Digging the Good Life

I cannot help it ... spring is my favorite season of the year.  Watching God's creation come to life when all looks lost is something that gets me excited!  The fact that God in His wonderous glory gives us a fresh beginning every spring increases my faith and brings hope for better things ahead.

"O LORD, how manifold are Your works!  In wisdom You have made them all.  The earth is full of Your possessions." (Psalm 104:24)

This is not the typical DFB article I know, but think of it, no matter what is happening in our lives, God's favor on mankind is renewed daily through the process of seed time and harvest gardening!  So, let us dig into some good things He has taught me on this subject.

Setting Aside April for Gardening

"The LORD God planted a garden eastward of Eden, and there He put the man He had formed." (Genesis 2:8)

The world has been enjoying the great reward of gardening since God's own Garden of Eden.  However, since President Ronald Reagan was in office (1986), the United States of America has been giving a big shout out for the so called "hobbyist", celebrating all aspects of gardening in the month of April.

This month I would like to encourage you to take time to enjoy and appreciate the great outdoors by getting out there to "smell the roses" and everything else that is in bloom - literally!  Not only can it be loads of fun, it can do wonders for your emotional and physical health.  Make it a point to discover more about Life in God's Garden.

20 Things to Do for Joyful Gardening

Although it is hard for me to imagine, not everyone loves getting their hands dirty when kneeling to dig a hole for springtime planting (or any planting for that matter).  The good news is, gardening or loving gardens does not always have to do with the actual work of planting.  There are a number of ways to enjoy the beauty of God's handiwork that can be just as rewarding as the physical act of gardening.  Consider some of these ideas for a change.

1.  Schedule time to visit local nurseries, garden centers or greenhouses.  Plan a day at a botanical garden to watch birds, animals, and insects in their natural environment.

2.  Learn about native plants in your area and which plants, trees and shrubs do well there.

3.  If you have a garden club or community college in your town, take a course to expand your gardening knowledge.  Learn which plants do well with others to attract pollinators.  Find out what soil is best to use, organic gardening strategies, sun or shade plants and planting zone guidelines along with watering tips that will save you time.

4.  Have a seed, bulb, or plant swapping party; we have done this for ladies' events at our church and it was a huge success!  I absolutely loved getting plants I never thought about adding to my garden.  Plus, you can get friendly advice on grouping of plants for patios, porches, or container gardening.

Get Involved

5.  One of my favorite things to do is participate in the County Fair each year.  I've been blessed to have done this for many, many years, and besides winning prizes or ribbons, I have made so many friends who are fantastic gardeners!  They have taught me so much by sharing great gardening tips that have been invaluable, plus it always gives me an opportunity to witness by sharing the gospel message of God's garden.

6.  Another fun thing to do is have a pre-garden party with friends and neighbors for ideas that could be introduced in your own special garden.  It is good to "dig" into different ways of doing things that could help your garden go from good to great without having to pay a professional.  When the season is at its peak, invite them back to see the results of your labor of love!

7.  Look for ways your garden space could get a facelift this season that takes little or no money and see where it takes you.  Use your imagination; it can be anything you want.

For example, I have created a special place in my garden to have tea time with God!  The space is a simple picnic table with an umbrella and a few plants on top, located in a shady area surrounded by things I love to look at in the yard.

It is a quiet little place where I can sit, write, read, and sip on a beverage while spending time with the Master Gardener throughout the entire year.   Even if I am not working in the yard, I spend time "at the table" relaxing in God's great outdoors.

8.  Grow something new!  Each year I pick one new plant that I know nothing about (but is in my growing zone) to live in my garden.  It can be a bush, flower, shrub, tree, annual or perennial - does not matter, just that it intrigues me!

This has been so refreshing to watch how it develops over time.  A few years ago, I picked a perennial groundcover plant called pink "pin head" (aka pink knotweed); a vinery plant with the tiniest soft pink flowers.  I figured every family has one, so why not my garden! (LOL)

Friends, this turned out to be one of my favorite plants and each year I winter it over in my shed.  Another success for me was the Martha Washington geranium that I purchased at our local Ace Hardware Supply Company.

