the land, your harvest, livestock and everything you did fell in ruin with the poor seeds you sowed into my vision!

Now, consider what you did and get back up to the mountains. Pick up the wood and build the temple.  I will be with you to bless this project and cause favor from the King in giving of supplies. This is what will please and glorify me. (taken from Haggai chapter 1 and Ezra chapter 5; emphasis mine)

The people gladly received the message and immediately went to work finishing what they started in rebuilding the temple of the LORD.  When they obeyed, God was with them, the task was completed in record time and they were able to establish their vision as well.

“Take delight (get excited) in the Lord, and He will give you the
desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4-5)

Do This First

Remember I mentioned in the beginning of the year how I was really on schedule and everything was going as planned until the computer thingy?  Well, it’s true and although a monkey wrench was thrown into some projects, I didn’t get flustered because of that conversation I had with the Lord over my past goals.  It’s literally what turned things around and kept me from climbing back in the boxing ring to beat myself up over what happened that was out of my control.

My not being able to finish everything on the “goal” list for my vision board from last year wasn’t the issue, even though I thought it was.  In my spirit I heard the Lord tell me these four words:

“Finish What You Started!”

I didn’t need to make another list or add new things.  In my thinking, the old ones obviously weren’t God’s plan since they didn’t happen.  That wasn’t it at all.

Get Back to the Mountain

Gifted Christian musician Tim Oladeru got this concept and it gave him peace like it did me! Just because it’s a new year doesn’t mean that you have to start everything new!  Sometimes, the best thing you can do is be disciplined enough to finish what you started the previous year or improve on it.

When making out my vision board and goal planning last year, didn’t I bring it before the Lord in the first place?  Wasn’t He always a part of the process?

Yes, then why did I think it wasn’t good and I needed to ditch it for something else?  There wasn’t a reason at all, other than the world trying to tell me I failed and needed to do something else instead.

I merely need to finish what I already started!  In other words, like God told the Hebrew children … get back to that mountain and tackle it by finishing the job you started!

Was this a big revelation?  Not so much … more like disobedience and fault finding I’d say.  This is a matter that only I could get under control and correct – so I have and am in the process of some major overhauls.

This is something I always did, but somewhere along my journey I strayed off the straight and narrow path.  I just needed to get back to that mountain (or shall I say “mountains”) I was trying to avoid!

“So, finish what you began to do.
Then your willingness will be matched by what you accomplished.”
(2 Corinthians 8:11 God’s Word Translation)

The Lord has given clarity to this 20/20 vision request to stay focused and get organized.  Be diligent and determined, then you can move on to something else with a clear mindset.

Start Right Now

When you walk around your house and see something needs to be done do you look at it and say, “I need to do that someday,” then walk away with the project still left undone?  Generally speaking, we all do this I suppose, but that particular “someday” never comes does it?

This is where we need to retrain our brains and stop the excuses.  When we change our mindset to think “excellence”, we won’t let things go by.  Start practicing that now is the right time to get things done.  When the Holy Spirit puts it before you, now is the time!

God blesses us for our obedience and satan knows that, so learn to consider your ways in which you go about daily activities.  The devil watches our patterns and behavior, because he cannot read our minds.  When we put things off over and over, he swoops in to devour our progress knowing blessings aren’t coming to this person who continually quits before finishing.

What have you let slide by in not getting organized or following through on something you started?  It doesn’t matter why you didn’t finish, that’s in the past.

Start right now and do something today.  It doesn’t have to be major, but you have to begin and take this seriously if your goals are ever to be accomplished. Every little step counts so take that step to re-start the process.

Go to God in prayer and ask Him where you should begin, and then get to it so you’ll be back on track for His blessings on your work.  If needed, ask for a reminder of the last thing He told you to do, and then do it without hesitation.

Instruction and obedience shouldn’t have a long period of time between them.  Immediate obedience is the difference between blessings being manifested today, tomorrow or never.

Let’s not get in the position where God has to chasten us for not finishing what we started.  We all know how that would end if we take that path correct?

You Have to Start in Order to Finish

Do you remember a few weeks back when I talked about Paul not going to Troas because God changed his direction?  Well, on Paul’s 3rd missionary trip he was able to return to Troas and fulfill his commitments, finishing what he started.  It was just in the process of the journey that God took him on a bigger road trip.

