On Tuesday, August 27th my husband and I had the
pleasure of going to lunch with a friend who was turning a fabulous 80 years old! Tris is spunky, funny, dresses to the nines, full
of smiles, and without a crook in her walk.
She is full of life and a delight to be around.
We arrived at the restaurant and had parked when here she
comes, right up behind us with a big grin on her face. In a flash, Tris was on our heels with a
stretched-out arm shouting, “I got the door.”
Entering the dining area the hostess instructed us to sit
where we liked. Plunking her pocketbook
on the floor she pulled out her chair and started in on a story. Oh no … it was not long before we were
laughing anticipating the outcome of her “swallowed tooth” story! We were not disappointed.
During our conversation, she was excited over showing off the
new pink coffee mug gift set to her senior girlfriend group – the “magnificent
seven,” and that she was going to bring it next time they met for dinner. Her
response sent us over the moon knowing it was something she liked.
“I’m glad you liked our gift and these are for you.”
I said handing her a yellow bouquet of flowers and dripping water all over the
table from the carry sack in which they were contained. I quickly began sopping up the water with napkins
when she took the flowers and leaned them up against her purse on the floor.
Pushing a small chocolate cream cake next to her plate I said,
“This is for you as well.” Putting down
her fork she smiled and picked up the dessert. “Ooooh, let’s just eat this!” She read my mind!
As we sat at the table I explained to our server that we
were celebrating my friend’s birthday and shared her age. Looking at her the lady acted surprised and
could not believe it. I felt the same
and thought God surely renewed her youth just like it says in His word.
Abounding in Benefits
There are many “benefits” as the Bible calls it, described for
those who accept and follow Christ as their Savior according to Psalm 103. God blesses the soul, forgives sins, heals diseases,
supplies good things, and even renews our bodies to name a few of those salvation
benefits.
However, there are more promises from God that go far beyond
the few mentioned in this passage and one is His favor. In verse 4 of that same chapter, it states
how God gives lovingkindness and mercy.
“Who redeems your life from destruction (saves you from
going to hell), Who crowns (adorns, encircles) you with lovingkindness and
tender mercies.”
The word “mercies” from the original Hebrew translation of
this verse means that God has compassion for us from the beginning; we are
cherished with great love from before we are born. Here God implies that He cherishes, takes
pity on, and has tender mercy for the fetus acknowledging it is a living being
He loves.
8) “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger,
and plenteous in mercy (great in mercy).
In verse eight “merciful” means God is compassionate and
full of mercy. Moving down in the blessing list of benefits we see the word
mercy again several times, only it does not mean the same as in the previous
verses.
Pick up with the last part of verse 8:
" ... and plenteous in mercy (great in mercy).
11) For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is
His mercy toward them that fear (revere) Him.
12) As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He
removed our transgressions (confessed sins) from us.
17) … but the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting
to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children’s
children;
18) To such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember
His commandments to do them."
If we look at verses 8b (the term mercy), 11 and 17, the same
word means a great deal more than God’s great compassion. It includes: kindness, goodness, mercy,
beauty and yes – favor referring to the person in reference.
Not only does God give favor, He abounds in it! These things cannot be bought, worked for, or
earned, but are given freely from the Lord because of His mercy (compassion).
If you are born again God's favor is automatically on
your life and available the moment you asked Jesus into your life and heart. Favor is a gift from God if you are a
believer, but many Christians do not know or realize it. Even more they do not
know how to walk in God's favor or recognize it in their daily lives.
Scriptures teach in Psalm 3:8 that the blessing of the Lord
is on His people. We can ask for favor on certain situations or increase
of favor, but the initial blessing of favor (compassionate mercy) we do not
need to ask for because it is already on you as a child of God’s.
Every person who trusts Jesus as their Savior under the New
Testament covenant, becomes an heir to the promises God made to Abraham.
