Walking through Holy Week Scriptures

Follow along with is through the events and teachings for Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday.

Walking through Holy Week Scriptures

Palm Sunday – The Triumphal Entry of Jesus

Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a borrowed donkey as the crowd welcomed Him saying “Hosanna” while placing their cloaks and palm branches on the ground before Him.

Monday – Jesus Cleans the Temple

Matthew 21:13-22; Mark 11:15-19; Luke 19:45-48; John 2:13-17

Jesus drove out those who bought and sold at the temple where He over tuned the tables.

Tuesday – Mount of Olives Discourse

Matthew 21: 23-24:52

Jesus taught in the temple using parables.

Wednesday – Preparing for the Passover Meal

The scriptures do not tell us what happened on Wednesday that week, but we do know others things were transpiring such as the preparing of the Passover (Seder) meal duties and the betrayal of the disciple Judas.

Matthew 24:14-15

Judas betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver; the price is discussed in the Old Testament about the 10 plagues on Egypt from the exit of the Israelites in Exodus chapters 7-12.

Thursday (Maundy Thursday) – The Last Supper, Gethsemane Prayer and the Betrayal Kiss

Matthew 26:17-75; Mark 14:12-72; Luke 22:7-62; John 13:1-38

Jesus washed the feet of the disciples and celebrated the Passover.  This is where He gave the meaning of the meal establishing the first communion and giving the new commandment.

Although Passover is not a commandment for Christians but began for the Old Testament Jewish nation, it is still observed among the Jews and many believers as a fulfillment of the prophecy of Christ Jesus.

Later that evening He went to the garden of Gethsemane where He was arrested by the Roman soldiers following the betrayal of Judas.

The term known as “Maundy” originates from the Latin work “mandatum” meaning commandment, referring to the new commandment in John 13:34 that Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper.  “Love one another as I have loved you, that you love one another."

Good Friday - Trail, Cruxifixion, Burial

Matthew 27:1-61; Mark 15:1-47; Luke 22:63-23:56; John 18:28-19:37

Jesus was crucified ona cross in Golgotha known as the Place of the Skull, which was located outside of Jerusalem, and then  laid  in a tomb.

Golgotha means place of the skull in Aramaic, and is Latin for calcaria.  It is translated in English as Calvary, the place where Jesus was crucified.

Saturday - The Tomb

Matthew 27:62-66; Mark 16:1; Luke 23:56; John 19:40

Jesus' body was in a tomb, but He also went to Hell and took the keys to death from satan.  He conquered death, hell and the grave. (Read Ephesians 4:8-9)

Jesus said, "I am He that lives, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore.  Amen, and have the keys of Hell and death." (Revelation 1:18)

Resurrection Sunday (Easter) - He is Risen!

Matthew 18:1-13; Mark 16:1-14; Luke 14:1-49; John 20:1-23

The rock at the entrance of the tomb where Jesus laid was rolled back.  An angel told the news of Christ's resurrection declaring He is not here but has risen from the dead just like He said would happen.