I want to encourage you to believe in your dreams again and have hope. Get back to the mountain you avoided and start over; God isn’t through with you!  He wants to bless you with His favor, but it begins with obedience in finishing what you started.

“I have fought the good fight, I have stayed on course and finished the race, and through it all, I have kept believing.  I look forward to what’s in store for me: a crown of righteousness that the Lord – the always right and just judge – will give me that day (but it is not only for me, but for all those who love and long for His appearing).”
(2 Timothy 4:7-8 Voice)

What did you start in the past that you haven’t completed?  Maybe it’s a business, working out, losing weight, mending emotional fences.  It doesn’t matter; the fact is you weren’t able to complete it for some reason.  For me it was classes!

We all have them - those ongoing projects that are still waiting to be finished!  Perhaps you did start something, but need to improve on what you already have to better serve people and bring God glory.  That’s fine, but get back to that mountain and tackle it until you are finished the task.

If you are right on target and ready to begin something new with God, that’s great – go with God in His favor.  For most of us though, we’ve got some Masterful work to yet to finish, but this time we’re going to move forward with patience instead of frustration in achieving our goals.

“Finishing is better than starting.  Patience is better than pride.”
(Ecclesiastes 7:8)

In 2019, my husband and I had a blessed and productive year accomplishing things in areas that I didn’t expect, but fell way short in others.  Together we faced extremely difficult situations as well as some happy times.

However, in December when I was feeling discouraged and pressured to get more crossed off my life goal list, the Lord’s message “finish what you started” turned out to be words of insight, concepts and ideas.  Instead of a browbeating for not achieving all my goals toward the vision in my heart, I was encouraged and motivated to keep going.

We never know what a day (or year for that matter) may hold, but God does.  The Lord knew which events would take place (such as hubby’s eleventh hospital stay), and that I needed words of affirmation, not chastisement for a vision refresh.  Not this time anyway!

God wasn’t angry or disappointed with me; He merely wants to complete the good work He began in me with His full favor and blessings.

“I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6 ESV)

That’s all it took, and I firmly planted myself in position to finish something I had started.  For me it was additional courses toward another degree that took me eight years when it should have taken less than two!  Hey … I was a little busy!

Finally, on December 31st, 2019 at 11:45 pm I finished that goal!  The weight was lifted and feels so good not having it constantly nagging at me to get it done.  I can fully attest to what scripture declares … finishing is truly better than starting.

This Week’s Challenge:
2020 Vision Refresh

Although you may not have accomplished all your goals or vision in past years, do not be disheartened.  You just need a little refresh of the correct steps to take, which include finishing the ones He’s already given you.  Friend, Hallelujah - if it’s of God, it’s still there and in His plans.

“But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His
heart through all generations.” (Psalm 33:11)

I love that verse, don’t you?  God has given each of us a specific vision for life; get it back in focus and start refreshed.

Consider the things you have been doing that took you away from the “mountain” so to speak.  Were they always legit, or simply not following through when you had the opportunity?  Maybe it was both, but not anymore!  Ask the Lord for the 2020 clarity you need to accomplish your goals in finishing what you started!

Never forget that all things work together to those that love the Lord God and His vision.  Believe that this is going to be your best year of clarity for the manifestation of vision and goals.  As soon as you are back on track, stay there by sticking to the plan of God and His favor will surely come.

“May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed! (Psalm 20:4)

Until next time, believe God for renewed vision favor!

“Rest on My vision for miracle favor.”

Ten Biblical Reasons for Rest and Relaxation: Part 3

How much joy and peace did you actually get during our break in the series on rest?  Have you put any of it into practice or did you find yourself caught up in the stress with all the rest?

Does this picture look a little like how you feel?  Maybe a revisit to last week's challenge might help first.

If not ... let’s get back on track in preparation for the new year with God’s Daily Favor.

In our last session together we left off with Biblical reason #8 for partaking in a period of rest, so we’ll pick up from there.  You can read the beginning of this teaching series here:  Part 1   Part 2

Reason 9 – Rest Kindles Joy

“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
and uphold me by Your generous Spirit."  (Psalm 51:12)

You may be wondering, “What does my joy have to do with rest?”  It actually has quite a lot to do with true joy and here’s why.