9.  Plant a "memorial" tree for a specific purpose.  Over the years I have planted trees for many reasons, signifying something or someone special.   There have been a few for those who have left us, but mostly they have been for good things that happened in my life or someone else's.

The first time I planted a tree was when I was twelve years old.  Our family had moved into a new home and the yard needed landscaping.   My father worked several jobs and one way I could spend time with him was to garden.  He chose a special place outside my bedroom window and together we planted this skinny little tree.  As I grew so did the tree ... I loved that tree!  It was a memory I will never forget, and why I continue to make new memories in planting trees.

When we moved the wonderful women who owned the school where I taught gifted us with four flowering Bradford pear trees.  Most people say to avoid planting these trees because they can overtake an area, but we had nothing at all on our land at the time.  We wanted fast growing trees, and they were in an area that was perfect for us.

Those trees were points of contact for me to pray for them.  I still do so to this day!

Did you know a memorial tree is also biblical?  It is mentioned only a few times in the bible, and it is not planted on behalf of the person but for future generations.  The shade of the mighty tree would be for others to enjoy, not the planter.  When Abraham planted that specific tree, he was saying that he believed God when He told him he would father many nations.  It was an act of faith that his "seed" would continue on for many generations.

"Abraham planted a tamarisk tree (salt cedar) in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God." (Genesis 21:33)

Try planting a memorial tree not only in your own yard, but perhaps one at a church, a park, school, or community garden.  Celebrate life and events with something that is living and create an environment that gives joy to those that look on it.

10.  Move it!  One way to keep the spark alive in gardening experiences is to move things around like you do in your own home.  Just because something worked in one area does not mean it has to stay in that same place.  In fact, switching out containers, moving plants to new locations (that are still suitable for the plant) and rearranging outdoor furniture can make the entire setting look totally different.

11.  People have no problem with the layered look when it comes to clothing style, but don't even think of it for their gardens. Stacking pots brings a whole new dimension that is stunning to typical planting.

Practically anything will work, and it does not even have to be a pot.  I often use old watering cans, disguarded vacuum containers, odd shaped items, etc. that stand out from normal vessels used for planting.

Place a slightly smaller pot (or container) in the center as if you were building a tier like a cake.  Put tall plants in the center and trailing plants in the pot.  Start with a large base pot and fill it as normal with soil in the lower section.  Try using various sized pots both wide and tall, as well as different textured containers.

12.  Color my world!  To pump up the color in rather dull areas I used pastel pots the color of the rainbow on my shed steps.  On raised beds I have used all dark green or pastel blue colors. This works great for my herb beds especially because they are mostly green.

13.  Light the way around your garden with solar lights.  By placing them directly in the flower pots it changes the look of the garden at night.   Lighting the pots themselves has helped us for early morning and night gardening, which is something I do on a regular basis.

14.  Sit on it!  No matter where you are in your yard sometime you need a place to rest your tired bones, and chairs are not always available.  Instead of scattering a ton chairs around the yard, why not use other things for sitting?  Create seating areas with giant boulders or rocks; use smooth boards threaded through a few blocks.  Repurpose odd milk crates, build a bench with wooden pallets.  We have even used cut down trees for large groups while singing around a campfire.

Add Movement

15.  Gardens can be beautiful whether they have flowers or not, but what really brings life to the whole garden experience is movement.  Consider adding bird feeders and a form of water such as bird baths or fountains.  They do not have to be expensive, but add things that attract the right kind of birds to the type of garden you desire.

16.  Do not neglect bright colors that attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies when selecting the plants you want.  Not all flowers attract pollinators.  Bees and butterflies like blues, yellows, purples, pinks and white.  They also need water (even bees) so consider that in your layout as well.