We are identified as "seed" and “joint heirs with Jesus,” therefore
qualifying us as heirs to the covenant promise made to Abraham in the Old
Testament.
Upon salvation every individual receives the blessing of God
that includes His favor. They go together and cannot be separated.
Unfortunately, most Christians only believe in salvation
that grants them a place in Heaven one day; they never walk in God's blessing
or favor even though it is available to every child of God. It cannot be
earned, bought, or worked for … it is a gift!
It was one year ago since we first met sweet Tris at a water
dispenser in Walmart, and a few weeks later we were honored to celebrate her 79th
birthday at her home. After a wonderful
time of fellowship, she shared her love for Jesus and we ended the afternoon in
a time of prayer and blessings.
I am not sure how much she knows about God’s favor or
understands the depth of it, but pray she will experience this gift from the
Lord in ways more than she could ever ask or think. My prayer is the same for you!
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above
all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” (Ephesians
3:20 NKJV)

“You didn’t hear us laughing did you?”I asked the nurse as she entered the room.
With a huge smile on her face Tauna replied, “Yes, we all
heard you.You two are always up to
something.”
What else was there to do?For the past hour my husband had been through
a rather lengthy doctor’s visit and now waiting for some results we were left
on our own.I don’t know why, but shortly
after the giggles emerged and hubby set the laughing meter on “high”.

At the end of the doctor’s visit, the nurse was instructed
to take some blood for a specific test that was needed immediately. The rest of
the blood work was to be done the following day at the hospital.
For some reason my husband is a difficult subject when it
comes to drawing his blood.Finding
someone to do it without jabbing him a jillion times has become a quest for
us.I keep telling the medical staff to
let us bring in one of the rescue cats and they’ll have plenty of blood, but
they haven’t taken me up on it yet.
Failing to get the task done, Tauna decided that all the
lab work could be done the following day, and she’d get the documents needed
together for us to pick up later in the afternoon.With that being handled all that was left to
do was get the prescription forms from the doctor for the medications.
Returning to the room with a clipboard in her hand, Tauna
was true to her word.She hustled and
got as much done as she could on her end, even setting up the appointment with
the neurosurgeon.Handing my husband the
clipboard she explained that he needed to sign a release form that said he
wouldn’t sell any of the medications.This
was something new that we never had to do, so of course he couldn’t let it slide
and I knew hubby was about to get into trouble … again!
Opened for Favor
Taking the clipboard while signing, shaking his head as
if disappointed my husband said, “ …. well there goes the new TV we wanted.” Grabbing the paper Tauna burst out laughing
and affectionately sent us on our way (it’s a nice way to say “escorted us out”)
and said they would “call” when to pick up the rest of the paperwork.
Several hours went by and we still hadn’t heard from the
doctor’s office. I was concerned
that my husband wouldn’t be able to get the medication for that evening.Finally the information was relayed to the
druggist.
It was almost 4:25 p.m. and we needed to get to the pharmacy
by 4:30.Knowing that a disciple of
Jesus couldn’t break the law and speed, there was no way we’d be able to get
there before closing time.I suggested
(Okay – urged intently) that hubby call saying he was on his way, and ask if
they would remain there until we arrived.
Pulling up to the building we saw a person standing on a
chair inside the store looking like she was about to pounce anyone who
entered.Hesitantly opening the door
hubby looked up and asked, “Are you going to hit me?”Apparently they had already closed.The receptionist said, “No, the lock is above
the door and I’m the only one who can’t reach it.”They kindly showed us favor and reopened the
door.
National Bless Your Pharmacy Day
After we finished at the hospital on Thursday, we wanted
to be a blessing to the people at the pharmacy who went out of their way to
show us favor.Upon arriving with a gift
in hand, we made an announcement that “We declare that today is National bless
your pharmacy day.”With excitement and
joy they received the present with gladness.