When we are exhausted it’s pretty difficult to find the joy in even the simple things, like a blue jay fluttering about outside a window on a sunny morning or watching your husband try to fold clothes the way “he” thinks you do it.  A rather amusing sight actually!

Sleep is a precious thing.  It is necessary for good physical health as well as good mental well-being. Unfortunately, many people find a good night’s sleep to be a rare commodity.  Of course, when you examine sleep according to the five senses, you just might find a sleep solution that helps you get the sleep you need.  I’d take that bunny trail, but that’s for another time.

There’s no way we can appreciate the grace of God that is given to us on a regular basis, let alone trying to seek out His daily favor for the challenges we may face for the day!  Our brains just can’t get into gear with the lack of oxygen we get from a poor night’s rest.

It never fails (for me anyway) that when I’m at the heightened point of being tired that all I want to do is go to bed.  Nothing else matters.  I can’t focus, work, relax or even eat.

In other words, I’m not a joy to be around during those times.  When I allow myself to get that far without rest it doesn’t please anyone, especially the Lord.  Plainly put, if I want to continue to receive favor from the Lord I need to follow what He says concerning everything that pertains to life and health.

That four letter word is what seems to get in the way - OBEY!  Perhaps the New Living Translation better suits me when I fail to follow wisdom.

“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
and make me willing to obey You."  (Psalm 51:12)

No Joy Suckers

Slipping into the “must do now” mode sucks the joy out of why I’m doing it in the first place and totally violates my own life rules.  For those who have been under my teachings or visited my home, you know that I have a house policy.

Above my light stitch by the front door is a sign that all must observe if they are to enter.  Sounds rather tough doesn’t it, but I really believe in and follow it myself for a foundation piece to receiving the favor of God in my life.

If you come with an attitude or a spirit of disagreement (otherwise referred to as a critical spirit) it has to be left outside so that the peace within is not broken.  There have been so many times when my husband brings a less than friendly spirit home with "un-intentions" of unloading it on me.  I know he has to vent, but we have learned there is a proper way that it can be done without having the joy sucked out of everything else that has happened that day.

We have followed this practice so long that when it starts to happen, he turns around, closes the door and re-enters the house with a big smile saying, “Hi Sweetheart, I’m home!”  It works every time and usually bumps up the joy atmosphere with laughter.

If you're not quite sure whether or not you fit into this category, here are a few pointers that might give you a clue.  Notice I said "a few" ...
Resting in Joy and Peace

You see, there are plenty of things that can steal our joy if we let them, especially lack of rest.  The key phrase here is “if we let them” … we have a choice.  However, when our physical body hasn’t been re-fueled, we don’t always recognize that our joy is being picked away little by little, until we’re at the point of frustration.

Scriptures tell us that Jesus is the one who gave us the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which include the filling of joy and peace among many more.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (In otherwords there is no law against these things.)”
(Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV)

Followers of Christ are to be joy givers, not joy takers or “joy suckers”.  We fervently need to be on the lookout for things that steal the pleasure of what God has given us through salvation.  All too often we overlook that the lack of rest is a major joy remover, which causes us to operate out of reflex, jerk reaction feelings and not wisdom.

This doesn’t mean that we are to maintain an attitude of joy just when things are going fine, but live full of joy regardless of the circumstances.  Having proper rest certainly helps us to live the life Jesus died for to give us.

Our hope in Christ activates the favor of salvation gifts to overflow in us, giving confidence to His promises here and eternally.  It’s Christ’s joy in us that changes things around us to get in line with His Word.

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in His promises." (Romans 15:13 AMP)

Resting spiritually on the Word of God allows our physical side to confidently abound in the power of the Holy Spirit to work things out for our good so that it glorifies God.  The joy of our salvation is restored, because we cast our cares on God and trust Him with all that’s going on around us.

This Week’s Challenge:
Show Me A Sign

Who would ever imagine so much could be tied together with a little thing called “rest’?  God did!  It has always been His plan for us to abound in joy, not just experience it every so often when the spirit hits.

The problem with relying on our feelings to “keep going … press on … don’t quit or everything will fall apart” kind of self-righteous attitude, is that we never know what kind of spirit will emerge in any given situation when operating in overload modes.  Trusting God changes everything so that we can rest spiritually and physically.

Yes, we need to have an “I can do all things through Christ” attitude.  Unfortunately, the “I can do things without Christ” part usually surfaces when we think we can ignore His Words on proper rest.