Butterflies love coneflowers and this perennial comes in an assortment of colors that will go perfectly in any setting.  The beloved hummingbird on the other hand has many favorites, such as purple Bee Balm, sunflowers, lantana, foxglove, and catmint.

Team Work Makes the Dream Garden Work

17.  You've worked so hard in achieving the perfect garden, but something keeps eating away at your beauties!  There is an easy fix for most of those issues that does not require sprays or harmful chemicals.

Plant insect "repellent flowers" with your veggies or other flowering plants.  "Team work" your plants for a more beautiful, pest free garden.

For the most part I plant basil and marigolds with almost all the food plants including other herbs.  Team up your containers with your favorite items by adding these insect repellent plants: basil, marigold, lavender, catnip/cat mint, any mint, rosemary, sage, lemon balm or eucalyptus to name a few.

Know as You Grow

18.  As you try new things in your garden, take pictures of the various stages of new plants growth to see how well things did in the location you planted.  The old saying a picture is worth a thousand words is certainly true when it comes to good and productive gardens.

19.  Take lots of notes and write things down on a designated calendar specifically for gardening.  Jot down anything that will help you for next year's gardening, especially when it comes to fertilizing, watering, and pest control.  If you know what worked well and what did not, it will make growing experiences more enjoyable.

Knowing the facts as you grow helps you become a smarter gardener.  I do this, and find it to be valuable, especially in rotating plants for the following season.

Planting Seed in Others

20.  I think this is my favorite gardening in the long run.  Not everyone likes to garden or can garden for some reason or another, but everyone who does enjoy it can do it for someone else.

I first learned about the love of sowing into others through gardening from a neighbor of ours when we first got married.  An older gentleman had a beautiful yard and shared his experiences of planting through gifting Hosta plants to me as he divided his perennials.  This is something I found needed doing a lot, which led to opportunities to become a regular plant giver myself!

In my research on caring for the gifted plantsl I discovered that those beautiful Hostas come in around 70 species and about 3,000 varieties.  How fascinating!  From there the love of planting in someone else's yard or life has blossomed.

Over the years on Mother's Day, we have gifted flowers by planting them for widows or senior citizens to enjoy.  Other times we have dressed up a few mailboxes and front yards for neighbors who have not the time or ability to plant.

There are so many ways to plant in someone's life, why can't it be literal?  We demonstrate the love of God when we sow into people, and it causes His favor to be released into ours in ways we could not imagine.

Most of all, have fun sharing the experience by gardening with those you love, being sure to include them in your plans.  Make room for new ideas and provide garden space for everyone to nurture their own green thumb.  Let this be a year of gardening that everyone will remember with joy.

Finally, what kinds of plans have you envisioned for your garden and yard in "digging" the good life?  Is it listed on your vision board and is God included in it?

Share your creative ideas and photos with us in the comments section below or on social media, and dig into the favored life God wants you to have!  Happy gardening friends!

Are You Prepared for the Second Appearance?

 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CN141863?tag=hubacct4139-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1

With Easter now over, it is easy to forget all that transpired for Christ to live, die and be resurrected.  However, the story of Jesus does not end at the cross.

Throughout the scriptures we are told of the return of Jesus Christ.  We prepare to celebrate Christmas and Easter, but how often do you think about His arrival much less prepare for it?

Matthew chapter 25 of the Bible teaches us how to stay on the lookout for Christ's return by staying aware of the signs around us.  (verses 1-25)  According to scriptures, it is not hard to see that we are indeed living in the last days before Christ will return for His people.

We are to pray for believers to return to Jesus and tell others of Him imminent appearing.  Do not be caught off guard, but remember the example given in the lesson of the ten virgins found in Hebrews 9:27-28.

"...and just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes (face-to-face) judgment, so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people.  He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for His (His return). (NLT)

Are you prepared for that coming day and have you told anyone that Jesus will return just as He told the first disciples He would rise from the grave?

