The Other Side of the Fence

Are you beginning to get unsettled under the current circumstances of this global pandemic?  If so, then jot down these notes with a pen or pencil ...

The grass is always browner on the other side of the fence!

You read that right - BROWNER!

I get it … from an emotional view your world has really been rocked and shaken.  Some may be getting pretty antsy not having patience and you’re ready to get your regular or "normal" life back.

What looks like is going great for others, may not exactly be the truth.  In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s what the United States President Trump often refers to as “fake news”, and guess who’s dishing out that nasty gossip.

If you said the media, you’d be wrong!  It’s satan, the founder of lies, doom and gloom.  He's not shy when it comes to spreading anything that will kill, steal or destroy and he'll use fear as his #1 deceptive tool.

Right now, things in your life may not be looking that great with the challenges you never thought you would experience, yet they're here.

A quick word of encouragement.  Take a look at what's happening on your side of the "fence".  In other words, what’s really happening in your life, inside the walls of your dwelling and on your property?  Have you gone from faith to fear and can't see anything good coming out of this mess?

Let's do a little research shall we? ( ... Uh, you know that "we" really means you right?)  When you go out into your yard or surrounding area, is there any green on your side of a dividing fence or boundary? I mean even a hint that something is trying to grow and burst forth?

Have you found anything?  If not, you're not looking hard enough so keep at it.  Something is there, I'm sure of it!

If so, you are blessed with water - provision.  You know - FAVOR from God for new things that change what was there into something different.  Now take that image and apply it to the overall picture, which happens to be your current conditions in life.

What things are going well for you during this "brown wave" the world is experiencing?  Come on, get down on your knees and prayerfully look for the "blade" of grass that God is watering for you.  There's evidence that He is right there and has things covered!

The Blade of Grass is Hope Alive!

Ahhh, you're beginning to see it aren't you?  The other side of the fence isn't looking green after all.  In fact, it's down right brown,  not even worth a glance any more!

You see, God hasn't forgotten where you live!  Forget about what was, it's nothing compared to what God is going to do.  Focus on what will be coming - VICTORY!

God is making a way in the wilderness and about to give favor that you never experienced in the past.  Jesus says, only believe  ... it's your time for favor!

Stop worrying; God is not only for you, He's right there beside you!  Get excited and celebrate what's happening on your side of the fence!

Things are changing,  Something new is happening in your life.  Green is everywhere, don't you see it?

"For I am about to do something new.
See I have already begun, do you not see it?
I will make a pathway through the wilderness,
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland."
(Isaiah 43:19 NLT)

Put your confidence and trust solely in the Lord.  God will give you the favor to overcome any obstacle the devil tries to throw your way.

Learn to recognize what God is doing in your own "backyard" and not in someone else's life, as in - the other side of the fence.   His favor for you isn't over there!

Be grateful that He is in control working things out for good to those that love Him; and if you are a believer in Christ Jesus, you are included in that outcome!

"Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace,
that we may receive mercy and find grace (unmerited favor)
to help (us) in the time of need."
(Hebrews 4:16 ESV, emphasis mine)

Don’t lose heart, but draw close to His throne of grace to receive the mercy and Daily Favor just when you need it.

Until next time, God's favor is on your side!

“There is daily favor at My throne of grace.”
- Jesus Christ

Discerning Favor: Part 2

“What it could have been” … that’s the line that kept rolling through his head, over and over as he watched the rescue team go into action.

I can relate to how hard it was for my husband to change his thinking while still staring at the accident that unfolded before his eyes.  You too?

We’ve pretty much asked that question to an extent at some time in our lives.  Our mind takes us through various horrific scenarios, curious of what things might have been depending on the circumstances.

No wonder we have difficulty discerning whether or not we’ve made the right decisions.  It’s not always as obvious as was the case in our story.  Without the prompting of the Holy Spirit this would be reading a whole lot differently.

Listening for Discerning Favor

With so many officials and the medical team scrambling around on the scene, wisdom led that it was time to back off and let them do their job.  It was when my husband returned to the car that I learned what had happened through his phone call.  I was still on the line as he described what was going on a few feet in front him.

At 8:27 a.m. (only 36 minutes after the horrible accident) the fire department with the jaws of life, cut the 80+ year old gentleman out of his vehicle.  That’s right, the other veterinarian was the owner of the establishment and still actively working (and driving)!

Praise God he was able to move making it easier to assist him from his humongous four door GMC truck.  A few seconds earlier our car would have been squashed like a bug!  Aww … but it didn’t happen because of God’s discerning favor was imparted to ears that listened.

That frightful morning my husband disregarded his own feelings and allowed the Spirit of God to guide his actions, leading him away from danger.  He reminded me that it wasn’t what he wanted to do, but he put his trust in what God was revealing to his spirit (not audible).