When we gave that gift to the staff it wasn’t because we
were looking for applause or praise.With
joy we were fulfilling scripture in several ways and were obedient as disciples
as Jesus was in the world. ( 1 John 4:17)
The Bible states that those who bless God’s children will
in turn be blessed or receive favor.To
honor God we needed to bless those people, because they showed us favor.
“Iwillblessthose who bless you, and Iwill curse him
who curses you; and in you all
the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
(Genesis 12:3 NKJV)
In order for us to be the disciples God wants us to be through
blessings, we had to already be blessed in some form in order to carry out the
command.If we are not blessed by God,
we cannot be a blessing to others.As
children of Light the Lord has a responsibility to bless us as our Heavenly
Father.
You Need to Live Blessed
What is the reason we are to live a blessed life?Psalm 67 is the cornerstone of what the Lord
wants His disciples to convey about Him.The message is that He is good and merciful all the time.
God be merciful to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine
upon us, Selah
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.
Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth. Selah
Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You. Then the earth shall yield her
increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear Him.(Psalm 67 NKJV)
Since God is good, other blessings are factored in as
heirs of Christ Jesus.God’s favor is
revealed when His face shines on us.His
reason for doing this is so ALL the earth will come to know His ways.Salvation will be spread throughout the
nations and people will begin to sing praises to God.If we are to follow as true disciples of
Jesus, when we are blessed by Him we tell others about His favor on us which
causes people to turn to God.
We are blessed to do good as Christ did on this
planet.The Apostle John explained that
Jesus did so many good works to glorify the Father that there were too many to
write down.
“And there are also many other things that
Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world
itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.” (John 21:25 NKJV)
When God calls us to do good works we have to be joyfully
blessed to be effective. We cannot bless someone if we are not indeed blessed.It’s great to be a godly witness by being
strong when going through something traumatic, but people need more than that
if they are to be “won” to Christ.Living
a joyfully blessed life is a powerful tool we have as believers if we are to
lead others to Jesus for discipling.
We cannot give what we don’t have and that’s why the
psalmist asks God for His blessings.He
maintains that a blessing on God’s people would cause the rest of the world to
fear Him, acknowledging that He is the One True God.
David gives us the reason for his request for blessings
in his Psalm 119:17 prayer. When we are
bountifully blessed it makes it possible for us to be the blessing we are
called to be.
“Deal bountifully with Your servant that I might live and
keep Your Word.” (Psalm 119:17 NKJV)
The King wanted to do so much to honor God that it would
take the release of His favor to accomplish all that was in his heart.Can you relate to that? I surely can.
The blessing included the joy he needed to accomplish his
work as a servant of God. With so many
negative things that happened in his life, David couldn’t afford to fall into a
depressed state giving satan an open door squashing his desires to please the
Lord.Here is why the blessing of joy is
so important.
The unsaved world can show certain amounts of peace or
joy in their life when they are in control of their environment and things are
going fine.As soon as tragedy hits they
no long maintain that level of control and therefore the peace and joy leave
their spirit.
Christians maintain peace and joy for another reason –
Jesus.Being blessed doesn’t mean we are
without conflict, but that we maintain joy because of the life we have in Jesus
Christ.
A dear friend of mine who was facing a difficult
situation once told me, that either way she wins because she was confident of
the promise for a good end as God’s child. Knowing the truth that God is good is a
reminder that Romans 8:28 will come to pass in our lives.
“And we know that all things work together for good to
those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28 NKJV)
This passage lets us know that not every situation comes from
God (because we have a free will), but because we love Him He will use things that do enter our lives and turn
them around for His purpose so that they speak good of Him and us.
It’s Not Negotiable: God is Good, ALL the Time
Over the years we’ve experience some tragic things, but
have also witnessed others who have as well.The ones that have put their faith in God are thriving and still singing
His praises.They know God is good all
the time and that is not negotiable.They are changing lives and winning souls because God’s face shines on
their submissive hearts.