We are constantly expecting Jesus to “show us a sign” that He is working in our lives, but what about doing the reverse?  Our challenge this week is to literally make a sign as a reminder that joy lives, abides and dwells inside us and our homes.

Example: Joy Lives Here

Just as I have a physical sign by my door, I’d like to encourage you to do the same. Yours doesn’t have to say exactly what mine does, but it’s a conversation opener for sure.

If we are to ever experience complete rest, our joy has to be restored spiritually and that certainly is good enough reason for me.  What about you?

My prayer is that God, the source of all hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trusted in Him.  Then you will overflow with confident hope resting on and through the power of the Holy Spirit. (from Romans 15:13 NLT)

Let the joy of God’s favor be restored in you through rest!

One more thing … I haven’t forgotten, but deliberately wanted reason #10 to fly solo.  You’ll have to read why next time.  Looking forward to closing out this series with you and pray it has richly been a blessing.

Restore Your Joy in Me (Hezekiah Walker)

Until next time, experience the joy of God’s favor!

Restore favor with a day for rest.”

Ten Biblical Reasons for Rest and Relaxation: Part 2

How have you been doing in penciling in time for rest?  Did you do it? I hope so., if not, why not?

There’s something refreshing about turning off the electronics and simply enjoying what’s going on around us.  Stress seems to melt away, our senses are heightened and we literally become calmer (even without the assistance of pets!).

Last time we left off with Biblical reason #5 for partaking in a period of rest, so we’ll pick up from there.  If you haven’t read part one of this teaching series take a look at it here.

Thanks for joining us on Daily Favor Blog.

The Law of Rest

We could favor an argument for taking time off of work, but there is a biblical reason why giving your body and mind a break really works in the process of healing or overall good health.  There are numerous methods and points on the wisdom of rest, however, in this series I’m briefly dealing with what I deem as ten of the most important reasons.

In past teachings (such as Life in God’s Garden), we focused on how favor for mankind was designed into the masterplan of God.  If we look even deeper, we can see how God’s health laws including rest were given to us in creation.

Genesis chapters 1-3 describes how God gave us rules for proper nutrition, exercise, enjoying the outdoors, trusting in Him and observing a time for the body to rest.  Learning from past mistakes, we don’t have to fail at this practice of obeying God as Adam and Eve did.

Reason 6 – Rest Saves Relationships

“Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it:
Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39 NIV)

If we haven’t a clue on how to take care of ourselves, how in the world can we possibly care for others as Christ does?  Loving others like ourselves is probably the last thing most of us want to do if we base it on how we treat ourselves.

I’ve witnessed believers who look like they’ve been through the ringer and are never in a good mood.  Get away from me stinko!

Their spirit, soul and body reek of things I don’t want near me!  There’s no way I want them to treat (or “love” as the Bible says) me the way they treat themselves.

What’s love got to do with it?

How are you loving others when you feel burned out, tired and need refueling?  If you’re anything like me, when I’m in need of rest I “may” over exaggerate things, get a little irritable, have an outburst or two, become critical minded … maybe … okay probably!

Rest produces soundness, clear thinking, proper attitudes and in general, a nicer person to be around.  Not to make light of the situation, but relationships become much more appealing when sanity is present!

We can love others (neighbors close and far) as Christ has loved us when doing whatever it takes to literally get some shut-eye and rest.

Reason 7 – Rest Restores Visibility

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
(Ephesians 2:10 NKJV)

When God created mankind, grace or favor was part of the creation package for living a blessed life. However, sin changed how favor was given to man from that point, changing how our “image” reflected His.

In order for us to carry out God’s original commands from the Garden of Eden given to Adam, a restoration of workmanship (purpose and design of man) had to be done.   This is where the cross of Jesus and redemption becomes significant for how Christians function in this world.

When a person accepts Jesus into their life believing He is the Only Begotten Son of God, who Redeems mankind of sin, they literally become new creations as in the beginning of creation.  Righteousness (a right standing with God) is restored. No longer are they lost beings, but visible to God as His sons and daughters through Christ qualifying them for active duty.

God’s grace activates Divine Favor for creating and doing things that will ultimately build His Kingdom by drawing people to Him.  This salvation favor makes us fit and ready to perform good works.