Although others were involved, God honored my prayer covering the vet’s life and those involved.  When we put our trust in the Lord, He is our refuge, strength and help in times of trouble, because He is present over the entire situation. (Psalm 46:1)

The shield of favor and protection as in Psalm 12:5 and Psalm 91 was on my husband through prayer, so those surrounding him received the same blessing.  That’s how God dealt with things that morning and another reason why we need to be cautious of those we spend time with on a regular basis.

Seek and Find

Every day when we wake it’s a gift from God for new beginnings, new life, new mercies and new favor waiting for those who choose to fellowship with the Lord.  If we miss that intimate time with God, we cannot possibly discern when He’s giving direction to a situation.

Children of God already have His favor because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross. The problem is that not everyone understands this blessing of favor (grace), nor do they know how to access it through discernment.

Scripture teaches that whoever finds God through Jesus receives His favor.  So, if you aren’t in the habit of “finding” God (spending time with Him), there isn’t any favor that awaits you.

Favor through Fellowship

Learning to seek discernment from the Lord in continual fellowship is vital.  Make it a point to arrange everything in your life around doing the will of God by staying close to Him.

The Bible tell us in Proverbs, that whoever (that means anyone) finds God will receive or obtain (get, secure, acquire) His favor in this life and eternally, including blessings beyond the spiritual nature.

“For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD.”
(Proverbs 8:35 ESV)

When someone believes in Jesus as Savior, they are counted as “Righteous” in His eyes.  Not because of anything they did or can do, but because of what Jesus did.  With believe comes the gift of favor that surrounds an individual as if it were a shield barrier around them or encompassing them through the mercy of God.

“For You, O Lord, will bless the Righteous (the saved); with favor You will surround him/her as a shield.” (Psalm 5:12 NKJV emphasis mine)

At times it may appear that God is nowhere on the scene, but take heart my friend, He is always with you.  Yes, the Holy Spirit may tweak your plans or even totally change them, but it’s for a good reason.

Don’t give in to fear no matter how things may look at the time; God is working things out for you good so trust Him to do that.  He will lead those to safety that seek His counsel and follow it immediately.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with My eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8)

You may not want to hear this, but I need to tell the truth. There is another side to all of this.  For those who refuse to turn to the Lord – the Bible tells us that God will refuse to show favor to those who reject His gift of salvation.

“When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come (gather them) and make fires with them.  For this is a people without understanding (or discernment), so their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.”
 (Isaiah 27:11 NIV emphasis mine)

I urge you to take delight in doing God’s will so that you continually walk in His Daily (shield of) Favor!

“As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.  For He says, in the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”  2 Corinthians 6:1-2 NIV.
(See Isaiah 49:8 also)

If you haven’t received the gift of salvation, your day of God’s favor has come – today!  (Read how here.)

This Week’s Challenge:
Discerning When to Stop and Wait.

The key to this entire situation for my husband was his discerning the Holy Spirit telling him to stop and wait before acting.  He didn’t know why, but just knew something wasn’t right, so he didn’t move forward with his plans.

If you have that “strange” feeling that something doesn’t seem right, it’s probably the Holy Spirit trying to lead you in a different direction.  Even if you’re not sure at first, stop and wait for a period of time.  Ask the Lord if He is directing your steps in the situation and discern if it’s God, fear or the devil giving the instructions.

“Can you hear it?
The gentle voice of the Spirit …
There’s no reason to fear it.”

“God is our refuge and strength, a (an abundantly available help)
very present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear …”
(Psalm 46:1-2a NKJV)

God will never lead you in a direction against His will and Word.  That is another reason why it is important you know the scriptures.

When your spirit is at peace over the decision you will know when to make a move forward or not.  Never proceed without getting the go ahead from the Lord.  There are times when He will tell you to do something and you may not feel qualified or ready, but that is another entire situation when God is trying to stretch your faith.

So how did the story end?  Although the vehicles involved were totaled, the huge size of the doctor’s truck was able to take the blow from the other vehicle, where mine would have been crushed!

One might find It hard to believe the outcome of this after seeing the evidence, but by the grace of God the other driver walked away from the crash without a scratch.  As for the veterinarian, he was taken to the hospital for examination and only had a minor cut on his hand.  He was fine and has since gone back to work.

The enemy didn’t win and the song in my heart that morning would ring out even louder!  God gave us another day full of new mercy because of His amazing grace – unmerited favor on those who love and seek Him.

This is my prayer for you …

“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment.  That you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”
(taken from Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV)

This is the Day by Phil Wickham

Until next time, daily seek God’s discerning favor!

“I will give discerning favor to those who seek Me.”