For those who haven’t trusted in Christ, they were not
able to cope.There isn’t any peace or
joy in their lives, because their faith isn’t based on God but in
themselves.God cannot bless them if they haven’t trusted in Him as their Creator.It’s impossible for them to spread joy
because they cannot share what they don’t possess.
Circumstances don’t change God, He changes circumstances.He is good, has always been good and always
will be good.If sending His Son Jesus to
die on the cross doesn’t convince people of His goodness, mercy and love toward
mankind, nothing will.
Although my husband was experiencing things beyond his
control, he continued to do good works and maintained his joy by spreading joy
to others through humor.He was able to
distribute something that he possessed – joy, which is a gift from the Holy
Spirit (the jury is still out on the humor aspect).
The joy remained because it didn’t come from him, but
God.He believes in the promises of the
Lord for good reports and makes mention of it in public.
“That Your way may be known on
earth,
Your salvation among all nations.” (Psalm 67:2)
Every place we visited said they felt better when we left
(Hmmm … I could take that another way!), because we were able to lift their
spirit in a difficult situation.
As I’m writing this it’s stormy and we’re waiting to
return to the hospital.We aren’t sure
where the next part of our journey will take us, but know that it will be led
with joy knowing God is in control.
This Week’s Challenge:
Lead with Joy
Throughout the week I stayed in prayer and scripture, but
when it came to putting my thoughts down I wasn’t sure what to say.
“Lord, what do you want me to write and share with
others?”In my spirit I heard, “What
have you been experiencing this week?”Gathering my notes it didn’t seem like much, but in each situation we entered
it with the blessing of joy.
Our weekly challenge will take into account how we
approach every situation we face.How
are we leading others as disciples of Christ?Are we blessing others by leading with joy so that others see our God is good?
There isn’t one place in scripture that says Jesus left
them in a mess, feeling bad and in a stupor.Every place that the disciples saw the Lord minister He led the
situation with joy and hope.People left
feeling good, because God had been good to them every time.He set the tone for the encounter by how He
approached it through faith in God the Father’s ability to deliver on His
promises.
As your week progresses take notice of how you lead any
situation. You may not be led to lead
with humor, but you are gifted to lead with something that will turn around a grim
situation.
Are you going into it with joy believing that God will
work things out for His glory and your good?If not, stop and think about why you haven’t been able to maintain your
joy and peace.It could be that you are
being led by your emotions instead of taking them captive. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
God has promised to give His favor to those who love Him
and believe in His power to deliver them out of any problem.He is a good God all the time, and all the
time He wants to bestow blessings on His people.Take hold of that and let Jesus lead you with
the blessing of His exceeding joy.

Every so often I receive messages asking me how I gain
favor from God.It’s not an easy
question to answer actually.People tend
to think that receiving the favor of God always has to do with money when in
reality it doesn’t.
Living in and with favor comes in stages or levels. The
Bible describes it as increasing or “growing in favor” as Christ did.When I asked the Lord to help me to be able
to answer this better, the word “connect” was what He placed in my spirit.

My research began with pondering. Yes, simply thinking on
passages where God expressed and bestowed favor on an individual, situation or
group.Although there are plenty of
examples, I didn’t have to thumb through the Bible past the first book –
Genesis – in which God pointed out where His favor was given, passed over and
lost.
There were several people to whom the Lord had shown
favor, but I dwelled on the accounts having to do with Abram and Lot.As you read through the chapters, it is clear
that something happened in this relationship.How did one man turn out so blessed, and the other completely
ruined?Both knew about God, but only
Abram believed to the point of obedience.
You Can’t Be “Lot”
From the start Abram took his nephew under his wing and
treated him as a son.Everything he had
he shared with Lot.Not having a son of
his own at the time, his brother’s orphan boy was heir to his wealth.
Reading down the pages we see how Abram obeyed God and
left town with his family.Along their
travels he became even wealthier, because the Lord blessed him.When family assets became so large that the
land could no longer support all the livestock, Abram bid his nephew to
separate from him so the families could live in peace.