A well-rested person can handle more responsibilities, because they think more clearly and act instead of react to situations.  When we follow the rest command, we may look visibly rested to the world, but even more, the Lord sees how we followed His rules concerning rest.

Rested people are more productive, or in the spiritual realm “fruitful” in their work and calling.  Seeing how obeying God comes foremost in living the life He ordained will cause a person to grow in His grace and favor every time!  You have to admit, it’s pretty hard not to see when someone has the favor of God activated in their life!

King Solomon shared this wisdom from God in Proverbs for us to use as a guide for living a favored life.

“My child, never forget the things I have taught you.
Store my commands in your heart.  If you do this,
you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying.

Never let loyalty and kindness leave you.
Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.
The you will find favor with both God and people,
and you will earn a good reputation.” (Proverbs 3:1-4 NLT)

Forming a reputation happens whether we want it to or not, so why not form a good one that visibly shows the favor of God is working in your life?

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you
which path to take (in making wise decisions for your life).”
 (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT emphasis mine)

When we do as God commands (resting is just one of them) and seek His will, it shows that we trust His judgement even in times where we lack understanding.  A rested soul is more confident and likely to be bold in stepping out of their comfort zone in walking the path on the good works road, which will always get God’s attention and those around you as well.

“For we are God’s masterpiece.  He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago (to be our way of life).” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT emphasis NRSV)

Reason 8 – Rest Leads to Worship

“Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest is still open,
let us take care that none of you should seem to have
failed to reach it.” (Hebrews 4:1 NRSV)

There have been things that have happened in my life that brought me closer to the Lord.  At times it was out of desperation, but surprisingly many of those relationship moments were based on the magnificence of His Creative works.

I can remember years ago when I first began spending hours outside sitting on the top of our picnic table with my feet pressed firmly on the bench.  It was during my graduate studies that I found the scenic view so beautiful and calming, but it also took me to a place of worship that I had not known.

Every direction I looked the hand of God was visible and yet each setting was extremely different.  Corn fields, vast woods, open roads, and abandoned train tracks surrounded the four corners of our dwelling allowing us to experience the wonder of Creation through the hand of God and mankind.

Those daily quiet times caused my faith and relationship with the Lord to grow.  Entering into His rest allowed communication that gave me clarity and direction.

Leading worship in church became more meaningful and everything I saw became a lesson in teaching, preaching, writing or testimony of how awesome God is.  Allowing myself to rest under the open skies I marveled at His handiwork and praise flowed more freely from my lips.

Both the Old and New Testaments give us direction on the validity of rest, but many fail to see how it affects their relationship with God and His favor.  Failing to obey the commands of God will have consequences because of disobedience.

Believers in Christ and His eternal work on the cross, are able to enter into rest here on Earth as well as in Heaven.  We are given permission to cease or stop our labor from work as God did His and are to make the effort to do the same so we are not disobedient. (see Hebrews 4:9-11)

Taking time to rest is more than getting a break from work; it’s maintaining a special relationship with our Creator, Savior and God by worshiping Him with obedience.  In turn our bodies are refreshed, restored and healing can occur igniting more reasons to worship and serve an Awesome God.

When we are privileged to enter a resting mode, we get to experience something God enjoyed. He graciously shared rest with us because He knows how the human body works and what it needs to be rejuvenated.

Giving us the command to rest was a means of love, goodness, kindness and yes, favor for His creation (that would be you and I).  Spiritual, emotional and physical rest will cause the way you worship God to change dramatically in your favor, because it’s something that pleases Him.

God’s Truth Overrides Anything

A medical and psychological study published in 2017 by the Harvard Business Review came to the conclusion that humans were designed for “periods of rest, silence, and deep thought” because it’s a process needed to restore the nervous system.  Although their facts may fall into place in some areas, the truth of God overrides anything man may discover.

Rest was built into the creation design as a pattern for us to follow.  God said to do it and that settles any questioning of the matter.

There is yet another thing we cannot overlook in the facilitating of proper rest on a regular basis.  Making sure to get proper sleep definitely encourages healing in the body, but unless we cast our cares on the Lord that “rest” isn’t sufficient to cover the mental aspect of anxiety, worry, stress, doubt and fear.

We can be confident that in turning over our problems to Christ that He will gladly receive them, because He loves and cares for us.  Isn’t that a benefit of salvation – saving us from the results of sin that bring us down?