Discerning Favor

Still lying in bed, I joyfully raise my arms to praise the Lord in song for His new mercy in giving me another day.

“… This is the day, the day when life begins.”

It’s 5 a.m. and every day I wake to this Phil Wickham tune on a radio broadcast.  Already my heart is full of joy in anticipation of the favor God has set before me for the activities of my day.

Hubby will be up soon, as he will prepare to bring two rescue kitties to the vet clinic.  Oh yeah … it’s going to be a full day, and because we do not know what it will bring, we already prayed for discernment on the choices that will have to be made.

“Whoever gives thought to the word (or to a matter) will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.  The wise of heart is called discerning and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness (learning).” (Proverbs 16:20-21 ESV)

Prepare to Wait

It was 7:51 a.m. when my husband called for the second time since leaving the house.  I was listening to a bible teaching on procrastination and finishing what you start.  The message fit in perfectly with what we've been learning here on Daily Favor for this year's 2020 vision.

Answering the phone, I expected to hear him say they were ready for the kitties to go into surgery.  Instead, I could hear trembling in his voice.  Fear started to arise anticipating what would come out of his mouth next.

"It's going to be a while." The tone of his voice sent a weird alarm through my being not knowing what else he was about to tell me.

Hubby had left the house a little past 7:00 am with the kitties who were scheduled to be neutered.  Not living far from the clinic, he had already checked in and then returned to the car because the lobby was so packed.  A few minutes earlier hubby phoned to let me know how long of a wait we had before it was their turn.  When it was time, he would go back inside with the fur babies.

An emergency C-section for a dog and two other cats were scheduled ahead of him.  They said it would be about 9 a.m., so he was prepared to wait until the designated time.

Figuring hubby only had an hour I suggested he relax and get something to eat at a fast food place right around the corner.  Not being particularly hungry he thought maybe I’ll just go sit inside and eat something light.

The Value of Discerning Wisdom

“My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands with you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her (wisdom) as silver, and search for her (wisdom) as hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”  (passage taken from Proverbs 2:1-5 NKJV)

My husband hung up the phone and began to back the car out of the parking space.  He was about to leave the clinic’s lot when all of a sudden, he felt an urgency in his spirit.  It was the Holy Spirit giving him wisdom, understanding and discernment to “stop - don't go".

Not really wanting to stop, he felt he had to and immediately pressed the brake to the floor.

Wondering what was wrong he sat and waited with the car idling.

That morning there was a heavy fog that seemed to get worse as the sun rose.  When he left the house, the thick mist was settling over the horizon making visibility nearly impossible except for a few feet in front of you.

What hubby didn’t realize is that although a natural fog from the environment was falling over the area, a spiritual fog – the favor of God was about to fall on him and change his direction.

Sitting in the car he heard a crash followed by a loud crunch. Looking in the rearview mirror he witnessed the other veterinarian coming to work have an accident.  The doctor’s truck was flipped on its side, sliding into the parking lot like a bolt of lightning where hubby would have been if he hadn’t paused those few discerning seconds before the incident.

Apparently, the doctor was pulling into the parking lot when another driver broadsided him sending his vehicle spinning in the air.  Now I understand why hubby's voice was trembling so.

Misfortune Happens to Them All

“Whatever you find to do, do it well because where you are going - the grave - there will be no working, thinking, knowing or wisdom.

I turned and witnessed something else under the sun: the race does not always go to the swift, the battle is not always won by the strong, bread does not always fill the table of the wise, wealth does not always accrue to the skillful, and favor is not always granted to the knowledgeable;  but time and misfortune happen to them all.

A person can’t possibly know when his time will come. Like fish caught in a cruel net or birds trapped in a snare, without warning the unexpected happens, and people are caught up in an evil time.”
(taken from Ecclesiastes 9:10-12 VOICE)

Quickly hubby re-parked the car in a different location and ran over to the truck.  Being the first one there he went to the windshield and called out,

“Doc ... are you alright?”
With relief he heard the doctor’s voice, “Yeah … open the door.”

There was no way the door could be opened; it was crushed!  Remaining calm my husband wisely gave words of comfort and instruction not letting on the severity of the situation.

“Help is coming, try to shut off the engine.”  Stretching as far as he could, the vet followed instructions.

By now a crowd in panic began running out of the clinic having heard the impact from inside the building, including the other vet who was already up to his elbows in his own chaos.  With so many now gathering, hubby backed off and let the officials get to work.

Looking around the state police were already on the scene.  Having been a few cars behind the doctor that morning, they witnessed the whole thing and notified the first responders team within a minute of the accident.

Fifteen minutes later the crew arrived and broke out the jaws of life equipment working as fast as they could.  The paramedics were on their way.