Lot was glad to take his uncle up on his offer.Looking around he decided to grab what he
felt was the best land, leaving the left overs for Abram.No worries, Abe accepted the decision and let
God do the rest.
As soon as Lot and his family left for the “high” land,
God blessed Abram with more than he could have ever asked or thought.Not only would he gain more land and finally
have an heir, but he was extended favor that would flow down to his
descendants.
If you are a child of God’s that favor is available to
you.Here is the kicker … you can’t be a
Lot.
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
It had been many years since the two parted.Abram (now Abraham) was getting house calls
from God, while his nephew was putting out “house fires” one after
another.What do you think was going
through Lot’s mind now?
Here's a hint, it isn't Sidney Poitier.
The LORD thought so much of His relationship with Abraham
that He wanted to spend time with him. Can you imagine being privy to what God
was doing before it happened?
What would
we do differently if we knew what God was about to do?Wait a sec …Oh, we do … so why do people act
like God isn’t going to do what He said?Unbelief in the Word of God as truth causes mankind to follow the path
of Lot instead of Abraham’s.
God wanted to visit His friend and tell him what was
about to happen in the cities where the people were evil and had disobeyed Him.
Abraham’s nephew lived in one of those cities.
Once the news was out, a debate went back and forth
between the two.God informed His friend
that He was going to destroy the wicked cities.Abraham tried to intercede for Sodom but failed, because God couldn’t
find ten people in the land that believed in Him.However, the Lord kept His word to Abraham in
sparing his nephew’s family. (Genesis chapters 8-20)
Stop Looking Back
The plan of the Lord was carried out with the angels
instructing Lot to gather his family and leave the city. When he confronted his
sons-in-law they laughed at him because they thought he was joking.His lifestyle with following Jehovah was so
changed that they didn’t recognize Lot as a godly man.
Come the next morning the angels literally took Lot, his
wife and two girls by the hand at led them out of the city that was about to be
destroyed.Lot was aware of what the
LORD was going to do to the city, yet the Bible says he still lingered.God was showing Lot’s family favor even
though they had not followed Him as his uncle Abraham did.
Nephew Lot received favor because of who he was connected
to despite his present way of life. He realized this also, but still had the
nerve to go against what God said in his departure.
“So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside
(the city), that he said, Escape for your life!Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain.Escape to the mountains, lest you be
destroyed.”
This is where Lot made another mistake that took him out
of God’s favor and protection.
“Then Lot said to them, Please, no my lords! Indeed now,
your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy
which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the
mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die.
See now, this city (Zoar) is near enough to flee to, and
it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my
soul shall live.”
Looking back when God says look forward will put a stop to all your plans. Luke 17:32
God was willing to save Lot and his family because his
servant Abraham asked it of Him.The
Lord was also willing to let Lot make his own decision that went against better
judgment.
Sometimes we settle for second
best when God has a much better plan for our lives.We keep looking back at things the Lord is taking
us away from, which proves our trust isn’t genuine.
(If you're doing this, it would be a good time to pause and ask God for His forgiveness.)
Trusting the Lord and believing that His plans for us are
good is a big part to our gaining greater favor.Our eyes should be fixed on him, not looking
at what could have been or what was.
Apparently Lot wasn’t willing to trust the direction the
angels pointed his family to for safety.He believed in fear and not faith.If we do not believe that God’s way is the best, our fear will always
cancel out our faith and His favor.
“And he said to him (Lot), “See, I have favored you
concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which
you have spoken.Hurry, escape there.
For I cannot do anything, until you arrive there.” (Genesis 19:21 NKJV)
At one time Lot was connected to Abraham and his God. We
know that based on his reaction when the angels made their visitation to Sodom.
Something changed, something became more important.
God had blessed Lot along with his uncle and they became
very rich.Sadly Lot didn’t know what to
do with his wealth and followed after unrighteousness. He fell out of favor
when he took his eyes off God.