Job said it well in how he responded when his whole world was turned upside down in tragedy.

“You (Lord God) have granted me life and favor,
and Your care has preserved my spirit.” (Job 10:12 NKJV)

The Bible tells us that when we put our trust in God, our strength to handle situations is renewed.  We won’t get tired or fret even during adverse circumstances because our minds are fixed on Christ and His abilities to turn things around.

“But the people who trust (hope in; wait on) the LORD will become strong again.  They will rise up as an eagle in the sky (with wings like eagles);  they will run and not need rest (grow weary);
they will walk and not become tired (faint).” (Isaiah 40:31 EXB)

During times of fellowship, focus on the Creator and not problems.  Learn to rest as in sitting quietly to hear from God, then to bed for sleep as an act of obedience, trust and faith knowing that your life has been granted God’s favor of protection.

“I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone,
O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8 NKJV)

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will
lie down and your sleep will be sweet.” (Psalm 3:24 NKJV)

This Week’s Challenge:
Do’s and Don’ts of Bed Rest

There’s no denying that the busier we are the more our bodies crave quiet and rest.  This week’s challenge is to change the way we go about getting literal sleep so that our bodies can restore, refresh and renew itself naturally as God intended.

One thing that we really need to change is our thinking on the amount of sleep needed and the time to call it a night.  This is where we’ll set our focus on changing our ways in preparing for rest so that our bodies can do what they were designed to do in the first place.

It’s back to the basics with some simple do’s and don’ts!

1 - Don’t exercise at night, it stimulates the body and triggers the brain to get active.

2 - Don’t break out those late-night goodies.  Restrict eating and drinking in the evening, because the body will be busy processing and breaking down the food while you are trying to sleep.

You may sleep, but the body will not have rested into that deep sleep stage (called NREM not REM stage) where the body does most of its restoration of damage that occurred during the day.  Although you may be sleeping your brain and inner systems are really active in fortifying immune systems, building tissues, cells, bone, muscle or healing something that may have happened during the course of your regular activities.

The body needs 8-12 hours of no food in order to rebuild, restore, rejuvenate and renew itself naturally.  Here’s where breaking the “fast” in the morning comes into play and getting those 6-9 hours of sleep really matter.

3 - Don’t get on the phone or social media to catch-up on what’s happening in everyone else’s life. This challenge is to restore our relationship with God, ourselves and others so that favor through obedience will be given.

4 - Don’t sleep with any lights on in the room including a night light.  Clock radios, phones or any type of “light noise” interferes with the brain being able to make serotonin for sleep and it increases the risk for diseases.

Serotonin is an internal clock and vital to the body as it stimulates the sleep/wake cycle.  It’s been referred to as the “happy” chemical because it is mainly responsible for the mental or psychological part of humans.

When it is active at the proper levels Serotonin helps correct depression, mood swings, appetite or digestive problems, memory loss, sexual functions and adds to overall mental wellness.  So, if you need a source of light for getting up at some point in the night, wear a face mask to cover your eyes when sleeping to block out any light.

1 - Do get in the habit of going to bed before midnight.  These hours are best for restoring the physical body and resetting the thinking pattern.

2 - Do refrain from deep conversations before going to bed.  Quarreling or talking through problems have to be silenced in prayer together.  We want the quiet process to encourage every “body” and soul in the house to rest.

Let’s start by really concentrating on practicing these 7 things.

1 – Shut down all media at least 3 hours before you go to bed.
2 – Finish all eating including snack and drinking by 7 p.m.
3 – Turn off most of the lights in the house to set a tone of rest.
4 – Wash-up, brush teeth, etc. signals the brain to prepare for sleep.
5 – Find a place to sit, read or journal letting your body slow down.
6 – Pray and meditate on the blessings and favor of the day.
7 – Give thanks with a grateful heart for what God has done for you.  It will lengthen the days of your life! Then go to sleep!

Friends, there’s no other way to put it than to say, if we want to grow in God’s favor then we have to start obeying.  Let’s go back to the beginning and fashion our time of rest like Jesus did.

Okay I’m going to call it a day for this session.  I know you’re anticipating the final two reasons, but they will come in due time! (sorry … had to go there.)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
We are truly blessed to be able to call you our friends!

Until next time, give thanks for the favor of rest!

“I have blessed with favor a day for rest.”