With the Easter season fresh on the minds of the world, it is a great time to witness and share the message of salvation favor!  You can do that by simply sharing DFB with one person each day this week!

Until next time, Favored Blessings

Walking through Holy Week Scriptures

Follow along with is through the events and teachings for Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday.

Walking through Holy Week Scriptures

Palm Sunday – The Triumphal Entry of Jesus

Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a borrowed donkey as the crowd welcomed Him saying “Hosanna” while placing their cloaks and palm branches on the ground before Him.

Monday – Jesus Cleans the Temple

Matthew 21:13-22; Mark 11:15-19; Luke 19:45-48; John 2:13-17

Jesus drove out those who bought and sold at the temple where He over tuned the tables.

Tuesday – Mount of Olives Discourse

Matthew 21: 23-24:52

Jesus taught in the temple using parables.

Wednesday – Preparing for the Passover Meal

The scriptures do not tell us what happened on Wednesday that week, but we do know others things were transpiring such as the preparing of the Passover (Seder) meal duties and the betrayal of the disciple Judas.

Matthew 24:14-15

Judas betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver; the price is discussed in the Old Testament about the 10 plagues on Egypt from the exit of the Israelites in Exodus chapters 7-12.

Thursday (Maundy Thursday) – The Last Supper, Gethsemane Prayer and the Betrayal Kiss

Matthew 26:17-75; Mark 14:12-72; Luke 22:7-62; John 13:1-38

Jesus washed the feet of the disciples and celebrated the Passover.  This is where He gave the meaning of the meal establishing the first communion and giving the new commandment.

Although Passover is not a commandment for Christians but began for the Old Testament Jewish nation, it is still observed among the Jews and many believers as a fulfillment of the prophecy of Christ Jesus.

Later that evening He went to the garden of Gethsemane where He was arrested by the Roman soldiers following the betrayal of Judas.

The term known as “Maundy” originates from the Latin work “mandatum” meaning commandment, referring to the new commandment in John 13:34 that Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper.  “Love one another as I have loved you, that you love one another."

Good Friday - Trail, Cruxifixion, Burial

Matthew 27:1-61; Mark 15:1-47; Luke 22:63-23:56; John 18:28-19:37

Jesus was crucified ona cross in Golgotha known as the Place of the Skull, which was located outside of Jerusalem, and then  laid  in a tomb.

Golgotha means place of the skull in Aramaic, and is Latin for calcaria.  It is translated in English as Calvary, the place where Jesus was crucified.

Saturday - The Tomb

Matthew 27:62-66; Mark 16:1; Luke 23:56; John 19:40

Jesus' body was in a tomb, but He also went to Hell and took the keys to death from satan.  He conquered death, hell and the grave. (Read Ephesians 4:8-9)

Jesus said, "I am He that lives, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore.  Amen, and have the keys of Hell and death." (Revelation 1:18)

Resurrection Sunday (Easter) - He is Risen!

Matthew 18:1-13; Mark 16:1-14; Luke 14:1-49; John 20:1-23

The rock at the entrance of the tomb where Jesus laid was rolled back.  An angel told the news of Christ's resurrection declaring He is not here but has risen from the dead just like He said would happen.

Faith to Open Doors of Favor: Part 2

In part one of this teaching, we learned of a woman who had been sick for twelve years.  The Bible does not give us her name, but explains the condition as having an “issue” of blood, meaning she had been bleeding for a given amount of time.  Her resources were depleted after having seen every doctor available, and yet she was no better.

With all hope lost, she heard of a man who healed people and was determined to see him even though it was forbidden for those afflicted with a disease or blood ailment to be permitted in public.  She knew it was against the law, but took the chance that she would have an encounter with the Healer called Jesus.

We need to take a closer look at the whole situation.  From what we can tell, it is obvious that she had a desire to be healed, because she was willing to spend every “dollar” she had to receive help.  Another thing we notice is that the woman was persistent!  She did not give up seeking her healing, even after she received one bad report after another.