Lot made bad choices not staying in relationship with the
Lord. The place he begged God to “flee to” turned out to be a place where he
lived in continual fear.Consequently,
he lost everything including his wife, and ended up living out his days in a
cave.
Connecting with the favor of God isn’t for ourselves, but
so that we can continue the work of the Lord. All else will be lost. Lot’s life
story is a good reminder of becoming disconnected with the One who distributes
blessings, mercy and favor.
Staying in the FOG
People say that if you want to get rich, hang out with
rich people.There is a flaw in their
belief.Hanging out with people who have
wealth won’t make you rich.You have to
Do Something! In other words, you have to be willing to do what they did.
It’s the same with accessing Heaven.If you want to understand the F.O.G. (favor of
God) you need to be hooked up to people who have it.
You will notice that those people all have
something in common with Abraham.Besides spending time fellowshipping with the Lord, they are considered
righteous friends because they believe Him.
“And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham
believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called
the friend of God.” (James 2:23 NKJV)
There are a lot of people who say they want to hang out with God,
but they still do their own thing and don’t believe there will be
consequences.That means they don’t believe
their “friend”.Who would want to share
something with anyone who doesn’t believe a word they say?Not me.
Something we can be sure of is when God chooses to include
a person in His plans (as with Abraham), it effects more than just that
person.His favor follows those who
totally give their heart to the Lord, because of the responsibility they now
bear in carrying out the will of God.
What I’ve gained from this particular study isn’t so much
about Abraham’s walk with the Lord, but the activity of the Lord in his
life.It’s something we should all
strive for in building our relationship with God.
Sorry, you’ve been disconnected.
Receiving the favor of God isn’t always wealth, but could
be protection, deliverance or anything like we read with Lot. It comes in
various levels (amounts) based on where you are in your faith, belief,
obedience and fellowship with the Lord.
We have learned that we can disconnect from God and His
favor through greed, fear and unbelief.Those things will lead us to a land we don’t want to go to after all.
This Week’s Challenge:
Re-connect with Favor
In order to understand the plan of God, we have to
understand His character and nature.The
only way to do that is to spend time with our friend in His word and those who have
walked with God by faith.
The call of God on our lives should be our motivation for
doing anything, and that brings me to our challenge this week.It will have us re-connecting with friends of
faith who have walked in the blessings of the Lord, but before we do that there
may be some things we need to change in our life style.
First we’ll take a look at what activities we’re
participating in on a regular basis, and stop doing things that take us out of
fellowship with the Lord and others of like faith.
Remember to seek the Lord concerning matters,
otherwise you may miss something.Give
yourself a break here and let God help you “work out your salvation” as it says in Philippians 2:12. Stop looking back dwelling on guilt or the
past, and focus on the fact that you are forgiven.
Next connect with mature believers who are experiencing
the hand of God on their lives. It won’t be hard to spot them.Don’t limit your quest to those you know; do
some research.You may find articles,
blogs, videos, books or broadcasts that will be of assistance.If you don’t know where to look, try reading
some of my archive articles for a start. Each one has a resource to assist you in growing in God's favor by faith.
We’re going to watch, listen and learn what the
person(s)/people did to receive or hear from God.Do you see the pattern in their lives that
reveals God?
Unless we see things how God does in an individual, we
won’t be able to receive the blessing.There is a purpose for God allowing us to connect to His favor. It will
bring Him glory, accomplish His plan and is eternal.
“The LORD of host has sworn, saying, surely, as I have
thought,
so it shall come
to pass, and as I have purposed,
so it shall stand.” (Isaiah 14:24 NKJV)
You can receive God’s favor.When you continue in fellowship with the
Lord, you will hear from Him, because He knows you want His will to be
accomplished in your life.
Are you a friend of God? What does He call you? What do you call Him?
God will share with His friends things that others want
to know, but don’t. Staying connected to favor is to believe Jesus, the One who
calls you friend.