What appeared to be a regular day turned into a race against time to save lives.  Without warning the unexpected happened just like the scriptures say … misfortune happens to them all.

The truck in in the outgoing lane exactly where hubby would have been!
He was about to drive right where the fireman is standing.
It rolled over in that lane.  The man is still in the vehicle!
You can see the conditions of the incident.

What It Could Have Been

Getting back into the car (actually that day he was driving my small Dodge or “little dude” as he calls her and not his “tanker”), hubby was literally shaking thinking about what had happened.  If he followed through with leaving to go get that quick breakfast our car would have been hit … and, well, you know how he felt and why his voice was trembling when he phoned.

"What it could have been … but it wasn't!  Stop, don't go there ... it didn't happen. Thank You Lord, thank You, thank You, thank You!”

Over and over the devil kept playing out the incident in his head; he had to take those thoughts captive immediately.  When my husband began to feel fear, he stopped it in its tracks and spoke truth over the situation.  The devil is a liar!

“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NKJV)

Listening to his quivering voice, I stayed on the phone as he “virtually walked” me through the situation that was going on a few feet from where he was sitting in our car.  The details were quite alarming, but yet God gave me peace about the entire episode.

Applying Wisdom is Discernment

Hearing what God had done I couldn’t stop thanking the Lord for keeping my husband safe, and for His Holy Spirit who gives discernment with wisdom when we ask for it.  This is how I distinguish information on such a matter:

Discernment is being able to apply the wisdom and knowledge of God by understanding what to do and when to act.

Perhaps James the brother of Jesus Christ says it a little better.

“If any of you (any believer that is) lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5 emphasis mine)

Unfortunately, too many people don’t understand or neglect the fact that favor is a blessing tied directly to wisdom from the Lord.  Without an active relationship with God, emotions get the best of us and we get caught up in the stress or anxiety of the situation.

When we allow feeling to get the best of us our decisions often turn out wrong, irrational and illogical because we aren’t calm enough to take in all the facts that surround us.  We forget that as children of the Living God we have His favor working on our behalf if we stop, wait and act in His timing.

Sometimes things happen so fast, like in this case, that there is no time to pray or flip open the Bible and search out “what would Jesus do” here.  We need wisdom and God’s favor to discern the answer in an instant.

The Psalm 91 Promise

From the time my husband left the house I was in prayer.  Upon checking the time, it was at the very moment of the accident I was praying over and thanking God for the veterinarians.

The veterinarian’s truck was hit broadside, smack center on the passenger doors. The other driver did not see his vehicle due to the intense fog.

If my husband had finished his turn less than a minute earlier, he would have been hit on the front drivers' side of our small car.  The outcome would have been very different, had it not been for the Psalm 91 promise.

“Like a bird protecting its young, God will cover you with His feathers, will protect you under His great wings; His faithfulness will form a shield (of favor as Psalm 5:12 states) around you, a rock-solid wall to protect you.” (Psalm 91:4 VOICE)

I wish there was a way to impart to you how very important it is that we stay in fellowship with God so we can hear and be led by His Spirit.  His favor shield is there to steer us away from harm and into the good things He has for those who diligently seek Him.

Do you remember our lesson on the Road to Troas back in January where God changed Paul’s plans suddenly, but later he was able to resume them?  The same thing happened in this case.  There was a small delay in plans, but in the end all went well.

When the Holy Spirit is leading you away from something familiar, don’t argue over the decision but gladly follow.  It could save your life!

“These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”  (1 Corinthians 2:13-14 NKJV)

The Key to Discerning Favor

In the book of James chapter 2 verse 23, it reveals the key to receiving discerning favor from God.  It’s through a close relationship with Him that God imputes wisdom for discernment in any situation when we listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, even when we don’t fully understand the instructions.

As a friend of God’s, we have privileges and insight that other’s do not possess.  We read through the scriptures that Abraham had such a close relationship with God that He included him in His plans (see Genesis 18:23-33).  I want that kind of relationship, don’t you?

The good news is that if you are a believer in Christ Jesus you have that same access to God.  On the other hand, if you aren’t, you can if you receive Jesus into your heart through salvation by faith.

Today could be your day, you know as I sang ... the day where life begins for you as a child of God or who knows, in an instant without warning the unexpected may happen!  Remember what Solomon said, "misfortune happens to them all."  Are you prepared?

The thing is, even though all believers have access to the favor of God, it takes spiritual discernment to recognize when it is being activated or how to apply it giving you an advantage over the enemy.  If you aren’t actively engaged in fellowship with the Lord, you will “almost always” miss out on the favor of God.

Tune in next week to find out what happened as we continue our lesson on Discerning Favor.

Until next time, practice the key to discerning favor!

“Have you not discerned that I want a relationship with you?”
- Jesus Christ