If we read the story only from Luke’s perspective, we do not know what she said, however, in Mark’s account of the gospels, we know exactly what she thought, said, and did.

“When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him (Jesus) in the crowd and touched His garment (the hem).  For she said, if only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” (Mark 5:27-28 NKJV)

This woman faced being punished or even put to death for breaking the law, yet she still followed her belief.  She believed so strongly that touching the hem of Jesus’ clothing would result in the healing she had pursued for twelve long and painful years.

Although we are never told the number of people gathered in that place, we do know that it was so crowded that they could not help but literally touch one another while moving through the street.

At some point in their journey Jesus noticed something different in the way He was “touched” while making His way through the crowd, so much so, that He felt the need to inquire if His disciples saw who specifically touched Him.

Thinking this was an absurd question to ask considering the circumstances, they shared their feelings.

“When Jesus asked who had touched Him, the disciples were dumb founded as to why He would even ask such a thing knowing the situation."  They replied, “You see the crowd pressing hard around You from all sides, and You ask, who touched Me?” (Mark 5:31 AMPC)

Why would Jesus ask such a question if He really was the Son of God? It was not the specific physical touch that got His attention but something else!

Whose Faith?

When the woman with the issue of blood touched Jesus from behind, He could not tell who it was, but felt anointing power from the Holy Spirit leave His body.  It was faith in believing who Jesus was, that touched the anointing of Jesus. The result for believing was favor (grace, mercy) for healing.

Maybe this will make it clearer … Her faith touched His heart because she totally believed in Jesus and trusted His word on healing to be true.  Her faith in the power of God caused anointing favor for healing.  It was her faith in Jesus, not His faith that manifested immediate healing.  Jesus, the Son of God, did not need faith; He knew He could heal.  He felt that she (her faith) knew it as well.

When she saw Jesus looking around questioning who touched Him, she fell to her knees before Him and confessed.  Jesus said to her, “Daughter (as a child of God’s), your faith has made you well.  Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”

When Jesus said “your faith has made you well,” He was referring to her faithfulness.  The original Greek meaning of the word includes confidence in being faithful.  She was persuaded to what was trustworthy.  He literally said, your faith saved you (made you well), Now go (depart) and live in peace being healed (soundly, healthy, and whole) without any sickness!

Don’t Stop Believing

It would be great if the story ended here, but it did not.  Do you remember the beginning of the lesson and where Jesus was headed in the first place?  He was on His way to Jairus’ house to lay hands on a dying girl when He was interrupted by another pressing matter.

You might think that Jesus would have pushed through the crowd and hurried to get to the girl, but that was not the case.  Can you imagine how Jairus must have felt?  He was leading the way when he saw Jesus talking to some lady!  Who knows if he was silently thinking, “Come on Jesus, my daughter is dying. This lady is alive and can get healed anytime, my girl needs you now!”

Well, it did not matter anymore.  Jesus might as well stay there according to those who just came from Jairus’ house. They interrupted Jesus while He was speaking and blurted out, “Your daughter is dead.  Why trouble the Teacher any further.”  How cruel was that?

I can picture the look of terror that came on Jairus’ face and how quickly Jesus wanted to squash fear from destroying what the ruler believed when he first asked Jesus to come to his house.  The Bible tells us that as soon as Jesus heard what the people said about the girl, He spoke hope into Jarius by telling him not to listen to what they said, but stick to your faith in believing on the power of God to heal.

“As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, do not be afraid; only believe!” (Mark 5:36)

By the time Jesus arrived at the house it was filled with people crying and making a loud commotion.  After He went inside, He asked them why they were crying when the girl was just sleeping.

When He made the statement that she was not dead but only asleep, they began to ridicule Him.  No worries ... Jesus made them all leave.  He took the parents of the twelve-year-old child and three of the disciples (Peter, James, and John) into the room where the girl was lying.

Taking her by the hand Jesus spoke, Talitha, cumi, which is translated, little girl, I say to you, arise.  Immediately she got up and walked.  Her parents were amazed and overcome with joy in what transpired.  Their remaining faithful to their belief in Jesus gave them the hoped for miracle.

The delay in Jesus coming, the people saying she was already dead so why ask anymore, a house full of wailing people and witnessing a lifeless body did not stop Jarius and his wife from believing.  No obstacle can prevent the hand of God from moving to where faith resides.  It never will.

Stay in Faith – Regardless to How Things Look

I have a sign in my hall directly outside my bedroom door that is a reminder of who God is and what He can do even when things are not going as planned.  This passage of scripture is a direct message from God to Jeremiah who had doubts of what God could do through him.

It states who He is, what He has done in creation and what He can do. It reassures me that I am a child of a mighty, all-powerful God who can do anything!

“Behold, I am the LORD (Yahweh, the God of Israel), the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?” (Jeremiah 32:27)

That declaration from the Lord is all we should ever need to keep us focused on the faithfulness of God, yet we often let surrounding circumstances lead us to believe otherwise.  I am so thankful that we are given examples of individuals who did not let circumstance(s) get in the way of their faith to believe in God’s favor for a miracle to happen.

When the enemy tries to tell you that things are impossible and there is no way the situation will work out, fight those lies with the Word of God!  Declare out loud that nothing is too hard for the Lord and that God is working things out for your good.  No matter how long it takes, do not stop believing that there will be favor in your journey if you remain in faith and keep believing that God is able to do more than you could ask or think.

“Now to Him who is able to do more exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV)

The words God spoke to Jeremiah, the woman with the issue of blood or all who believe in Jesus Christ are part of this “generation forever and ever.”   When the writer of this letter, Apostle Paul. spoke this to the Ephesians, he referred to the “power that works in us.”  This power is the favor of God through the Holy Spirit to do what God has ordained for His children.

Every solution (or miracle) will come to pass because God has already lined up all the details, people, places, or things needed for the solution to be manifested through the power of the Holy Spirit.  Stay in faith knowing good things are about to happen, because you remained faithful in believing God.

Keep these four things in mind as you faithfully trust God to answer your prayer requests:

1 - God already has a favor plan.
2 - God’s plan is prearranged and prepared for your good.
3 - God’s plan includes a future of success.
4 - God’s plan provides a place of peace in knowing,

While you wait on God, honor Him by doing everything you know to do with integrity and excellence.  Remember, He is waiting for your faith to touch His garment … His anointing favor.

There are times in our life when we do not understand what is taking God so long in answering our prayers, because we do not know the whole story.  Just like that young girl who needed a miracle, there were others whose needs were just as great.  The difference is only those who remained faithful in believing received favor from the Lord.

When we stay in faith God will open doors of favor that no one can shut.

“What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.  I know your deeds (I have seen your faith).  See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.  I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept My word (through believing) and have not denied my name.”  (Revelation 3:7-8 NIV)

Although prayer is the key to heaven, only your faith will open doors of favor!  Without faith God is not pleased nor does He reward unbelief.

“… without faith it is impossible to please Him (God), for he who comes to God must believe that He is (able) and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him,” (Hebrews 11:6)

Both the woman with the issue of blood and Jarius pleased God with their unwavering faith, even when things looked impossible.  They believed He is and was able to do all they asked and more!

An open door often comes after your faith is stretched through testing.  Jesus knew that Jarius' faith was being tested and spoke for him to remain faithful to what he believed when he originally asked Jesus to come heal his child.

Friend, may I ask, when was the last time your faith touched the hem of Jesus' garment?  Has it ever?  Did the door to the favor of God close because faith collided with fear and won?

God wants to strengthen your faith, not weaken it through tests and trials.  He wants you to believe that with God all things are possible, even the impossible!

I want to encourage you just as Jesus did to Jarius to keep believing and do not give into fear.  Jesus is watching your faith.  He is waiting for that believing touch of faith that will open doors for His favor!
